    Sport Auto Test Rating 997 Turbo No. 1 ??

    Does anyone have the rest of this article and could someone translate please? Hope this is not old news. I don't "speak" German but test appears to involve Horst von Saurma and a point system that, unless Germany has some sort of reverse numeric system , seems to rate the Turbo above the Ford GT, F430, and Z06?

    I thought Horst von Saurma have some terrible lap time with the 997 Turbo at Nurburgring?

    They don't just go with NBR times for the scoring system. However, he gives the Z06 great marks and is impressed with the car, especially its price. Just think about it, your Vette is better than the 430 .

    Thank you. I thought this article is interesting because it's recent, done by a trust-worthy magazine, and includes comparison to great competitors.

    Too bad I can't find the pages on the Ferrari & 997 Turbo for you to translate also. I am surprised at the low Ferrari rating, but you know someone here is going to tell you "but all Corvette's look the same so it doesn't matter anyway." Kidding aside, a F car is an F car; I'll take one anytime.

    For those considering the 997 Turbo Coupe & Convertible, *if* recent "funny" reviews by US car mag's have you concerned, please take this review as one indication that the Turbo is an exceptional car and in many aspects still one of the best in the world.

    The 997 Turbo is not the top scorer in this test series. The 997 GT3 has scored 77 points out of 80, followed by some supercars like Carrera GT, Zonda F and Koenigsegg CCR.

    The Ferrari F430 loses massive points due to the bad wet handling, where it is very slow. Apart from that, it is commonly competitive.

    In all these years I have never considered this scoring system as a valuable part of this test. Read the text and the explanations to the diverse test segments, in conjunction with the test data it gives you some essential information about those cars.

    Thank you for your input. I'm glad I only wrote that the Turbo is "one of the best."

    Agreed with you about the 430. The fact that this wonderful car scores so low is almost evidence that the scoring system is far from perfect.

    And I'll leave the Turbo vs. GT3 debate to the hundreds of threads already on various Porsche discussion boards! I do have one question please (I assume you have the magazine?): In this particular test, was the GT3 part of the comparison? Thanks in advance.

    The so called "Supertest" ist presumably the main feature of SportAuto magazine, one car featured in each issue. Therefore there is no direct comparison between two models. The system features a couple elements that influence the scoring, amongst these combined acceleration/braking performance, lapt times on N'ring Northloop and Hockenheim Short track, aerodynamic balance and handling manouvres.

    The GT3 scored 10/10 in every aspect apart from the following (where it scored nine points each):
    -acceleration (there simply are faster cars out there),
    -tire grip (1.3 g cornering is rated with nine points, more extreme sport tires will have a hard time on the above mentioned wet handling circuit) and on the
    -Nordschleife circuit. Quite surprsing is the fantastic grip and handling in the wet, tire temperature being the critical element. That said and not very surprising, quite a few people reported that those tires have a difficult time to warm up in cold and/or wet conditions.
