Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

I picked up my wife's Boxster S from the factory yesterday.
CR and Gregor joined me, we had a lot of fun and some interesting discussions.
Well, unfortunately we weren't able to take pictures because security was VERY tight (I wonder why... ). They also closed the street to the entrance of Werk 2 for general traffic and although we were permitted to park our car on the parking lot next to the gate, no chance for pictures, a few guys from security with their eyes on everybody.

BUT: pictures aren't really needed because we caught some interesting facts.

    Here we go:

    1. we saw a 997 Carrera 4S Cabriolet(!) and a 997 Carrera 4 Cabriolet(!), both without camouflage, only the 4S and the 4 were covered by black tape.
So yes, both models are coming soon, we already announced them here on Rennteam.com a while ago.

    2. we saw a 997 Carrera 4 Cab and a 997 Carrera Cab standing one next to each other (would have been a great picture but when I tried to grap my camera, a couple of Porsche employees who unloaded stuff from a truck were with their eyes on us because we "lost" our group )
The good thing: the 997 Carrera 4 looks great. The bad thing: at first glimpse, you don't see ANY difference between the Carrera 4 and the Carrera, just if you look carefully. And if they don't stay one next to each other, you don't see ANY difference. We were really wondering why Porsche did that and came to the conclusion that they actually needed the wider rear for the new 997 Turbo which seems to use the same body like the Carrera 4/4S.

    3. speaking of the 997 Turbo: all signs at the factory indicated an introduction for next year, we even think that production will start end of this year. When we visited production, some engineers were already setting up the new production gear for the 997 Turbo engine, the old engine isn't manufactured anymore but we saw a bunch of 996 Turbo "exchange engines", probably a batch for the parts department.
We also saw the front axle of the 997 Turbo, MASSIVE looking. But funny enough: it seems that the same part is used for the Carrera 4.
We also saw the cylindre head and the whole engine of the 997 Turbo next to engine dyno testing and I would say that judging by the look of it and the engine production changes we were able to witness, the 997 Turbo gets an engine based on the "old" 964/GT1 engine, not the M97 engine.
The 997 Turbo engine seems to have been updated substantially judging from it's looks, there seemed to be some sort of "housing" for the turbo chargers but we weren't able to take a closer look.

    4. we weren't able to see ANY sign of a 997 GT3, no engine parts, nothing.
    Strange.

    5. we saw a batch of 997 powerkit engines which had a sticker on them that they were not to be released to production before July 15th.

    6. we saw a 996 Turbo Cab which apparently actually was a camouflaged 997 Turbo. The brakes had black brake calipers, brake disc size was (just a guess) 350-360 mm in front and 330 mm in the rear. The car looked a bit strange, especially in the front but we weren't able to take a closer look with the security guards next to us.

    7. we saw a couple of Cayman S driving around without camouflage. We all agreed that it looks nice but somehow too Boxster-ish. Whoever wants to get a 911 look for less money, gets the wrong car. Porsche design succeeded very much in building a car which seems to have the 911 shape at first look but doesn't actually share any similarity with it. Clever design but we're not sure buyers who actually went for a "cheaper" 911 will like it. Otherwise, the Cayman looks really nice and has a surprisingly "clean" design/line flow.
We also agreed that lighter colours look better on the Cayman.

    8. we spotted a 3.6 l engine for the 987(!), no clue if it was for the Boxster and/or Cayman.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'm not sure I reported everything we saw.
I would also like to thank CR and Gregor for their company, we had a great time, unfortunately the weather wasn't too nice, it was raining all the time.

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

First congrats for your new baby!!

    second..Mmmh...

Christian..i have tons of questions..but all for the 997 GT3..

And you told that you have nothing to said about "her.."

Thanks instead for the great report..

My dealer tell me again this morning that for June/July 06 he will receive two 997 Gt3(one is mine ) and one or two 997 Turbo..and both cars will be MY2007

He said also that the restyling of the Cayenne is dealyed to March2007(MY2008)

    ciaoo

As soon as I get the chance to CLEAN it, it rained the whole day when I picked it up and it looks very dirty.
BTW: I really like the auto tranny on the Boxster S, very responsive.

Honestly...by accident. I visited the factory many times before and NEVER saw so much "Werkssicherheit" (Security) around the buildings and cars.
Of course I could have risked to take pictures but I didn't really want to provoke and/or create problems for our guide.

I plan some sort of "spying" action sometimes after the factory re-opens because I really want some interesting pictures. And I'll be prepared much much better.

No. We spotted a 3.6 l engine for the 987(!) but we don't know exactly if it was for the Cayman or Boxster.
But this is a pretty good indication that a more powerful engine is coming up for the Boxster and/or Cayman.

    Boxster S
    Black met./black interior
    Tiptronic (wife's car)
    PASM
    Sport Chrono
    Full leather
    Carbon base package
    Sport seats
    Heated seats
    Parking sensors
    Autom. A/C control
    Bi-Xenon
    PCM with BOSE and Phone
    Red seatbelts

We also ordered red stitching (steering wheel, whole interior) but the dealer or Porsche somehow mixed up the order and the only thing I got was the thicker steering wheel option (which should have come with red stitching too). The dealer and Porsche luckily found a solution to this problem: dealer orders new car with red stitching and I get the parts retrofitted when the new car arrives after the factory re-opens. My wife wasn't too happy but I think the dealer and Porsche did a good problem solving job.

