    The beast is coming....

    From GermanCarFans.com

    Update - 07/21/2005

Seen here driving on the German Nürburgring is the first prototype of BMW's much anticipated M3. These photos confirm our original report (see story below) of a 4 door M3 being brought back into the model range since the E36 platform. We also reported the M3 would receive a V8 engine. If you look closely at the hood you'll notice the entire center has been sectioned out and replaced with a specially fabricated cover. It cannot be determined from these photos if the cover is steel or another material, however, it is clear that the purpose of this modification is to compensate for a larger engine. Other indicators of this prototype's intentions can be seen in the massive cross-drilled front and rear brake rotors as well as dual split exhaust pipes carefully hidden under the rear bumper fascia. Unfortunately this prototype is not having a full dress rehearsal since M3 styled front and rear fascias are absent as standard 3 Series bumpers take their place.

    Re: The beast is coming....

I think this is the high power bi-turbo Diesel version, not the M3.

    Re: The beast is coming....

Having a look at the last pic, I'd say it's a very powerful Diesel 3series...

    Re: The beast is coming....

Their deisal doesn't require dual exhausts (neither does the current M3..hahaha,) but for history's sake, I would think that the dent in the hood and the dual exhausts equal M3 prototype.

I just wonder why the exhaust pipes show down, usually this is indication for a Diesel.

    Re: The beast is coming....

I agree, however, have you ever looked at a 7 series that is not a diesel? (all 7 series cars have their tips curved down) and they are underneath of the rear and not shown well. And the first 5 series cars that were released? (all of the first 5 series had turned down exhaust tips too and none of those were diesel). Moreover, there hasn't been a dual curved down exhaust BMW in the history of bmw.

    Re: The beast is coming....

There is another thing that I noticed that BMW does with its cars while they are testing... they tend to test their M fascias and everything during the pre production of the regular cars. Example, the in 94' when the z3 was being tested in cold weather and various other places, people took pictures of the car with a little bit of tape, and they thought that was what the car would look like. As it turned out a few years down the road, that picture showed what the M roadster would look like, not what the base Z3 would look like.

    335 biturbo diesel?

    Re: The beast is coming....

I believe it a high powered diesel engine too, that car has a huge hump in the hood and diesel engines are larger, the car has no aerokit, it has chrome window borders and finnally pointed down exhausts... never has an M3 had these things while diesel or non-///M petrol sedans do. Maybe they have managed to drop their V8 diesel in the 3-series

    Re: The beast is coming....

If that's the new M3 then it truly is a sleeper....I'm already falling asleep just by looking at it

    Re: The beast is coming....

i wouldn't think that the diesel would have that serious brakes tho

    Re: The beast is coming....

Those brakes are equivalent to a large pizza or 14" if you're counting. M3 all the way...

    Re: The beast is coming....

they ruined the entire legacy of the m3 with this pos design.
it looks like a 15k car that poor college students drive. even Scions look better than this.
what the hell is up with bangle? we should start a class action suite for ruining the m3!!

    Re: The beast is coming....

Looks like a pregnant z3 coupe!

    Re: The beast is coming....

    BBS LM rims, nice

ouii , i can't wait for the coupes

    Re: The beast is coming....

I still disagree guys. The very first pics of the NEW M5 were those shot of it on a flat bed. It had the normal 5 series body and everything.. the only reason anyone could tell the difference was that it had the dual exhaust pipes, cross drilled brakes and a larger caliper. I will find a pic for you guys to show you what I mean.

    Re: The beast is coming....

Alright guys, here is a pic of the first sighting and picture of the E39 M5 that was testing with the 400hp v8 engine back in 98. The only way a person can tell is the daul exhausts.

Here is another one that shoes the first NEW 5 series (E60) but it is the M5 testing (before the M5 was released)...the only difference that was noted by autoweek was... the quad pipes.

here we have the M5 and the M6 together, the M5 further along.. and the M6 with the standard 6 series body.. but with a difference.. (the pipes)

And the VERY first pictures that someone took b/c they knew the difference (big brakes and the exhaust pipes)

All M5's with a few changes... none look like the NEW M5... they all look like normal 5 series cars.

I have to agree with Doc... I hope that's just a test mule because that is one boring looking car.

    Re: The beast is coming....

1- It's very unlikely a diesel would have cross drilled brake rotors of at least 13" diameter. This is probably the M3.
2- If you want to camouflage your test mule, bolting the down curving tips onto the cat back exhaust pipe would be a cheap way to do it.
3- Most of the extra body details in the current M3 are primarily for show (the side grill in the fender, for instance), so putting the M powertrain in the standard 3 sedan is an easy camouflage job that should make little impact on the test mule's performance. Of course, you'd probably have to cut a hole in the hood, since even the old M3's 3.2L I6 required a different hood to fit. Given the width of this hole, a V8 seems likely, and consistent with the various rumors floating around.
4- I thought I had read on another site that there will be a sedan, coupe and cab version of the M3 this time around, but maybe someone else can comment on this.

    Interesting photos in any case...

    Re: The beast is coming....

Who cares what it is...diesel, petrol,...does not matter.

It's an ugly car no matter what engine you drop under the hood. I'm pretty sure that the upcoming M3 will a blast to drive but ugly as any other.... BMW

    Re: The beast is coming....

the new 3 series is not distinctive enough, however, it is competing in a NEW world. Infiniti, Audi, and Mercedes all have entry cars that are nipping at the heels- out of all of them.. the 3 series BEATS them in looks, maybe not in sexy ness-- the g35 looks nice (but the g35 isn't unique, it's a nissan Z)... it's a race.. bmw is winning it but barely, WAIT for the M3. I remember seeing the M3 on my friends computer screen (the yellow m3.. we have all seen it)... It BLEW my mind. The M5 with the fire background BLEW my mind. BMW knows what it must do. give them a chance.

    Re: The beast is coming....

Those test mules differ very little from the finished product.
I wouldn't hold my breath that it will look a lot different.
BMW design dynamics are completely ruined...real Sleepers
