    997s or 996 turbo....

Hey guys, just took a look at 996 turbo and 997S ( gonna test drive saturday) and I really didnt like 996 turbo interrior, im a big guy 240 punds and it didnt feel comfortable at all, but 997s did! I really liked the car, but i was planning on getting Turbo and tuning it, but now I dont know what to do....997s is so much nicer! Damn it, but i want more power lol, i just sold my E55 and i really loved the torque of that thing... what to do?

    Re: 997s or 996 turbo....

Get a 997 S now, but order a 997 TT for next year.

    Re: 997s or 996 turbo....

    Nah waaaaaaay too much money

    Re: 997s or 996 turbo....

You might want to try a 997 S with powerkit (option code X51). With 381 HP, it's just a bit less powerful than a 996 TT (420 HP). Since it's 170 kg lighter, they are about as fast. The powerkit greatly improves the torque curve as well.

However, if you're serious about tuning your car, you WILL need a Turbo. You won't get much farther than the factory powerkit on a N/A car.
So, I'd go for a pre-owned 997 (rather than new) as a stopgap (so as to reduce the depreciation) and turn it in once your 997 TT has arrived.
Meanwhile, your stock 997/S might feel a bit weak compared to an E55, but it's so much more fun to drive...

Another thing you need to take into account is delivery times. You won't be able to find an X51 997 S right on a dealer's lot. If you're going to wait 4 months for an X51 997 S, you might as well wait 1 year for a 997 TT, especially since you'd get the 997 S right at the beginning of the dreadful Canadian winter.

    Re: 997s or 996 turbo....

    Vladmin,

I would be very careful if I were you. The 997 will most likely feel powerless according to your standards (previous E55 owner). You're coming from a vehicle with immense amounts of torque at lower RPMs. The Carrera will feel a lot more agile but not nearly as powerful. The turbo, however, is a different story. You might not feel a difference at all. Keep in mind that different people have different reactions to the power output. In addition, I didn't mind the interior of the 996 when I had it; however, I now have problems with it as I've been driving the 997 for some time. It seems outdated...

You might fall in love with the 997 when you drive it, however. In my opinion the 997S is a vehicle which is yet to be matched in terms of agility, power, and finesse. You should also keep in mind that the power kit should be available to NA customers soon!

    Re: 997s or 996 turbo....

I dont want 997 turbo it's way too much money...I'd rather buy new z06 and later used carrera lol

    Re: 997s or 996 turbo....

to be honest i'm considering few other cars, for the price of new 997s i can bring 03/04 GT3 from US, and im also waiting to see reviews of new Z06 with its massive 7 liters engine, so im gonna wait and see.

I think you are not the typical Porsche driver. I think you like torque more then high rpms. You will not be happy with a 997 S nor with a 996 GT3. Either take a 996 tt or get the new Z06.

I like the exteriour of the 996 tt. I don't like the interiour. Even sometimes I more like the 996 tt front then the front of a 997. That's the reason why I ordered a 997 4S with X51 and didn't bought a 996 tt.

Quick question, can current 997s owners install the X51 kit? Do you really think its goin to match the 996tt performance?

I don't believe Porsche have announced a retrofit X51 kit yet - but they're all about profit so I guess it will come soon!

As to it matching 996TT performance, I guess some of the Rennteam experts can answer that, pls?

    Re: 997s or 996 turbo....

I expect a X51/P17 997 S to be faster than a 996 GT3, which was already faster than a 996 TT (the lower weight making up for the inferior power)

IIRC, the stock 997 S was about as fast as a Mk1 996 GT3 or a 996 TT on Hockenheim Kleiner Kurs, so imagine with the sport chassis and 26 more HP...

A 997s with powerkit should do 0-200 kph in about 15.5 secs. A standard TT does this in 14.6 secs, the X50/turboS in 13.1 secs.

The 997s did the NS in 8.05. An old sportauto test (2000) of the 996TT (420hp) stated 7.56 for that car.

In addition to the above numbers: you are looking for torque (not so much maximum hp ). The TT should match that expectation better.

I would suggest to go for a TT

If by "fast" you mean top speed (and not acceleration), then aerodynamics are the decisive limiting factor in the above comparison, not weight.

Weight changes affect acceleration, not top speed.

    Re: 997s or 996 turbo....

I don't know what the speed limits are in Canada, but I doubt they're high enough! That's why I was thinking more about acceleration than top speed. (oh and yes, I admit I mentioned the Hockenheim Kleiner Kurs lap times rather than the Nürburgring Nordschleife ones because it give more weight to a great chassis and less to HP, which kinda was my point )

Come to think of it, I just remembered the P17 sport chassis wasn't available there.

That said, if he is used to an E55, I'll second mumbasic's advice to get a Z06. It's no Porsche but its raw power is awesome for the price.

I don't give a penny to be first in my city. But in this case it seems to be so. I'm the first who ordered X51 and the first who ordered a C4S.

I took the C4S, because of its 44 mmm wider body the AWD is just not so bad. I live in higher region of Schwarzwald where we have a lot of snow.

Until today I haven't completed my colour decision. Black or Silver. Interiour all black leather with some extra leather applications, adaptive sports seats and the usual options.
