    Tire wear and tire pressure

My rear tires got down to the tread bars and I noticed that the wear was most on the center of the tires. I thought that meant over-inflation, and since I ran on 33PSI front and 41 PSI rears (PAG recommends 36PSI front, 4 PSI rear for my 996 C4) I thought I should drop those further. Wrong! My tire installer told me today that it is precisely the opposite - the tires were worn in the center due to under-inflation. That has to do with the fact that these tires have short, very stiff, sides (18" wheels), which buckle out when the tire is under-inflated, pulling the patch up, and more so in motion, aided by centrifugal force. This means uneven wear AND a smaller patch, therefore less available gripping surface.

So, there you have it. This is the price to pay to run high performance tires. Want performance and even wear? use the recommended tire pressures. Want more comfort and accept diminished performance? lower the tire pressures (but not by much for safety sake).

Re: Tire wear and tire pressure

A great read, thanks for posting. What is your mileage on these tires as well as their manufacturer and style?

Re: Tire wear and tire pressure

I just replaced Pirelli Rosso with 15000 miles. The fronts were great and the rears were close to the wear bars. They could still run another 2-3000 miles. I just replaced them to be absolutely safe. I bought Michelin PS Ribs (Porsche N1 rated for the 996 C4).

Re: Tire wear and tire pressure

I replaced the OEM Pirelli's at a tad over 7,000 miles with Michelin PS2's. The rears were down to the wear bars and the fronts were less then 50% so the fronts would not have lasted for another set of Pirelli rears. I used the factory recommended pressures and my tire wear was even across the tires only the rears wore out much faster.

Re: Tire wear and tire pressure

I bought my 997 C2 with about 7500 miles. I'm now close to 9000 and my rear Pirellis P1 Rosso are gone. No thread in the center of the tires. I checked tire preassure about 500 miles ago and they were under inflated. Front tires were also under inflated but still have some thread on them. I guess it is a combination of under inflated and the weight of the car on the rear tires that ended up damaging the tires.

Re: Tire wear and tire pressure

I replaced my rear PS2s at 14,000 miles. The outside of the rears were fine, but the inside was worn considerably. As a rule, the tire pressure was maintained at 42PSI. Considering the performance of the tire and the way I drive, I am happy with the wear of these tires.

The front tires were replaced at 8000 miles due to a broken belt. A single pot hole cost me $1100.

Re: Tire wear and tire pressure

This is a characteristic that we have had to deal with since about 1976 when the Pirelli P7 was introduced on the Turbo. TPMS helps keep me spot on with the tire pressures so that I don't wear them out prematurely. It's amazing how quickly you can affect tire life with the wrong pressures,--either too high or too low!

Re: Tire wear and tire pressure

    Hey guys long time.........
I do 37 in the front and 44 in the back per porsche suggestion on my Ps2's

Re: Tire wear and tire pressure

I used to do 37/44. However Porsche does recommend (in the owners manual) 33/39 if the total load is less tha 350lbs. I switched to 33/39 sinse I found that the lower pressure eliminate almost all the rattle and vibrations in the cabin. I adjust my tire pressure such that it would read 33/39 if measured at the max temp during the day. I gain ~5 psi after ~30 min of driving at ~55mph, so my tires will be at 38/44psi max.

Re: Tire wear and tire pressure

For my Bridgestones I start the morning at 31 and 36 (rear).
Seems to be working. 11,000 miles and counting.

Re: Tire wear and tire pressure

I keep my P-Zero at 34/40. Front looks new and rear has a least 60% left
