    One year service check

I am rapidly approaching my first year of ownership and have driven around 5,000 miles. I am considering taking my car into the dealer for a one year service to include an oil change and inspection for the mere sum of $395. Would you recommend getting it checked out at this point or just getting the oil changed and waiting for the two year/15,000 service check.

    Re: One year service check

The Carrera carries nearly twice as many quarts of a high quality synthetic oil compared to the oil found in an ordinary automobile engine. At 5000 miles, I can't imagine the oil would need changing unless all of those miles consisted of very short trips which prevented the motor from getting completely warmed up.

    Re: One year service check

I am inclined to get the oil changed at a minimum due to completing the initial break-in period with the possiblity of metal particles in the oil. I would think approx $150 would be fair to pay for just an oil change but I was primarily asking about the full service offered by my dealer for $395. Is it worth it in your opinion?

    Re: One year service check

Change the oil and filter (after ONE year) and forget about wasting your time at the dealer.

Change it yourself and save $300.

Inspection? Gee, there's no required inspection at one year. I'd only bring the car in before two years if you have problems (warrenty will cover them).

    Re: One year service check

I got my annual oil change at the dealer for $129. For that price, I don't brother to do it myself.

    Re: One year service check

This is taken from my dealer's website where service requests are taken:

    Yearly maintenance

Diagnosis system: Read out fault memory
Underside of vehicle and engine compartment: Visual inspection for leaks (oils and fluids) and chafine (wires, lines and hoses)
Underbody paneling: Check that the underbody paneling is securely fastened - replace any damaged and/or missing panels.
Radiators and air inlets: Visual inspection for external soiling and blockage
    Power-assisted steering: Check fluid level
    Engine: Check oil level
Brake hoses and lines: Visual inspection for signs of damage, correct routing and corrosion. Brake fluid: Check level
Steering gear: Visual inspection of the bellows for signs of damage
Tie rod ends: Check play and dust bellows
Axle joints: Check play, visual inspection of the dust bellows for signs of damage
Drive shafts: Visual inspection of the boots for leaks and signs of damage
Tires and spare wheel: Check condition and tire pressure
Vehicle lights: Check operation. All headlights: Check setting. Horn: Check operation
Windshield washer, headlight washer: Check fluid level and nozzle settings, make sure to check the antifreeze during winter months
All other electrical equipment as well as indicator and warning lights: Check operation
    During road or dynamometer test:
Brake pedal and parking brake (also operating travel), engine, clutch, transmission, automatic speed control, steering system, heating, air-conditioning system and instruments: Operation-test
Oils, fluids: Visual inspection for leaks
    Note:

On vehicles which are driven less than 9,000 miles yearly (which is my situation), a yearly maintenance must be performed. A scheduled maintenance with oil-filter change must be performed after 2 years at the latest, unless the mileage for a scheduled major maintenance is reached earlier.

If the yearly mileage is more than 9,000 miles, it is recommended to perform the maintenance at the scheduled mileage intervals.

Proper care and maintenance will preserve the value of your Porsche and safeguard its functional capability. This will also protect your right to make warrantly claims.

I tend to agree with MMD, but what about these dealer recommendations. Is this just an attempt for them to make more money? If you didn't have this service performed and something catastrophic happened a few months down the road could Porsche try to get out of covering it under warranty. I am sure I am making too big a deal out of this but I just wonder what everyone else is doing.

    Re: One year service check

This is kinda schizo on Porsche's part.

They say they don't want to see us for two years.

Does that mean they are only concerned that they will get thru the potentially expensive warrenty period and then not care what the long-term health of the car will be?

"Everybody" says change your oil EVERY year (more if car sits, or it's dusty, or lots of miles). "They" say change it every year so the engine lasts longer.

Should I trust Porsche to care about me keeping the car's engine healthy for 10 or 15 years?

Or should I think they just want their cars to sound like great deals for the naive buyer in that maintenence is sooooo minimal?

IMO, if you want to keep the car at least change your oil every year. Maybe have faith that an _inspection_ isn't necessary for two years (unless you're doing 25k miles or more).

    Re: One year service check

I think you'd be fine with just the oil change.

I had my oil and filter changed at 5392 miles early last November. I am (at least as of this evening) down about 400 ml, and that is the apparent consumption over the last 2,600 miles (I had 8959 miles as of this evening). I haven't added any oil since the last oil change. Two weeks ago I received an email from the dealer reminding me of an "annual check" at 10,000 miles. I will probably have them service it at that mileage.

But you are right. How much service is enough?

I think that Porsche has changed the service intervals to drum up business for the dealers. Why else would they have had the extended service interval when introducing the 997 (20,000 miles) and now they have apparently (I thought I read this on one thread some time back) gone back to a more frequent service recommendation, unless they messed up big time with the original extended service schedule?

    Re: One year service check

Just change the oil!! No need other service and ispection!

    Re: One year service check

Cabin air filter change too. Oil and this filter change are straight forward DIY items. Brake fluid flush/change at two years.

    Re: One year service check

BTW, before the two year point, nothing is stopping you from removing cabin and engine air filters and blowing them out yourself.

Here's what our own Beltar found:

    Re: One year service check

I ended up just doing the oil and filter change myself using the instructions in renntech.org. I built me a set of ramps using a double thichness of 2x10 lumber (got the idea from a renntech post). It elevated the car enough from all four wheels for me to comfortably get under the car to perform this maintenance. My wife could not believe that I was taking my time to do this myself -- "you haven't changed the oil yourself in the other cars for years". I just told here that I was bonding with it. I really enjoyed doing it myself. There aren't many things you can do yourself on these cars so we might as well do what we can.

    Re: One year service check

I do that to my air filter every 5-6,000 miles. It makes a difference.
