    Is a 996 worth it?

    Hi,

I have been looking at purchasing a new Porsche - and have been going back and forth with the 997S - and waiting for the facelift model.

I have been struggling with the amount of power that these cars have - as I love the performance aspect of cars - and love power.

I have been on the 997 boards - learning a bit more etc...

In the end - I keep coming back - feeling like I may end up wanting a little more.

    SO......

I started to look at Turbo Models - originally thinking only new - but then - I started to look at the prices of the 996Turbo - and have to say that I can get a really good deal out there on this car.

    Question is this -

Being an older model - is there anything that I should be aware of - or weak on these cars?

Do they carry any stigma of - Oh - That's the Old Model?

Just looking for some thoughts and insights here...

    Thanks for the feedback.

I saw a 996TT on the road today and it looked great. Just a plain silver one. You can modify the heck out of them and they are pretty reliable if you buy one of the later ones. I think the first year or two had some issues.

Look at my signature. I own a 2005 996TSCab (purchased new), now tuned to 650-700HP with Evolution Motorsports' GT700 kit, and a 1997 993TT (purchased last summer used with 24K miles), now tuned to 650HP and soon to be 700+HP with a Protomotive kit installed by Protosport in New Jersey (I passed inspection, so later this summer I'll have Protosport swap my GT2871R turbo's for bigger GT3071R or 3076 turbo's). I have had near zero issues with the 996 (a blown Bosch MAF, replaced with a Hitachi with no problems), and my 993 runs flawlessly-it has a 3.8L conversion from 3.6L with Mahle race spec. pistons and cylinders, GT2 Evo cams, twin-plug ignition, Sachs 993/Euro RSR race clutch/lightweight flywheel, Protomotive exhaust/intercooler/plumbing and more, on an H&R Clubsport suspension-and it ABSOLUTELY FLIES-it's my favorite car by a mile.

As Joe said, find a good recent 996TT, get a PPI to ensure no mechanical surprises and you will never look back.

Re: Is a 996 worth it?

My two biggest issues with the 996 that actually remain with the 997.

    1. The Non Turbo/GT3/GT2 cars have an inferior motor that is prone to failure and underengineered. This issue remains true on the 997.

    2. Interior quality. Whilst easily rectified by ordering/finding a high spec car with full leather/various exclusive interior options, the base models have too much plastic. 997 Interior is better but overall design is not to my liking. Door handles/etc on the 996 were so sexy.

Re: Is a 996 worth it?

It truly depends what you are looking for. First of all there have been some improvements made on the 997 series, for example regarding interior quality and suspension tuning. You should drive both models to figure out what you are looking for, the 996 TT feels much different to a 997 TT and even more to the 997 Carrera models which should come with a similiar price tag if purchased brand new.

I personally would consider the TT-S models, their PCCBs are different to the one's on the regular TT, GT2/3 and C4S models of the 996 series. If you would be unsatisfied with the handling, consider one of the various options available (factory-kit X73, Bilstein PSS9). Those Turbo models are regularly better equipped than the cheaper variants, so the plastic pieces might be covered with leather.

Since turbocharged engines can be modified very easily, one should find out if the car was modified in any way by its previous owner. I would be cautios purchasing such a car.

Re: Is a 996 worth it?

The 996 Turbo will get you smiling especially when carefully chosen a second hand sample. You will love the power.. they're really reliable and like mentioned before easy to tune!

That being said I think a 996TT is definitely worth every penny!

996 TT is a really good car. But you have to think of a couple of aspects.
    1. Are you going to modify 996 TT? If yes, this car's got a lot of potential.
    2. If you don't really care about that then go for the FL 997S. I've been owning a 997S for 1.5 years now and I have to say that the car is awesome. You won't regret it, I can assure you that. Also 997 S FL can be sold later at a decent price...
In terms of reliability, 997 S is just PERFECT!!!! Same for performance. The car's engineering is such an advantage that other cars need to a power of more that 420 horses to smoke you...
Good luck with your choice!!! And whatever you choose, be sure that Porsches are made to impress you and keep you satisfied with their engine performance and chassis.

Re: Is a 996 worth it?

996tt is worth every penny. Good Luck

Re: Is a 996 worth it?

It really depends what you want to use the car for??

If it is for a road car, you cannot beat a 996 Turbo for Value for money with huge performance.

However if you want a track car stay away from the 996TT as they tend to understeer too much and are not rewarding to drive on a track.

    Good luck with your choice!!

Re: Is a 996 worth it?

I have a 2006 Powerkit Carrera S with Aerokit and many options that made the MSRP climb to over $122,000!  I have been,  for the past 1 1/2 years debating in my head wether or not to sell my car and get a 996 Turbo now that I may be able to do so without money out of pocket.  I have 22,800 miles on my car and had delivery of it in March, 2006.  I have several reasons for wanting to go that route:  first,  I don't track my 997 as I have an 87 Carrera for that;  second,  I worry about the value of my car 2 or more years down the road - will it get to be a $30,000 car?;  third is the inferior engine design that,  according to some experts was not designed for longevity or with long term ownership in mind,  but for cheap manufacture to ensure high profit margins.  I love the way my Carrera S drives,  feels,  sounds and looks very much.  Nevertheless,  I am an enthusiast and an engineer and having what may be an underengineered car and paying top dollar for it,  as if it was a thoroughbred,  leaves me with a bad taste in the mouth.  What would you guys do?  Would you consider changing a car like mine for a 2003 or newer 996 Turbo because of its superior engine and transmission even if the interior and the looks are not as nice as the 997s?  I am attracted to one with an X50 package.

Any help with the decision is very helpful and appreciated.  I intend to keep the car for a very long time and have concerns on engine problems with the M97 engines.  So far mine has been trouble free but one never knows with the M96 and M97 engines.  Don't advise me to buy a 997 Turbo as it is out of my reach right now and a GT3 won't do it for me as I have a need for those rear seats.  Thanks!Smiley

Re: Is a 996 worth it?

Here is my experience - I was in your shoes and ready to pull the trigger on a 997 Carrera S with Aero Kit and upgrades etc. Beautiful car - kind of left me wanting a little more power - but I thought I could get past it. I always buy new cars - and so I never entertained a 996. I would love to have a 997TT but like you - this is out of reach.

So in a sense - I was happy with the car I was about to buy - but felt it was not the all the car that I had hoped it would be.

Right before I was going to buy the car - I Took a drive in a 996TT. Yes - the interior may not be as up to par as the 997 - but trust me when I say this - the Carrera S is not in the same boat as the 996TT. The driving experience you get from the  996TT is out of this world!

Not to mention that prices  that these cars are going for now - it's a buyers dream. I felt that what the 996TT didn't have in certain things in the interior etc - it made up for it in leaps and bounds in the overall car.

After my whole search - I am hoping to finally take ownership of a 996TT next week if things fall into place correctly.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Is a 996 worth it?

I own a 996TT and a 996 Cab.  Last weekend I spent some time in a 997 C2s and I must say I really liked it.  I loved the new interior, the adjustable suspension and the sport mode.  Around town in "normal" mode it rode well and was a joy to drive.  In sport mode the entire experience changed and it was a beast.  I would love to own one as a DD.

Between that and a Turbo it would come down to DD vs. weekend car.  If I wanted a DD the comfort mode would be more important to me than the extra power.  As a weekend car it's hard to match the power of a turbo!

    Good luck.

    Roy
