    how's your gas milage???

    hello all,
    as some of you know I've just picked up my 997S a week ago and am still trying to get acquainted with it. I was wondering what's the gas milage you guys are getting under normal driving. mine is rather crappy, it fluctuates in the range of 16-17mpg on the freeway. is there something wrong with my car?? thanks in advance fellas.

    On the highway I have seen 28-29 mpg. Generally when i fill up I average 19-20mpg. Which is a mix of aggressive and normal driving on highways, country and in towns. Done 4k miles since Jan and I fill up on average every 230-240miles.

    I didn't notice any difference in the mpg between break in and now. But I didn't really watch the mpg too carefully. Just in-frequency monitoring via the computer. But I always fill up at 230-240 miles will a few gallon to spare. I did get 290~ miles once on a trip back from boston which was steady driving util I hit traffic on the i95 (which is worst than the LIE which is hard to believe) and then bumper to bumper.

    Your gas milaege will get better after 1000-2000 miles. It ALL depends on how aggressive you drive. Some highway trips I will only average 15 mpg or so. Today I was just cruizing in 6th gear 65-85 mph for 100 miles and I averaged 24mpg. I could get 27 or maybe even a little higher if I wanted to by dropping the speed a bit. If you keep it in 5th your milaege will be lower but you also don't want to keep it in 6th and lug the engine at all. I found 6th is okay once above 60 or so. Depends on the terrain.

    One other thing. If you're not using your AC, that helps. Turn OFF the compressor by pushing the "ECO" button on your dash.

    I'm getting around 30 mpg while doing a typical 80 - 90 mph on interstates. Around town I get 17 - 18 mpg. My car has 1900 miles on it so far.

    Average 22.4 since new (12,000 miles) and 23.4 over the last 6,000, so it does seem to be better when broken in, mix of routes but similar over the 12,000 miles to the 6,000.
    I would think 16-17 around town is about right but it should not be 16-17 on a freeway unless you are really pushing hard.
    Am I right in thinking the US Gallon is a little smaller than the Imperial gallon (and I had heard everything was bigger in Texas) so that may mean you have to knock 10% or so off my mileage!

    Measured it very carefully on a 400 km trip 2 days ago in my 996 Targa driving 110-150 km/hr in 6 th gear (avg 120 km/hr): 9.4L/100 km. That's 30 mpg if I've done my math right.

    I definitely noticed a difference in gas and oil consumption (less) as well as performance (more!) after about 5,000 km.

    26-28 Freeway

    After the break In i really only looked once... after that to heck with the gas! I'm just drivin'

    30 mpg at 80-90 mph ? That's damn good. I forgot to say above that my 24 mpg is with the top down but I still don't think I could get 30mpg at 80-90mph.
    If I really try to stay off the gas I can get maybe 27/28 (wonder if that would go up a lot with the top up ?)Mostly I find myself getting 15 mpg and less.
