Autoweek claims 997GT2 costs $281k US

Just received my 12/10/07 Autoweek. GT2 article claims cost will be $189,466 Euros or $281K US (base price). Can anybody verify these numbers ? I figured $190K US base.

Re: Autoweek claims 997GT2 costs $281k US

You cannot simply convert the price from Euro to USD using exchange rates. Porsche, like pretty much everyone else, sells cars in the US for significantly cheaper than in Europe according to exchange rates.

It will be around 190-200k USD when it comes out.

Re: Autoweek claims 997GT2 costs $281k US

I didn't convert the numbers, Autoweek did ! These are Autoweeks' EXACT NUMBERS - NOT MINE !!!

Re: Autoweek claims 997GT2 costs $281k US

Autoweeks is probably doing a $ for $ calculation. Given the softness of the US economy, and it's great importance to Porsche, I'm sure they'll be knocking the price down to something in the high 100's.

To be above this mark and crack the 200's would be suicidal for Porsche, especially in this market.

Re: Autoweek claims 997GT2 costs $281k US

    I say in the $170's

Re: Autoweek claims 997GT2 costs $281k US

Despite what Wall Street says, one dollar is still worth one euro on Main Street.
That might eventually change, though, but for the time being, enjoy cheap GT2s.

Re: Autoweek claims 997GT2 costs $281k US

I was really surprised to see this when reading my Autoweek last night. Not only do they mention it (the $281k price) in the article but they list it again in the spec. box. Of course the car isn't going to cost $281k, it will be about -191k so how does somthing like this make it to print? Isn't/Wouldn't there be a single person knowledgable enough to realize it's a mistake? It's not just a typo.

That's why I stopped my subscription to autoweek, the most amateurish car publication ever

Re: Autoweek claims 997GT2 costs $281k US

    complete rubbish.
i have configured my car with many many extras and i was confirmed a price of 208k from porsche. luckily we get US prices here or it would be 208k euro !!

Uhhhhh...I was in France about 3 weeks ago and if you think a dollar is a Euro on Main Street your crazed. My American Greenback was getting crushed and not going nearly as far as I would have liked or hoped.

Re: Autoweek claims 997GT2 costs $281k US

Congrats on the spec.'ing of your GT2. I'm a big fan of the car so far, hope to drive one soon. I think if you get that 2nd set of wheels your white GT2 w/ black wheels would look insane......... Did you spec. the parking helper? Anyway in the world I can talk you out of doing that especially on a GT2? Hey, congrats though 100%! Black interior?

I think what Groom meant was that a dollar will buy you in the USA what an Euro will buy you in Euroland, which also fits in with your experience in France, since the exchange rate is currently almost 1.50 $ to 1 Euro .

It worked for me on a recent trip to the USA, so it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good.

Re: Autoweek claims 997GT2 costs $281k US

Congratulations, intouch1, that's an amazing LOADED spec.
Only thing I would change is PCM wovered with leather instead of PCM painted black, but I assume you know what you're doing.

@Heist: Fritz got it right. We pay 50% more right now. A $ 100k Porsche sells for Euro 100k in Europe. A $ 500 PS3 sells for Euro 500, etc.
    At least we're not in the UK, where it's "Pounds 1 = $ 1 = Euro 1".

Re: Autoweek claims 997GT2 costs $281k US

They don't hand out journalist/media jobs to just anyone....

Car prices are perhaps least of Germany/Lond issues.....vs US, also have 2x housing costs; less dynamic economies to create new wealth to afford high-end new houses/cars; and less efficient car lease terms....and that awful EU weather where one needs girlie winter tires/wheels for 5mos/yr.....and suboptimal/archaic HVAC 12 mos/yr, even in high-end houses/offices/public spaces.....NYC is arguably US' closest version of Germany/Lond.....

Here are some girlie winter tires to illustrate the "european problem":
