    Protection for door entry

Any good suggestions how to protect the body part of the door entry from scratches from shoes?

    Re: Protection for door entry

    Pern,

Ask your local dealer for 3M Scotchgard (I am not sure if that's the name of the product in Sweden but that is what it's called here. It takes a couple of days to apply fully, but it is well worth the 600-800 dollar cost (USD). It is basically a clear coat that's applied to the front of the car, on the sides on the doorsills, rear bumper, side mirrors and headlamps (thicker on the headlamps) - pretty much anywhere that is scratch prone...

In case of a moderate scratch, the coating can be peeled off and then reapplied. The coating doesn't affect the luster of the vehicle, and it can be polished like any other kind of paint. It is highly recommended.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    AJ

    Re: Protection for door entry

I think ajcastaneda may be talking about protecting the exterior body of the car whereas pern is asking about the interior door threshholds.

I can't recommend any particular source, but I have read that there are parts called (in the US) "door sills" or "door entry guards" in stainless steel or carbon.

You have such a beautiful car, I'm sure you would want to ask your dealer about OEM Porsche parts.

Here is an example of what I mean:

    http://porsche.niello.com/cgi/tequipment/98655198100

If you search the Niello dealership site, you'll see two types of Porsche Tequipment door entry guards, one in carbon and one in stainless steel.

    Re: Protection for door entry

    just wondering...
do those stainless steel entry guard can prevent any kinds of scatches?

    Re: Protection for door entry

    Here are some images:

    Re: Protection for door entry

Looking at those images, I'm not sure whether the Niello site might list the "carbon" part number but show a picture of the "stainless" part. I just don't know. Anyway, from another site, below might be the Porsche Tequipment part numbers for Boxster door entry guards. But please re-confirm and don't rely on me. There may be new or different part numbers for the 987:

    * With Boxster logo in carbon fiber. Part no. 986 551 981 00
    * With Boxster logo in stainless steel. Part no. 986 551 981 01
    * With Boxster S logo in carbon fiber. Part no. 000 044 801 98
    * With Boxster S logo in stainless steel. Part no. 000 044 801 97

    Re: Protection for door entry

Well, those porsche pieces just replace the stock plastic pieces--they don't actually protect the door sills any more than the regular pieces do--they just look prettier and match the interior aluminum or carbon-fiber finishes. Of course, then there's the downside that you can't step on them or they'll scratch even easier than the stock plastic pieces, so what's the point?

    Re: Protection for door entry

This is not what I am looking for. I want to protect the body part outside the door sills where you easily can make sctraches when you (or a passenger) step in or out of the car. Looks like some sort of plastic film should be the way to go. Some photos or examples?

    Re: Protection for door entry

    Pern,

Read my entry about 3M Scotchgard. This is applied to the door sills as well.

    Regards

As my dear mother always told me " PICK UP YOUR FEET "

    Re: Protection for door entry

3M Body armour is perfect for that.
I have the rocker panels covered on both my Challenge Stradale and my 997 S Cab.

    Re: Protection for door entry

In what shape did you cut the film on your 997? Any pictures?

    Re: Protection for door entry

    STRA,

Where did you get yours applied? I know you're in the Metro Area so I was just wondering. What was your final cost to get it applied, and how often do you get it reapplied? Mine is going straight from the dealer in NYC to the shop that applies it...any recommendations?

    Regards

    Re: Protection for door entry

I drove my CS from the dealer directly to get it done. With my 997 I told the dealer not to touch the car, I wanted it with all the factory film left on. "DETAILING DYNAMICS" is without a doubt the best place in the Tri-State area to get the film done. They will deatil the car for you to so the dealer doesn't screw it up.

I've seen the 3M done by dealers and other installers and will tell you there can be a BIG difference in quality. With the 3M it's all about the quality of install.

    Here's their site:
    http://www.detailingdynamics.com/

Some pics (Under Ferrari that is my CS):
    http://www.detailingdynamics.com/film.html

Ask for Eddie or Matt. They just did the 3M on my moms CLK500 last week. They're PERFECTIONISTS, nutz just like me about getting it done 100%.

I haven't needed a re-apply on any of the cars they have done for me. It should last at least 5 years (there's a 5 year warranty) I don't have the prices on me but the most expensive piece (hardest to do) is the front bumper $525.00. Then it's only $50- $100 or so for behind the wheels, lights, hood, fenders, rocker panels etc.

Keep in mind this time of year they could be booked out a month plus. If you tell them a friend from RENNTEAM (mention my Stradale and 997 S Cab) that might help.

For 3M on my 997 there's some in this thread :
    http://www.rennteam.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=107304&page=&fpart=1&vc=1

For pics w/ 3M on my CS this thread:

If you mean what shape across the hood - It looks the best if it's not a straight line. It looks good when it's slightly U shaped. The strips behind the wheels for the front and rear fenders are 1-2 inch pieces. The fog and headlights are custom cut to fit. On the lights I cannot even tell where the 3M line is. You have to feel it with a finger nail to tell it's there. For the door entry the film goes along the rocker panel up inside the car to the door guard.

    Thanks a bunch!
