    Confused with order

    Hi guys

    I just wanted some opinion on ordering a Cayman S. I currently own an Audi TT QC. I'm quite happy with it. But I'm a very much fan of the 911. The 911 is above what I can afford. My dealer suggests that I go for a Cayman S. I'm not quite sure if this is the right decision. I'm worried about spending that much for a Cayman S and then get disappointed cause it wont be like the C2S I like. Especially that there are no Caymans for test drive until late Sept. 05, which by then I will miss the boat and would be lucky if I get an allocation for Feb/March 06 which is not the best time to buy a car where I live. It gets hot and it is not a good fun time . . . . your views please .

    Tricky one - perhaps a test drive of the Boxster S will give you an indication of the performance and handling characteristics you're likely to get - but it'll only be an indication. What will probably surprise you is the lack of turbo lag - befor driving the Boxster I thought the TT had no-lag, but a back to back comparison soon put me right...

    Either that or quickly get a job on a motoring mag...

    Sound advice.

    Having been a past Audi TT owner (very fine car BTW), I still can't help but think the Cayman will be so much better in all aspects.

    If you really are wanting a 997S, than that's what you should go for as the Cayman will not be a substitute for it unless you are strickly looking for mid-engine handling. The 997S is still top dog at this point.

    Hi there, I am also an ex-TT 225 Quattro owner and now have a Boxster S. I think you won't be dissapointed with the Cayman S judging by the performance of my Boxster S. However, the 911 feels very different to a Boxster, hence I am expecting that the Cayman S would be the same. The 911 definitely feels much more tail heavy and lighter on the nose. Here in Australia, we can order a car and put a clause on the contract that it is subject to test driving the car. I have bought a few new models like that, including the Golf GTI we are waiting for now. Can you see if you can do that too? Good luck.

    If you really want a 911 you risk setting yourself up for disappointment. The Cayman S is not a "poor" man's substitute 911 since it's neither inexpensive nor really comparable. I do not say that as a perjorative by any means. I believe that the Cayman fills its niche as a coupe companion to the Boxster, and will be quite successful in its own right as has been the Boxster. The Boxster is not generally held to be a substitute/competitor for a 911 cabrio, and personally I view the Cayman in a similar context with regard to the 911. I will not commit to an order until I drive the car. That's not born out of skepticism but rather, IMHO, prudence that should be exercised prior to any automobile purchase.

    I thought of a used 996 but after trying the 997S I was not encouraged to do so. I also never had a good experience with used cars.

    Thank you guys all for your advice . . . It has been a great help . . . I still have until Sat. before I place my order. I will think about it. For now I think I will go with WAY's advice. I will place my order on Sat and agree with the dealer that this order is subject to a test drive. I have Nov 05 delivery allocated for me . . . wish me luck. . . . Ohhh God, now even a harder task . . . picking the right color?

    The Audi TT is a nice car, but not nearly as dedicated, sharp, precise and fun as the Boxster is or the Cayman will be.
    The Cayman will feel very much like the Boxster but even sharper and more sporty. If this is true IMO there is nothing to neither fear nor doubt.

    The TT is a GT cruiser / sporty car, not a sportscar and the moment you try a Boxster you will know what I mean.
    I have been an Audi-freak for many years, and had a 330 BHP A4 Quattro. It was great fun, but nowhere near my 986.
    I like the TT too, but its front engine layout and less-than-perfect (it's good, but its not a Porsche) suspension makes it a very different car than the Boxster.
    The 911 again is a different car than the Boxster and Cayman...so try them both.

    My advice:
    Go for a 987s if you like wind in your hair.
    Go for a Cayman if you like a coupe sportscar.

    haha why so man audi tt owner make a move to porsche? i was one of them , 1 year with the 3.2 tt and got bord of it and dsg full of shxx!

    anyway before i was also thinking of cayman s but now i choose used 996 c4s .

    maybe next year go for 996 turbo after i get used to the c4s .

    Yes the dealer sent me an xl file with the options, not colors though.

    With the engine in the rear, the 911 just handles differently. I learned a new trick making U-turns... As you make the turn, you give the car just enough gas and wow... That rear end just pops around in a hurry.

    i was in the exact same boat 2 months ago. i decided to go for the 987s though. thats cuz 10hp extra & a hardtop was not appealing to at price it was being offered at.
