    Brake pads warning message...

    Yesterday I was braking when a red warning message appeared briefly on my dash.  It said - "Service" and something about brake pad replacement required.  When I pulled over to read it properly it disappeared?

    So I phoned my OPC today and asked for their advice. I bought my 997.2 GTS new from them in 2011 and my current mileage is just under 35,000.  They said I will require brake pads replacement front and rear and that they can't do this without also replacing the discs at the same time.  The total cost for this they estimate at around £1,800.

    Must say this sounds a bit steep!  Does this sound reasonable to those of you more mechanically minded than myself?

    Your opinions would be gratefully received - many thanks...

    That's a tough cookie. Your car is 7 years old so it would not be a strange thing to replace the discs, never mind the pads which I have to replace 3 to 4 times a year due to my DE driving. However, the service light to appear and disappear is odd as the sensors for the brake pads wear get on and  stay on ! I reckon that they had explained to you why they need to do this that way? Again, changing brake pads usually does not require changing the discs. Still, after 7 years the discs could also be simply gone (ordinary wear), ie., moisture/rust whatever...hope this helps a bit...

    Yes, after 7 years this does not sound strange. I guess it comes down to driving style and environmental factors. The price is not outrages for new pads and discs all-around. Just bite the bullet and replace it all. The brakes are quite important after all indecision

    If the discs have developed a lip from wear its best if you change them as well, otherwise your new pads are not going to last long, and you wont be saving in the long run.

    But if the brakes are not worn or warped I dont see why you need to replace them, depends on the milage not so much the age of the car, but milage can be deceiving since mostly city/town milage will wear our discs much quicker than mostly highway milage.

    If you cant tell if they are worn or not you are just going to have to trust your mechanic, the quoted price doesnt seem expensive though and in general 7 years is not uncomom to have to replace the discs.

    Seems a bit strange they would tell you you need new discs based on a phone call. Normally discs are replaced based on minimum thickness - unless they are warped or scored or something. Assuming discs are within tolerances and basically sound, you can just replace pads on their own, too. Also questionable is the logic that you’d need to replace front and rear at the same time.

    I would get a second opinion - sounds to me like you do need pads for either front or rear, but anything more should depend on inspection.

    Maybe the mechanic knows the car from previous services? Mine does.

    I had my brakes and discs (997.2) replaced last year, nothing unusual about it. + Your quote doesn’t look that steep for discs and pads. yes

    Quote is not expensive for disks and pads .

    After 35k miles, I would not be surprised at all to have to change the disks . If they are unevenly worn , which you can easily see by looking at them, or going over them with your finger , it is best to change them otherwise your new pads will wear off quickly . 

    Take the opportunity to put some paggid pads, if you want better bite and don't mind a bit of brake noise

    I am sure a large part of the £1.800 must the high labour charge by the OPC.

    Ask for a quotation by an Independent Porsche Specialist in order to compare. But stick to original discs not imitations.

    35,000 is a good mileage for a 911 with automatic transmission.

    Porsche consider anything above 1mm disc wear on each side as enough for disc replacement.

    Good advice in the posts above.  I'd just add that they should change the brake fluid while doing this as well (every 2 years at minimum with street driving only).

    My last brake job in the Cayenne TTS was $4,500. In the past 15 years, all brands, no one ever replaced the pads without changing the disk...

    I would not change the one without the other. Minimal cost overhead anyway.

    I did check out various alternatives including a quote from an Indy.  They looked at the brakes and confirmed that, due to some corrosion on the discs, it would be best to renew pads and discs all round.  Their price was about £200 lower than the OPC.

    Having thought it all through, I decided to go ahead with having it done at the OPC yesterday.

    I'm quite glad that I did as they found a problem with a bolt thread which had sheared and resolved that at no extra expense.

    I got the car back today with them having completed the initial 'bedding in' process.  The brakes seem okay but certainly not as sharp as I was expecting!  Maybe I will need to run them in for a while longer?  Not having kept my previous cars long enough to have first hand knowledge of what this entails, I'd be glad to hear any pointers from members who have done this?

    "k" is often used to mean 1000 from the greek word kilo, like used when talking about money for example, $100k means 100,000$. So 100k in the context of distance can mean 100,000 kilometers instead of 100kilometers which would be 100km. Could be interpreted both ways.