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

Did you see my car sitting there???!! It's the Silver 997S with a black interior. Oh! The Carrera Classic wheels make it easier to spot.

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

RC - so which P Cars do you actually have then? A 997s, a CTT and a Boxster s? I presume that's you in the CGT avatar too right? Nice collection!

Also, where can I find your review on the Sports Chrono? I just ordered a c4s WITHOUT S/C but have about 2 weeks to change my order.....

    Thanks !

cool, i hope the 987s is enjoyed.. i wonder if your wife will let you drive it

RC - Did you see the physical engine or just a 3.6L sign on a box or something? I ask because I am curious if you could tell if it might be a dry sump 3.6L like the GT3

If not, did it look just like the 997 3.6L or maybe like the 996 3.6L with X51 (metal intake)?

Might I ask how you figured that the 3.6l engine was for a Boxster?

That would be quite a move - if Porsche wants to keep charging more for the Cayman, than it will also have to get at least a 3.6l engine (presumably tuned for more power). I would imagine that the 911 would probably go to the 3.8l engine entirely.

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

Great to hear some positive words about tiptronic for a change. Hit that sport button and enjoy...

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

Thanks for the "heads up" on all that stuff.

The engine looked like the typical M96 engine, sorry to disappoint you. And yes, it had a sign saying "3.6 l engine (987)". But it was well hidden away from the usual "tourist route". The 997 Turbo signs were also turned away from our route but we looked very carefully and spotted them, including the parts. Only the 997 Turbo engine itself had no sign, the upper part was covered by a blue plastic cover but just a little bit, so we were able to see the whole thing, incl. the turbo chargers which were partially embedded in some sort of housing.

There were rumors of a 987 with 320 HP in the past, maybe it will be some sort of Cayman and/or Boxster RS. I don't have a clue. Or maybe the Boxster gets the 3.6 l and the Cayman a turbo charged version of the 3.4.

Thanks. Read the 997 Carrera S review, it includes a sport chrono review too. May I suggest something: the only downside of the sport chrono package is the ugly stop watch. Otherwise...if you don't like how sport chrono works, just don't use it. Better have it because there is no chance to actually retrofit it.

Good question, we weren't able to check the color code.
I'd say silver, some sort of champagne color with a light gold touch, black and a dark metallic blue. The dark colors really don't show the line flow of this car and in my opinion, this is very important to make the Cayman look special.

whoa, whoaaaaaa... RC you actually HAVE a CGT? what!?! i didnt know that i guess i just thought that was just you sitting in one or something... so you actually have a CGT

    wow i had no idea

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

    Andrew, cool down.
I drove in a Carrera GT on the track as a passenger with Jochen Albig (a well known german race car driver and Porsche test pilot), I was allowed to drive a CGT on a parking lot once to be able to tell how good or bad the clutch worked and I even sat in the "Number One" (my Avatar) in Weissach and talked to Mr. Hölscher who was standing next to it. But NO, I do not own a Carrera GT and to be honest, I'm not sure if I would want one. Especially since Ben's horrible accident, I realized that the CGT is a challenge, even in experienced hands. Since I don't do professional racing anymore, I don't have the training to drive such a car at the limit. To make it short: I would probably kill myself in the CGT, I'm the type of guy who has to try the limit. With the lack of PSM (ESP) and a very unforgiving handling with ASR turned off, I would need to concentrate 100% all the time with no margin for an error. This may work on the track and driving alone but otherwise... I wasn't able to move my tuned 543 HP 996 Turbo at the limit, so guess what the ride in a much lighter and more powerful CGT would be alike. This is one reason why I like my 997 Carrera S: I can play with this car like a toy, it is no real challenge for me, even at the limit. Maybe I'm just getting old and chickening out...two kids make a difference.

So you didn't take the "tourist route"?

Do you know if the Cayman and 996 Mk.1 engine are more or less the same - apart from the more complex camshaft system?

And don't worry, you are not getting old - I'd say your rational part of the brain is just trying to finally take over...

    Well, not always...
The funny part was that there was a group from the US and one guy took FLASH pictures all the time and nobody really cared. But this group was from PCNA I think, they all spoke US English and had a "Club" sticker on their shirts.

Regarding the Cayman engine: I don't know. I may be able to get a detailled engine description after the factory re-opens but I wonder if Porsche will ever give away similarities. Of course it makes sense to use the "old" M96 996 MkI engine for the Cayman but even if they used it in it's base design, I'm pretty sure they improved and modified it to cope with new emissions laws, etc.
Regarding my "brain" taking control: my wife thinks something different.

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

lol guys, slow down! RC's keyboard is probably melting from answering all these questions so quickly

seeing we're on a roll, let me add to the snowball

any other noticable changes on the C4S, did they even do ANYTHING to the front of the car different to the C2S?

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

Thank you RC for the Cayman information. Your posts from the factory provide quite a vicarious thrill! Perhaps your sighting of the 3.6L 987 engine suggests that the Cayman RS is more than rumor??

Maybe she just wants to join us? Get her an own User ID...

I am pretty sure that both engines share a lot of similiarities, especially since the first 996 engines were said to produce slightly less than 300 hp.
So engine size (bore & stroke), engine block and peripheral systems should be similiar. MAybe the intake system and probably the engine management received an upgrade!

Re: Coming back from the FACTORY with some interesting news

Thank you for the report RC!

Which looked better the 997 4S Cab or the 997S Cab?
