dartman, I really don't want to sound like a smart.ss or teacher but if you don't have a driver's license yet, GET RID of this car and buy something else.
Don't say that you haven't been warned, life can be so beautiful and there is no need to throw it away.
This is no "beginners" car. The most dangerous thing about the 996 Turbo is actually the fact that you usually underestimate the speed and acceleration.
It happens to highly experienced drivers, guess what happens to newbies?!
Also the 996 Turbo is a very forgiving and safe car...UNTIL you start to learn it's limits. And trust me, the PSM (Porsche ESP) works good but not good enough to beat physics. The AWD adds another degree of "felt safety" to this car, making it even more dangerous in unexperienced hands.
Get something else, honestly. Get a nice Cab, something nice but less powerful. Get a Mercedes, they have a pretty intrusive ESP system and numb steering feel, very good for beginners.
I'm sorry if my post offends you but I'm a real sports car nut and I have a son who is 21 months old and he is crazy about cars too, he doesn't play with other toys. But I don't care, when he is 18 and gets his driver's license, I would NEVER buy him a Porsche. NEVER...because I love him.
I know he will be very mad at me but I better have the chance to have arguments with him than not to be able to "fight" with him anymore for good.

Could use a little lowering...
I always get the impression that american TT's always have a higher stance, is that correct?
I only have that feeling with TT's...
Does is have something to do with the RoW suspension?

Good eyesight. All US version 996 models are 10mm higher than RoW, except for the GT3 and GT2

I think the early 2001 996TT's had the same ride height as ROW, but they stuck those ugly front bumper warts on to allow it to pass the US crash tests with its low height. Not sure how the GT/GT2/GT3 escaped that fate, but glad they did...

Per P website, 996TTS was listed at same height on specs page for Germany and US....perhaps X73 option is more commonly seen in Europe, leading to perception that Euro 996TTS are lower than US versions?

No, I'm not positive, but that is what I heard. 2001 was the first MY for USA. The cars in the later part of the 2001 MY could be ordered without the bumperettes, but those cars had to have a raised ride height instead (or so I heard). My father had a 2001 TT and was offered a choice of ordering with or without bumperettes. Shortly after, they all came without bumperettes...
