There have been rumors about a 998 right around the corner in 2008, I never believed it until I saw how the 997 was not really a new model, like (964->993->996 etc) but rather a modded 996. On the otherhand, if there is going to be a 997TT released maybe one years later after the 996C2, it doesn't make sense to introduce the 998 just 2 years after. However, I don't think we will ever know wether its true or not since Porsche would never allow us to know either so as not to hurt 997 sales. So we will have to wait and see until they want us to know.

I don't believe 998 would be a MY '08 / '09, it's too early for a all new model after 997 to be out in 2 or 3 years.
Porsche will probably have another minor facelift for the 997 as they did for the 996 (MK I to MK II) while they allocate all their resources for the 4-door car.
I have a feeling the all new (revolution) 998 it'll be a MY '10 / '11.

The "all new" 911 (998) is planned for MY 2010 (summer 2009) as far as I heard. But of course a lot of things can change til then... And of course there will be a facelift for the 997 two to three years later, probably with the 997 Turbo introduction or one year later.

I'm sorry, but to me the 997 really is "only" a facelift of the current 996. Don't be fooled by the new model-number, by bigger wheels and nice tech mods. At the end of the day, it'll still be a 996 with different fenders, bumpers, cockpit, mirrors and door handles... but as the first 997-look-bodykits for the 996 will prove, the 997 is too heavily based on the 996. It's a change like e.g. from the 911 SC up to the 964 or from 964 to 993. It's an evolution of an existing model... not a _new_ model like we know it from 99% of all other car manufacturers.
When e.g. Mercedes-Benz announces a new SL model or a new E-Class... then you can be sure that 99% of all parts will be new on that new model. This is BY FAR not true for the "new" 911 model (997)...

The 996 was the only one breaking that tradition, and it received a lot of flack for that, and now it's the other way around, the 997 is criticised for FOLLOWING the tradition?

Well, anyone know what percentage of 997 parts are from the 996 parts bin? e.g. same rear side windows? same windshield? knobs and handles in the interior?

Honest question: what did you expect? Be happy that Porsche doesn't do radical design changes like other manufacturers because you and others end up with "old" cars in a blink of an eye. Even the 993 still looks somehow modern because Porsche avoided radical design changes on the 911.
You're right about Mercedes, this is why I sold my E55 after only a few months of ownership because the 99% new parts didn't work well.
Again: tell me what you expect from Porsche? How should a 997 look alike? Like a Mercedes SL? Like a BMW 6series? Like a Carrera GT?
Sorry for being sarcastic but I really don't get it: do you want a 911 or just another Porsche?

I have to agree to JSeven. Of all spy shots and conceptual drawings of the 997, the one you quoted is the one I was looking to the most. Yes, it would have been a heavy design break... but it still resembles enough of the classic 911 look.
Anyway... the issue with the 997 is that it's not really an evolution forward, but a return to an old-skool retro look. This is the difference between what has going on with the evolution of the 911 in the past and today.
The latest pics of the 997 do look pretty good though and I am very excited to see it live. But the pic JSeven posted would have been the better and more advanced step forward.
I guess that the 997' windows will be the same or that the 996' windows will at least fit. The interior is different from the 996, so the knobs definitely won't fit.
Do you want to build a body-kit?

don't like the pic above at all ... too fat ... to kinky ... to stylish ... but most people don't no the difference between styling and design anyway !!! Will you please have in mind, that a Porsche is not a 99 $ gadget ... only to last for a few months ... to be thrown away for another hyped don't_know_what .........
The pics of a grey 997 S shown here few days before were much better ... for my taste

, the spy shot shows a car with beautiful fluid lines and some design flows shown on the 996 were correct in this car. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder and for me, the 997 should look like the car I shown above. Time will tell if I'm right or wrong, we will see when the 998 cames out if it will be inspired on the 997 or will have some Carrera GT blood on his lines.J.Seven

It looks to me like the 997 is to the 996 as the 993 was to the 964. Although the 993 looks quite a bit different from the 964, it shares much of the technology and many of the parts.
According to Porsche, the 964 was 85% new when compared to the Carrera 3.2. The 993 was certainly not 85% new, and was probably closer to 30%.
The 996 is not a bad car by any standard, although it isn't the looker that many of us wish it was. If the 997 is really just a facelift, is that such a problem? I don't think so.
