    OEL?

    Hey guys,

My dad owns an '96 911 which he drives, if its lucky, once a year. Therefor, it always has a dead battery and such. We are charging the battery right now since it is a beautiful day out and we were looking around the gauge cluster and what does OEL mean? When I was really young i thought it was Oil was spelled in German, well I was wrong. Is the OEL gauge the ammeter? Thanks guys. Just curious.

I am working on my dad to drive the car more...I would drive it but he doesn't trust me with it. It truely upsets me to let it sit there.

    Re: OEL?

You are right. OEL is another way to spell öl. öl means oil in german...

    Re: OEL?

Ya. But there is an "Oil" gauge on there as well.

    Re: OEL?

OEL could be the indicator for how much oil is left, where as the OIL gauges seem to show pressure and temperature.

    Re: OEL?

if i remember well from my 993, then at oil temp 90*C and oil pressure 1,5 bar approx., the oel indicator should show 3/4 (shows oil quantity inside of the engine). The whole procedure should be on a straight road with running engine at standstill, takes around a minute.
The whole thing is written in the manual...

    Re: OEL?

Ah, alrighty. Thanks. This was when we just started the car up so the engine was still cold. We had a scary thing happen to us today, the engine was sputtering at about 3,000 RPM. We later found out it was bad gasoline since the car has been sitting for quite some time. We added some gasoline stabilizer and some dry gas and it was running like a charm. Hopefully, because of this problem my dad will drive the car more often. But man oh man was it awesome to hear that baby purr after the hibernation.

hehe i see, so that's why you should tell your dad that "somebody" has to drive the car every now and then, for example you if your dad has no time to drive it...

    Re: OEL?

If he's not going to drive it often also tell him not to fill the tank. Put in only what you need for that day etc. And on the next start up get fresh gas (in a gas can) and pour it in. This system works real well for my Harley's.

That sounds like a good idea. I think we are going to use fuel stabalizer in the car more often. Fuel stabalizer doesn't harm the engine does it? I wouldn't imagine it would, but I am just checking. The car always sits every year but this is the first time we have had this problem with the gasoline going bad in the car.
