My initial comment just served to counter the haters on EVs
Hey, I positively love EVs, when done right. Look at my sig to see I'm no EV hater.
Solar powered EVs, when done right, means lots of PV cells on your house and garage roof, not your vehicle roof.
Watts per square meter over time. Watts per square meter is determined by sunshine and PV conversion efficiency -- approaches an asymptotic limit based on geography, weather, and perfect photo-to-electron conversion. Long time is your friend as it allows storage of small energy rates into a bigger whole. Unless one is prepared to keep the car always outside (no garage), car-mounted PV cells just don't excite me as even a small boost to a motive power source. Power for ventilation fans? Sure. Power to go? Hard to figure how.

As you have pointed out there are numerous factors to consider that limit the application of solar energy for uses in transportation. Even EVs, as you are well acquainted with in your impressive fleet, have efficiencies approaching that of fossil fueled vehicles on a well-to-wheel basis if fossil fuel is used generate the electricity consumed by the EV. Until an energy source is used, i.e., nuclear, the variability of production using wind and solar, means that backup generation sources, typically using fossil fuels, are needed for grid stability.
Too bad there are fewer and fewer individuals that understand these important issues.
