    Newbie-986S owner-Exhaust Mod questions

    Howdy,

This is my first post, was part of FerrariChat, well still am, but decided against a 328 and bought a 2000 Boxster S. Been a Porsche/VW guy, so I guess its more close to home.

Anyway, I have some questions about modding a 986S, specifically the exhaust.

I know there are several companies that make after-market exhaust for the S, the 2 I'm specifically looking at are B&B and Fabspeed.

Any suggestions? Any experience with either?

I'm not concerned with resonance, as this is a weekend (non-track) car. I'd like to bump up the power a bit without supercharging or doing a RUF conversion.

The Fabspeed exhaust on the 996TT yields one of the highest results, but the B&B exhaust has a better sound according to some.

How about the cat bypass/racing cats on the Fabspeed setup? I read the other post about being 2ndary cats (pre-cats) but gaining 34 HP as claimed is a huge jump (almost 15% more power). Is it worth the risk?

I'm specifically looking for anyone who has done this and what the results have been. I'm in Colorado USA, with pretty strict emissions, but a real lack of power due to altitude.

Any input is appreciated, even if you point me off-list (trying Pete's board as well, looking for rennlist too).

    Thanks, James in Denver

    Re: Newbie-986S owner-Exhaust Mod questions

Unfortunately, I don't think Porsche left much power on the table with the Boxster regarding exhaust. Exhausts make a MUCH bigger difference on the turbos due to the way they make boost.

The only real reason to "upgrade" a Boxster exhaust is to make it sound better/louder/etc.

We do starve for power up here at altitude (>20% down in Denver and 50% down at the top of Mt. Evans). Only cure is a turbocharged motor (superchargers are not the way to go - you need to change the belt pulleys to optimize for a given altitude, so our varying conditions here - flats and mountains - makes superchargers unsuitable for big power gains)

    I have a 2001 2.7 986 with the following upgrades:
GIAC ecu flash, EVO high flow intake and a GHL exhaust, the three together produced all of 21 hp at the wheels, the car was dynoed before and after each mod. the exhaust alone produced 5 hp so don't waste your time there, it just sounds good but no power gain. The same mods would produce about 30whp in an S, so you'll have about 280hp crank.

P.S. many years ago someone on the boxster board www.ppbb.com dynoed several exhausts for the boxster and most of them LOST power, the only ones that didn't were the GHL and PSE if I remember correctly.

Thanks. The Fabspeed solution in its entirity has the modified chip, new headers and new mufflers with hi-flow cats. They claim an increase of 34 HP (rear wheel I think) but it costs $5,000 overall.

Is it worth it? Or should I go for the components with GIAC, EVO, and GHL?

    Thanks,
    James

I don't know which you'll like more but I can tell you that my car has been smogged twice in CA and passed with all the mods included, so I am happy wiht this setup.
