Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

Can't make up my mind and only a few days left before final order needs to be placed. Anyone with any pics to help me out please!?

Car Color = GT silver, black interior. Can't find any good pics to help me decided on top....

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

Get the black. No metal frame lines. Dirt and wear eventually makes non-black look like a tarp. Even when clean, compared to the beautiful paint, the cloth top can't compete. Best to downplay it, IMO.

I agree for the mostpart on the "usefullness" of black, but everyone has black. I like the way Stone Grey would look on a silver car, that's what I would do

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

Non-black bothers me because this guy down the road has a nice well-kept Miata. The top is light-colored and kinda old-looking and everytime I see it when it is up, it looks like sh*t compared to rest of car. If he had gotten black the car would still look just fine. Sorry.

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

    mish,

With your color combo, I'd definitely go with the black top.
I don't personally care for too many colors- too busy looking. GT silver, black and black will look great!

I'm going with AS, grey and grey. I figure I'll be driving with the top down 90% of the time. I much prefer one or two colors on a car only.

C4S Cab order already? I wonder when for N. America? Must contact dealer. Good luck!

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

If you go with the grey top, I'd go with grey interior too!
    Or 2 tone int.: black/grey.

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

If you plan to keep the car for a long time, get black for the reasons listed above.

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

    GT Silver on Black Top

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

Hope it Helps... I chose the black top to keep the lines of the car being a CAB. [top Pic]

This here i think is stone gray not sure...

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

Thanks for all the advice guys! Initially It was to be a black top, but I used the Car Configureator on the Porsche WWW site (Carrera S model for colors) - and that Grey just looked great.

There is a new option for 2 tone interior - black / grey combo but again, I wasn't able to actually see it - only 'imagine it' as the dealer was still awaiting his official order book....

Gosh, only got another few days left, and I can't even find one Stone Grey pic - maybe I should just revert back to good old black!....

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

    mish,

Check out the Feb/March 2005 issue of Christophorus. It has a silver cab with grey top (on cover) and more inside with even a pic with the top up- looks great! Also, I believe a while back someone(RC?) posted some pics outside the factory of a silver 997 w/ grey top.

Can someone scan those pics from the magazine please?

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

    SVN,

Thanks for the heads up ...I'll try and find the cover... If anyone does have the cover would be amazing if you could give us a scan - Thanks!

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

I never liked the black top on a silver 911. Thats why my car has a blue one. I think the black ist to harsh to the silver. On my next one I will go with the stone grey. Its not that light than the former light-grey on the 996. And - I think there are not that many cars out who have this top color!

Here is a blown up pic...from Christophorus...terrible quality unfortunately....

The Car Configurator is misleading because they are not real photographs.

The materials of the top and the car are very different (paint and cloth) so in reality you're gonna be faced with a stark contrast, even though the share the same color.

The lighter color top attracts attention to itself. Perhaps at the detriment of the beautiful paint.

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

I'd get the grey myself, that would look sharper. Tops only get old and dirty looking when the owners allow them to get old and dirty looking, or unknowingly accelerate the process. Proper upkeep isn't tough, just a matter of doing it, and using mild soaps so you don't prematurely age the material.

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

Also the car looks are somewhat functional (duh). Black tires, black gasketing around windows, black kerf lines betwen body panels, black shadows in wheel wells and other apertures. Considering the fact that the top material is also quite functional (the preference would be for a metal painted top) why would you try to aestheticize the very incongruous cloth top with non-black? You're just adding more visual elements to the car's exterior. Black top "matches" black gasketing, tires kerf lines etc... .

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

If you take a historic look at automotive design and style, you find that black tops were not typically used unless the exterior or interior was also black. Especially the interior. The top would always be an integral part of the color scheme of the car, not a utilitarian and unwanted necessity like weatherstripping. If you're going with a black interior, then the black top would be historically appropriate (let's all admit, that cars of the 30's and 50's were incredibly elegant when it comes to color-schemes). But if you're doing a grey interior, the grey top would be a natural. You wouldn't find many early 60's Porsche Speedsters or late-50's-early-60's Mercedes SL's with black tops, unless the interior was black. Otherwise, the roof would accent the interior color. Just some ramblings from the heyday of automotive style!!! The same general rules applied to vinyl roofs as well.

    Hummm..., interesting. Good points all.

Do you remember a Mercedes roof material which was deeply black, almost like black velvet, or was I dreaming this? THAT was a nice black, hides the frame members.

But I DO see your points, if you keep the grey top clean and take proper care of it..., they look good on the day of delivery.

The other thing is Boxster tops; I see alot of them and they ALL have these crease marks, and slight abrasions in them. Which color shows these the least?

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

I'm not familiar with how the Boxster top folds and stows. Usually crease marks are an indication that you are pinching the top between the frame when it scissors into the "down" position. This can be avoided by carefully with your hand folding the roof material to the opposite direction, outside of the folding frame, not allowing it to get squished in the middle. With all the convertibles I've owned and still own, I have always used great care when lowering the top, figuring out the best way to get a fully collapsed accordian without pinching the top material, and I never leave the top down overnight, as that's bad news as well. Alot of people just callously cram the top down with no thought, and then leave it down for days until it rains. It tears them up if you're not careful.

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

The grey top looks like a faded black top. Strange looking imo. The black top looks the best. Especially with a Silver car. Otherwise you'll have a black interior, Silver car and grey top. Like I said strange. You'll likely spook most buyers in the re-sale market as well with a grey top.

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

If you get a grey top and a bit of tree sap, or bird crap (they eat berries and more) you have a spot on the top which you'll have to clean. I "know" it will never be completely clean, so after a few years, on closer examination, you have a bunch of "cleaning spots" where there's residue spots and abrasion marks. (God forbid it should be tree sap!)

Black is best. May not suit your aesthetic sensibility, but you'd be wise to get it, or that dark 'metropole bule" color.

Re: Stone Grey Top or Black Top on new C4S Convertible?

tree sap or tar, COMPLETELY, with zero discoloration or damage. It is also paint-safe. As for fruit-laden bird droppings, yes, that can be a bitch to deal with undetectably on a light-colored cloth top. So you've got a point with the birds. You're determined on this thread, it layed dormant for a week!!

    LOL

The background to my post is funny, this weekend, while we were out for a walk before going to a party, some ice cream dripped on my pants. I tried the napkin and water thing and didn't work. There remained a spot where ice cream was and where the cleaning took place. Had to go home and change them because would I would look like a slob at the party.

Guess what possesed me during the whole "ordeal?" I was thinking, "I gotta report back to the board [ you guys here] about how this might relate to a light-colored cab top!"

Sick huh? (I mean "sick" in a bad way).
