    Question Regarding PSM

If you turn your PSM switch "off," is the light on the switch suppose to be on or off. Now if you turn the PSM switch off and you do something that makes the PSM automatically go on, what does the light do?

    Re: Question Regarding PSM

My understanding is that if you truned PSM off it will not go on (automatically) even if it should be

    Re: Question Regarding PSM

Under braking, PSM will go on if needed, even if it's set to 'off'. However, I don't know whether this will be visible on the switch. Probably not, but that's just a worthless guess...

EDIT: the PSM switch will probably stay on, but doesn't the PSM light (under the tacho) blink when PSM intervenes?

Pierre is right, when the PSM is off and you hit the brake pedal, it turns on again...to go off again as soon as the brake pedal is released. This is actually the setup on the 996 Turbo, on the 996 is seems different (hit the pedal and the PSM stays on again).
But I think cjv's question was different: on my Turbo, the PSM off button light stayed on, even if I pressed the brake pedal with PSM off. The little round orange light in the speedo cluster came on during extreme driving situations, even with PSM turned off. With PSM on of course, the PSM button light stayed off all the time. Now I get a headache...

I've driven 996tt, 996, boxster and cayenne. All I can say is that PSM is different regarding how it interferes e.g. very late and quite brutal (e.g. 996tt) and smoth (e.g. cayenne). But core function is always the same. This means PSM is always active. If you turn it off you just switch the 'output' off. As soon as you hit the brakes the output is switched on again but just as long as the brake pedal is pressed. After releasing the brake pedal the 'output' of the PSM is off again.
btw: As far as I remember the PSM light didn't flicker during any interference if PSM was switched off.

    Cheers
    Thomas

This is valid only for facelifted 996. Cars before the facelift had a different setup, PSM went on and stood on again after the brake pedal was pressed. It changed with the introduction of the 996 Turbo, I just looked it up to be sure.

    Re: Question Regarding PSM

did a grass gymkhana this weekend (pics on http://hobbystage.net/porsche/smd_nz/) so had a lot of fun playing with the psm. For my car (2002 996 C4S) it does:

psm on: no rocker or dash light, and the dash hazard/warning light (yellow triangle) flashes as it comes on.

psm off: rocker lght on, and 'psm off' dash light is on. if you brake, the dash 'psm off' light turns off - as the psm intervenes.

for the cayenne 'psm' ... it didn't have the chance to cut much power becasue it was really hard to get the cayenne's rear to power slide.

You should have turned it off, it changes the whole characteristics of the Cayenne, including throttle/shifting response. It is a difference like transforming a sheep into a wolf. And yes, you can powerslide the Cayenne but I actually wonder why? I have only 1000 km on my Cayenne Turbo and due to extreme driving on the street(!), the rear tires already look pretty bad (rough surface with even some small "melted" regions on the tire).

You sure had a lot of fun, thanks for the pics.

my 03boxster S is a manual, but i was wondering if turning PSM on it off would alter the throttle response as in the cayenne?

    Re: Question Regarding PSM

The reason for my question is, I was thinking of having designed a logic switch. When the PSM was turned off, this switch would sense if the car wanted to turn it on again. When sensed, it would turn it off again in milliseconds.

What if anything would be gained?

No, the change is only on the Cayenne, not on the Boxster or 996. I still have to find out why Porsche did that on the Cayenne, right now nobody can give me a satisfactory answer. Maybe nobody has a clue...
