New 997 Carrera Supercup arrived in Bahrain!

The world's fastest international one-make series celebrates a double premiere. For the first time the Porsche Michelin Supercup will compete on Arabian soil. The show race takes place as support to the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix from 1st to 3rd April. The extra racing weekend, where no points for this year's championship are awarded, came as an express wish from the Royal Palace as well as from the race organiser.

Fans and drivers alike are eager to experience the first race outing of the latest Porsche 911 GT3 Cup - which is based on the new 911 Carrera-997. The first racing version of the current 911 competes exclusively in the Porsche Michelin Supercup. With 400 hp, a sequential six-speed gearbox and the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB), as well as sophisticated race aerodynamics, this GT3 Cup is the most powerful and at the same time the most challenging racing sportscar in the history of the Porsche Michelin Supercup.

Jens Walther, manager of the Porsche Michelin Supercup: "We are naturally pleased about the popularity of our racing series and feel very honoured to receive such a kind invitation from His Highness the Crown Prince Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa. For Porsche, the Middle East is an important market with an impressive potential. From the sporting side, a new Grand Prix circuit with a totally new car will be an interesting challenge for everyone."

After the guest appearance in Bahrain the regular racing season will take off with the first of twelve rounds at the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola (Italy). Since 1993, the Porsche Michelin Supercup has been the only racing series with Gran Turismo sportscars to run exclusively as support to Formula 1.

This is a first picture showing two new 997 Supercup in front of the bunch of cars.

Re: New 997 Carrera Supercup arrived in Bahrain!

    LOVE IT

Re: New 997 Carrera Supercup arrived in Bahrain!

If you look closely at the green GT3Cup in the last picture, it doesn't have the two longitudinal holes in the front lip of the front bumper... looks much better this way than all the others with the holes (aerokit, GT3, etc) which only make it look even more busy. And those Cup mirrors look great on the car.

Re: New 997 Carrera Supercup arrived in Bahrain!

Carlos i agree with the lip theory of yours
I dont like the mirrors though, remind me of some after tuned BMW's ,or some Porsche of 70's too old fashioned for me plus the 997 mirrors are really great

I was thinking the same thing on both counts. The front looks cleaner, the regular mirrors are too big, and the cup mirrors seem to be the perfect size.

Re: New 997 Carrera Supercup arrived in Bahrain!

    sweet!

Re: New 997 Carrera Supercup arrived in Bahrain!

I was part of that parade last monday. The cup cars were in front and the other Porsche's, including mine, were behind them in a convoy. We had Police escorts which meant that we didn't have to stop for any traffic lights at all. Very corrupting experience.
We drove in a parade until we reached the racing curcuit and, clearly, everyone, including the cup drivers had a blast. The orange and green cup cars were driven by two very close friends of mine.

What did they say about the cars and race? Are they brothers?

I am curious how the PCCB and seq. gearbox are seen on those cars. Unfortunately I haven't heard the new GT3s, but I hope they have the same astonishing sound as their predecessors!

Re: New 997 Carrera Supercup arrived in Bahrain!

They both loved the new PCCB but they commented that the pads need alot of time to get up to tempreture. Won't be a problem with the road version.
It's not the seq. gearbox that they had to watch out for, it was the on/off cluth actually.

Overall, they had a blast, and Porsche AG was so generous with their support. The sound is as good, if not better, than the out-going model. I know because I was driving right behind them for an hour at least. That was one of the high lights of the whole event. To have 20 screaming 997 brand new cup cars and trying to play catch up with my street-driven turbo.
