    New head of R&D at Porsche

    Is this good or bad?

    According to AM&S, Duerheimer is off to Bentley and Bugatti, and he is being replaced as head of Porsche R&D by a guy from VW, a Wolfgang Hatz...

    After doing a quick search, this is what I have found on him:

    Within the Volkswagen Group, Wolfgang Hatz has been affectionately dubbed "Mr. Engine." His career began in 1983 when he joined BMW's Formula 1 program. He then developed the four-cylinder engine for the first E30-based BMW M3 before joining Porsche's Formula 1 program in 1989. Returning to road cars, he developed the 3.8-liter engine in the Porsche 964 RS 3.8 before leaving to join Opel's motorsport division in 1996. Victory in the International Touring Car Championship followed before he joined Fiat in 1997 as the man in charge of the group's engine development — including Alfa Romeo and Ferrari. He joined Audi in 2001 as its head of powertrain development and became the head of powertrain for the entire Volkswagen Group at the beginning of 2007. - Edmunds Insideline.

    If he has been the one in charge of Audi engines over the last 10 years then he sounds like a good person for the job as the Audi powertrains have vastly improved during this time period.

    Pretty impressive background; thanks for posting it. Perhaps good news, after all. I think engines and styling is where Porsche will likely be making significant changes in the coming years.

    Not sure if this "fits" this thread but today I had a little talk to one of our sources, claiming that Mr. Piech wants a sportier, "purer" Porsche model range. The Panamera doesn't seem to be one of his favorite Porsche models but surprisingly, he supports the Cayun project.

    Not sure if this "fits" this thread but today I had a little talk to one of our sources, claiming that Mr. Piech wants a sportier, "purer" Porsche model range.

    That is good to hear.

    I am less concerned about having sedans and SUVs in the range than I am about making sure that every offering, regardless of format, is as well engineered as can be, with a true performance orientation, not just "sporting aesthetics", or "surface sportiness".

    Based on Mr. Piech's background, I imagine (hope?) Porsche is going back in that direction, and moving away from the poseur's special it has been inching towards in the last several years.
