    Short commute => short life?

My first Porsche (997S) is finally in the US and I should get it this/next week.

Will I prematurely age the car if I use it as a daily driver since my commute is only 10 minutes (streets, not freeway) to and from work? Or, does the beast like to have its legs stretched on a daily basis?
I'm trying to decide if I want to get rid of my other car... or if I should take the LONG and round about way to work!!

Re: Short commute => short life?

I figure the dumb machine doesn't care how long it runs AS LONG AS it reaches FULL operating temperture.

If it takes five miles for the water and oil to heat up to op temp you're next five miles to work can just as well be 500 miles.

The bad thing would be to beat the car BEFORE it reaches ful op temp. Or to shut it down and park it before it reaches full op temp.

    Did I guess right?

Re: Short commute => short life?

Take the long way in you and the car will appreciate 20 minutes each way

Re: Short commute => short life?

in the manual it also recommends long trips for running the engine it. it can't be good for it if it is switched on/off with multiple short trips

I don't have a manual yet (no car either!!) but is it one of those things where the German translation has lost some meaning or is it one of those instances where it's just vague how long is "long?"

Maybe it's just "long" enough for the engine water and oil to heat up?

I know with my M3 the water heats up in just a few miles but the oil temp doesn't reach full temp for about three or four times that. I figure with the M3 once the oil gets to operating temp the entire engine is ready to be driven, or in the spirit of this thread, shut off and parked.

Oh, remember the "old days" when a Porsche would carbon up and be ruined if it was only used for short trips or too much city driving? Maybe those old days conditions have created modern day myths about Porsche engines.

BINGO. I wouldn't sweat it if I were you. It's a machine, not an animal. Should be just fine. But it's always nice to have a second car as a beater. I use a truck as a second car, so whenever I need to haul a fridge or a grille, or whatever toy I buy next at Home Depot, I don't have to mooch a friend's truck. Sell your M3, buy a little truck, and you'll have everything you could ever need at your behest.

Re: Short commute => short life?

Thanks...sound advice. My commute is only 5 miles or so. Since the P-car is a keeper for me, I'll probably keep the old one as well - its a 2001 325ci, not an M3.

Re: Short commute => short life?

I was speed-reading through the thread, and thought MMD's M3 was yours. Yeah, for what you'll get for your 325ci on resale, you may as well just keep her. Have fun!

Nothing wrong with using it everyday to work even if it's side streets but AFTER break-in.

The manuel suggest you break-in the car with longer trips. This is for any vehicle imo. Whenever I get a new vehicle I always like to take a few hundred mile long trip the very day I pick up the car. Not only does it give you the best chance to get used to handling, braking etc. etc. it is best to break-in the tires, brakes and engine this way. It even says in the manuel that false oil level readings will occur if the vehicle is not driven on longer trips where it has a change to purge itself of contaniments etc.

You don't have to 'stretch it legs on a daily basis' but a few long trips especially during the 2000 mile break-in would be recommended. Besides it will be very difficult to take the short way to work once your baby arrives.

Congrats & please put in some pics when you take delivery.

Re: Short commute => short life?

The manuel is funny. In one part it says - 'Sitting still warming up the engine wastes gas. When you're ready for a trip start the motor and accelerate gradually.'

Agreed especially if you only drive a couple miles to work each day. After the stuff I've put into my C4S (stereo, and other goodies), my C4S literally costs 100 times more than my beater, which I drive about 30k+ miles per year

    LOL! Funny.

I forget what the 997 AC sez... .

Re: Short commute => short life?

hehehe... do what I do I live 0.9 Miles from my office and It takes a few minutes drive with stop lights...

I TAKE THE LOOOOONG ROUTE Across San Bruno Mountains and end up pumped before walking to my office... The trip is about 8-10 miles

Re: Short commute => short life?

tooner: I'll do that! I'll take the 280N-92E-101S loop and enjoy my ride to work. I love that drive. Damn the environment, Damn the gas prices!!

    WALK!!!

If your commute is 10 minutes long, get some exercise and use your legs. I have a 10 minute commute and quite frankly it's not even worth getting the bike out for. I walk every day and it takes about 30 minues. The car gets used only when I need to go someplace after work. Driving the 997 for 10 minutes seems like a waste of time - I would imagine it would be as disappointing as 10 minute sex sex with Heidi Klum...

    Re: WALK!!!

i am sure you will be running back to home(garage) after work then :P

    Re: WALK!!!

I wish I could walk! I live up in the hills - so the walk home would be painful! Also, I'm required to be at work on short notice - (ie minutes, not hours)... so it wouldn't be practical.
Driving a 997 for 10 minutes (or having sex with Heidi for 10 minutes) is a heck of a lot better than NOT doing it (just a guess, of course)!

Re: Short commute => short life?

    Too funny tooner!

BTW, I'd be happy just talking to Heidi for 10 minutes.
And people say I'm hard to please.

There's also a section on wheel care. Believe it or not it says to put vaseline on the rims.

I drive my 997 S cab to work 50 miles everyday. I took one of our suv's on 2 occasion's (since picking up the 997) because of expected flooding.

Well I don't care what Porsche recommends, I'm not getting vaseline anywhere near my rim!

    br d

Re: Short commute => short life?

"Vaseline" in that instance is yet another example of messy translation of German into English. They really mean some kind of wax; a fact I picked up in another board a while ago.

Re: Short commute => short life?

The beauty of this forum is that we can go from my commute to Heidi Klum and end up on vaseline in a matter of a few posts...
    very informative!
