Longest 2000 miles of my life

Break in is taking FOREVER! I've driven 3 trips now, for a total of 1100 miles in the month and half I've owned the 997S. To and from work adds a few miles each week, but not enough fast enough. It gets harder and hard to avoid open throttle starts, redline shifts, and ABS stops.

    This is cruel!

Re: Longest 2000 miles of my life

I would say your running in method is pointless anyway because if you are car is doing lots of short trips it is not getting warm enough nor bedding in properly.

I just drove some longish trips up to about 500 miles and nailed it. Its a performance car so you might as well !

Re: Longest 2000 miles of my life

Just make sure the car is fully warmed up and you're "needlessly" shifting gears, to keep the RPMs varied.

Water warms up first, takes oil (and engine) significantly longer) to reach operating temp. After that op temp is achieved I reason the engine doesn't care if it's run for ten minutes of four hours.

When Porsche says "take long trips" that might be another translation quirk, like they say put "vaseline" on wheels. I think they mean trips as long as it takes for the engine to get to full at operating temp.

Re: Longest 2000 miles of my life

I like jjr1's way of thinking. You do know that break in is 1000 KM in the rest of the world, right?

    Just floor it!

nah, not THAT big a deal. When I achieved required mileage on my 986S, it was amazing fun for about a half hour and then you get over it, so to speak. So relax, it's not like the whole car transforms into a CGT! THAT would be torture.

    hang in there

I took a few days off work and just drove and enjoyed my new car out in the country. My first Porsche... Best thing I did... a great holiday! Did the suggested 3000km in a week and so didn't have to feel guilty about using those revs after. SUrely you could take longer trips in the vast USA!!

Look on it as being character-building.

Re: Longest 2000 miles of my life

I'm among the believers in getting a good number of stone-cold to operating temp to stone-cold cycles into the break in period.

The metalurgy indicates that metals must be "seasoned" which means brand new castings (engine block and heads) don't have their natural service "memory" until repeated cold-hot-cold cycles. So to best break in your engine it is impt that it achieve this memory (become seasoned) as the other parts are seating and wearing-in.

IOW, one or two 1000 trips are probably not as "good' as several 100-200 mile trips where the engine is allowed to totally cool off between trips.

    This is even more cruel...

    ...I broke 2000 miles yesterday.

    Woo-hoo!

Point taken. I read previous threads on breaking in while waiting for my car and decided this was most appropriate for me. We did anywhere from 400km to 700 per day.

I only drive 7km in traffic to work and back, and the oil hardly reaches operating temp, so IMO it would have been worse to subject my engine to this, than running in at higher temps with less thermal cycling.

Re: Longest 2000 miles of my life

It took me forever to reach 2000 miles, also. But the car sound so much nicer above 4000 rpm! Can't wait to get the PSE installed!
