    Aluminum in Porsche bodies future?

When will PAG make a an aluminum-bodied 911? or at least front/rear lids and doors? I suspect just the latter could shave 150-200 pounds.

Many mainstream cars are going the Al route these days, and not only Jag, but also japanese cars, such as the the M-series from Infiniti.

They already did. Except they called that particular 911 a "928".

(A few of the outer skin panels (front wings, doors) were aluminum, from what I remember. Don't think they saved 150 - 200 pounds tho').

Re: Aluminum in Porsche bodies future?

I have seen Porsche make the case, in their literature, for steel being the metal of choice because of it's superior strength. I read that several years ago in some Porsche brochure that was comparing a Porsche to some aluminum bodied sportscar. There may be an even better case to be made today with new multiphase steels and tailored blanks.

Porsche used an aluminum hood in the early nineties on the 964RS (the RSR used kevlar) and aluminum doors on the 993GT2 CS. It all comes down to cost.

Re: Aluminum in Porsche bodies future?

Porsche had been there & done that... and for many reasons, they decided that is not the way to go. I think carbon fibre is what they are after now and I certainly hope some of the technology from the CarreraGT would trickle down to the 998

Re: Aluminum in Porsche bodies future?

The use of ALuminum hood, rear deck, maybe roof, sounds like it would be a good balance of performance and cost savings.

Re: Aluminum in Porsche bodies future?

The 997s and 987s have aluminum lids front and rear.

Re: Aluminum in Porsche bodies future?

HA I guess Porsche agress with me

Re: Aluminum in Porsche bodies future?

sorry but carbonfibre wont be here for anothe 15 to 20 years, porsche (or ferrari for that matter) doesnt produce it in their factories but insted give the plans to a outside factory that is specialised for CF and let them make it. Withe carrera gt and enzo there was a big problem in supply becouse bouth cf bodies were produced in the same factoriy. ESL

Re: Aluminum in Porsche bodies future?

In two years BMW (they are the furthest along of the major manufacturers) will be able to produce complete CF body panels with Class A surfaces in large enough quantities for their regular models and not just the low-volume models. They can almost do it now but there are a few minor problems. A big problem everyone is going to have is sourcing carbon fiber in the quantities needed for 100,000 cars, a LOT more factories are going to need to come online.

Re: Aluminum in Porsche bodies future?

I use a little CF and i can not imagine why you would make a non-structural body panel part out of it especially for mass production. It does not take kindly to impacts and is VERY expensive. FG is better for that.
