F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

    http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/09/try-try-again-fia-puts-further-restrictions-on-f1-freezes-eng/

With regards to F1's six engine suppliers, Mosley commented that "there is no need to develop an F1 engine any further."

Other limits were set on the R&D efforts of the F1 teams.
I suppose this is meant to make things more "competitive?"

Re: F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

In one way, it is bad.

But if it can make the races more fun to watch (ie more overtaking), then bring it on!

Re: F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

omg, now this... F1 is done.. its dead..
I cant believe this, F1 was like at the edge of technology..

Re: F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

Will the ACO capitalize on this for prototype classes?

Re: F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

They could let them develop 'greener' engines. Would be interesting.

    Not the ACO I know!

Re: F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

This is insane. A stop of any development is the stop of progress and future.

F1 is already boring, so the stop of engine development makes it worse. May be the power is enough, they could develop on consumption and emission reduction?

I will not watch F1 any more... boring!

Agreed. Banning technology development in general is crap. Also, the teams spend much more money on aerodynamics with several wind tunnels etc. than on engine development. Why don't they limit the overall budget per team. So the team has to decide where to invest it, engine, chassis or driver?

Re: F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

socialism/communism is taking over F1!!!! F1 and F1 R&D allows mortals like us to have a chance at a car like the 430 Scuderia and its F2004 gearbox!!! people who want equal cars can watch Nascar, Iroc, F3000, A1GP, etc... F1 is the pinacle of human ambition... Ferrari enjoys means possibly beyond any other team, but they lost in 2005 and 2006, with Schumi also out of the picture, which shows you that you need the $$$, or the Euros (hehehe), as well as the driver... it ain't all about financial means... teams lagging behind should either find cash-rich partners/sponsors, or sell out!!!

    That is funny!

I have a copy somewhere of a letter sent to F1 teams by Mosley's predecessor, Balestre, dated around 1990. He also guaranteed that the F1 engine spec would remain constant for 10 years.

Someone should tell the FIA organisation that recycling broken promises does not make it "green".

Re: F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

...why would F1 of ALL things go green? ugh.

Well, in the past FIA has introduced rules promoting low fuel consumption to propagate its "green" credentials!

However, my reference to "green" referred back to this instance of FIA "recycling" broken promises, so my comment was intended to be ironic.

In the words of that great management-methods guru Scott Adams, "It's not funny if you have to explain it".

Re: F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

That's hilarious. They actually care about saving money on the fuel an F1 car burns. How about the huge entourage that each team carries. Try and limit that to make a dent.

Re: F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

Sounds like ridiculous to me. A lot of companies want to invest in racing, because that is a way to get something in return for their development costs...
Now to forbid development, they will make companies loose interest in F1, and they will choose other race classes to go compete in.

Re: F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

This reminds me of Bill Gates' comment that nobody will ever need more than 640kB of memory. Now we can't even run Vista itself without 1GB!

F1 may take steps to equalize the teams but I find this one ridiculous. And what will happen when the 10 years are over? A sudden paradigm shift in technology?

Re: F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

F1 needs a lot of fixing.

They need to have some profit sharing to help the little teams get up to speed.

Bernie and the rich teams also need to spend more on track layout safety with bigger run-offs of gravel traps so that they can get rid of all the PANSY chicanes they have installed in the last ten years.

Back to big sticky slicks, ground effects, and TURBO's.

No more drivers aids, make them shift.

Fast, safe tracks where cars drift in corners at 150 mph +.

F1 did go green in the turbo era with pop-off valves and a limit on the gas available. Cars often ran out in the last few laps.

Re: F1 bans engine development for 10 years!

Maybe we can go back to the basics...good old fashioned sports car racing. I personally more enjoy seeing cars that I actually drive than seeing the equivelant of the space shuttle take off from a dead stop and blowing up in the first turn. Technology itself is not interesting unless it relates TO ME. We can build space stations and rocket ships and intercontinental missles...honestly, don't care. I'd rather see SEXY sport car shapes, than sterile surgical, formulaic shapes that only vary by color and wing angle. I truly respect formula one, but bring back sexy sports car racing like it existed in the 60's. Section off city streets and bring it closer to home! Sports car racing is more competitive, cheaper and still pushes the technology envelope for years to come. Much of Forumla 1 technology is useless for even the most focused supercars and only works at the track on a open wheel car, whereas GT1 racing directly created cars such as the Z06!
