I suspect it's just another one of the bugs currently affecting the site, in which case we'll have to wait for Eunice to get back from his trip and has time to look at it.

Carlos, that's a fantastic review, so thorough and comprehensive.

I had a 991S on test for a couple of hours today and can't add much to what you've already said.  The only difference was that the car I drove had PSE.  Its crazy, with the symposer, its a lot more aggressive than my 997.2 GT3!

    Re: ROAD-TEST: New 991 CarreraS

Thanx Carlos for a fantastic review Smiley I like new 991 a lot and I will try one next year..

    Re: ROAD-TEST: New 991 CarreraS

After seeing the white one in person last week, I changed my order again yesterday.  It is the 3rd time I change my color combination and options.  My production schedile would be delay to the end of Feb. according to my dealer and no more change can make.  Actually, I saw 3 color last week, one is Platinum silver, one is basalt black, and the other one is white.  Platinum silver and basalt black are good, but the white one is not just good it is "WOW".  I agree with Carlos, the white is a winner.

    Re: ROAD-TEST: New 991 CarreraS

    Thanks Guys! drunk.gif

Pratas, I agree, unitl now I would of never even considered white for a 911 (except for a GT3) but if I had to spec a 991 right now, I'd choose white hands down Smiley

    white all the way !

    Re: ROAD-TEST: New 991 CarreraS

Not sure if it's because it's a 991. Ni would never go for white, but I got a white 997 GTS - I think it's just the fashion - white is the new black... Think about it: why would a 991 look good in white whilst a 997 wouldn't..?

    Re: ROAD-TEST: New 991 CarreraS

For me a Porsche sportscar must be silver,  with black a close second (provided that the climate is black-paint-friendly). White also looks good on the 997.2 and 991, whereas it was terrible on the 996 and only slightly better on the 997.1.

    Re: ROAD-TEST: New 991 CarreraS

Had a 2008 Carrera S in white with black rims.  I loved it, and honestly have never had more compliments from neighbors and admirers.  A very clean, pure look.  Not at all  a threatening or aggressive or look at me color...

Any red interior accents? maybe red seat belts  and red Sport Chrono dial?  Smiley

    Re: ROAD-TEST: New 991 CarreraS

I like the red accents.  Actually, I have a 2012 white SLK with black interior come with red seat belt.  However, it come together with red stitching and red ambient lighting.  It is a grest match.

With all the silver aluminum trim pieces in the new 991 plus I add 3-spoke steering wheel and the adaptive sports seat plus, I pick the silver-grey belt this time.  I think it would look classy.

    Re: ROAD-TEST: New 991 CarreraS

Great review Carlos - thank you.

I drove a C2S last week and largely agree with what you said.

The car I drove was deeply impressive and moves the whole game on.  The sports exhaust sounded marvellous. The steering really suits the car and isn't an issue and although I miss level of feedback from the older cars, it is different not worse. Actually with all the chassis options its the best steering 911 I have ever driven. The engine feels very strong and much stronger than an extra 50bhp would suggest.

I do wonder what a C2S without all the chassis options ticked would feel like? The car I drove was about €132,000 which seems a lot for C2S and although it looked and felt great I do wonder what it will be worth in 2 years when there are few about and the next turbo and GT3 are here?

Overall it is a marvellous car but although I think its is a superior and more efficient 911 I'm not sure its a more enjoyable 911 to drive on the road. Especially at close to twice the price of a nearly new 997 C2S. The thing is even at the price you need to pay I don't see another car close to it in all round performance, comfort and competence.

I'd be most interested to read a review about a 991 without the chassis options and manual gearbox.

    Re: ROAD-TEST: New 991 CarreraS

I drove a 991 launch car yesterday afternoon. Key car specs:

      Carrera S
      PDK
      Sport Chrono
      Sport PASM
      Assisted Steering

I drove that car on quiet streets in an industrial area where it was possible to appreciate the car handling, shifting, acceleration, and braking. I know the path well, having driven it before, including my own car, thus I think it was enough to form my opinion.

The chassis glides over road surfaces. It is cushier than a 997.2. In PASM Normal mode the active control comes across as a refined sky-hook-type design, which levels the platform and filters high frequencies.

The wider front track makes the car corner far flatter. The car is very stable. It totally lacks the harmonic oscillation of a 997/997.2. Turn the steering fast and it just turns, around a center point near the center of the car. The sig nervousness of a 911 is gone. It reminds me of a Boxster Spyder (with more power).

The steering is far more isolated than the 997.2 hydraulic. It is precise and points the car in the correct direction, but road surface feedback is filtered. This particular 'assisted' version is quite bad as it dramatically changes character (lightens up) when the car slows down.

The PDK/engine integration is more refined as they sharpened up the SC Normal shifts, apparently shortening the open clutch, close clutch cycle in the economy mode. SC Sport or Sport Plus I see no difference, they just sound better via the cabin symposer (more below).

The interior is fancier, Panamera-like. The windshield is very deep and plunges towards the front. I'm sure many like the perceived luxury, others prefer a more spartan look.

The 'symposer', as a first impression, sounds good, but as any acoustic channelization. This symposer controls the auditory experience in this car. One does not hear the mechanic bits any longer - the car is far more sound insulated, so the symposer takes over and it renders an immediacy to performance sounds that helps with the presentation. I am not sure though if the novelty wears out with time.

Up until today I always thought my 997.2S was a distant cousin of say a '72 S. After today I think it is far closer than I thought. The key differentials are interior/chassis dynamics.

If all-out performance is the goal, a 997 owner will soon migrate to a 991. However, if one likes a 911 which resembles more the original, with its signature 'defects',one should keep the 997 as long as it is possible. Or perhaps own both.

It is a very good sports car. Fast, responsive, agile, but more distant, more isolated. As PAG correctly phrases it - more calm.

There are a myriad of other details (Sport Chrono operation, iPod USB port and other items) but those are just details.

This is, of course, one P-car fan's opinion. YMMV.

    Re: ROAD-TEST: New 991 CarreraS

@ A.Dias: Your impressions are given in a very concise but very meaningful way. The 997 to 991 transition comes across very clearly. Thanks!

At say, 7/10 the maximum that most owners drive their cars to, the new 911 will be friendly and comfortable and very fast effortlessly. However, as you go towards 10/10 the typical 911 behaviour will appear. The 997 raised this threshold to perhaps 5/10 from the air-cooled 3/10.

The Power Steering Plus that you refer to above is a comfort option. I was reading the 991 presentation in Santa Barbara CA and even the factory representative said that this option is not for the sporty driver.

That factory  representative is then a true moron. Why? All press 991S in Germany  are equiped with -20mm PASM/PDCC option are also equiped with Steering Plus option. The "911 product line Director" Herr August Achleitner is quoted to have said  that the enthusiast driver will be happier with just the PS version and that the PS Plus gives a little more comfort. yes

A weakness of such systems (like the Audi and Mercedes Parameter Steering) is (generally speaking as I haven't tried the 991's) evident when you corner at low speed like on a hairpin or a slow bend. In such cases the steering can be lighter than what you would have liked. Anyway, if the standard PS is like the 997's I don't think anyone would want more assistance at lower speeds.

Anyway, the PS Plus is clearly a comfort option according to the Porsche literature:

    Power steering Plus

Power steering Plus, the comfort-enhancing power-steering system, is available as an option for the 911 Carrera models. At high speeds, the steering is as firm as you would expect and responds with extreme precision while steering comfort remains as high. At low speeds, the steering ratio of Power steering Plus adjusts for much easier manoeuvring and parking.
