    My first Porsche

    Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say hello & thanks, after lurking on this site for a couple of years; I've learned so much from the posts on here.  I finally got a 997 turbo on Friday (after a great deal of agonising between the Turbo and GT3) Smiley ; it's a 1 year old meteor grey coupe (manual) with just over 3,000 miles on it.  It is such an awesome car!  I thought that waving goodbye to my e60 m5 would be painful, but it wasn't at all - the turbo has it all: the power, the looks, the all-round ability!  Owning and driving a 997 Turbo is every bit as exhilarating as I thought it would be!

Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

    Re: My first Porsche

Nice car. What made you pick the Turbo over the GT3? More of a daily driver? Congrat's

    Re: My first Porsche

I love the sound and precision of the GT3, but I need more of an all-rounder and 4 seats in particular.

    Re: My first Porsche

Congratulations.  You will love every moment behind the wheel of your Turbo.

    Re: My first Porsche

Wellcome and congrats for the car! You'll really enjoy it... but I bet you that in a few years time you'll be tempted with the GT3... as I was.

    Re: My first Porsche

Thanks again; there must be lots of "lurkers" like me, I think - I always wanted a turbo, but was dazzled by the Carrera S and 4S and the GT3 - it was difficult to choose one over the others! Each has so many different strengths.  I ordered a Carrera 4S originally (because of the PSE and turbo-style hips) but the lead time was so long that I bought an e46 M3 as a stop-gap and enjoyed it so much I didn't want to give it up!  One thing led to another and, after a test drive, I couldn't resist the v10 on the m5, so just had to get one!  But, all the while, I have had my heart set on the 997 turbo, so it was only a matter of time really ...  Tho' I must say that I even wavered over whether to go for the gen 1 or new gen 2 car!  But the car I've bought seems to be perfect, so I'm very happy indeed!

I will definitely be posting more now!

    Re: My first Porsche

Congratulations! You will hopefully post more from now on...

    Re: My first Porsche

Looking at the original pictures it look like you got the car from Bristol ?

Congrats on the new car and enjoy it !

    Cheers,

    Chris

    Re: My first Porsche

    Well spotted!

    Re: My first Porsche

Who did you deal with ? Emma ? I got my current Carrera S from her and have a GT3 on order from the same place. Top notch OPC IMO.

    Cheers,

    Chris

    Re: My first Porsche

As much as it pains me to say this, the depreciation makes a 2007-2008 Turbo the steal of the century and one of the smartest decisions for any car enthusiast at this time. Because of the changing world and whatever is going on at Volkswagen-Porsche Smiley , the heart and sould of this car, the Metzger Turbo engine, will go down in history as one of the greatest engines ever placed in a street car. You will not see anything like this engine on a street car again.

BTW, if you enjoy the precision of the GT3, there are ways to bring your Turbo that way and yet maintain its incomparable daily-drive character. Just make signs with the following names on a dart board, put a blind fold on, step back and throw a dart and see where it lands :

    1. Bilstein (stiffer = better)
    2. More front camber (more cornering force)
    3. Stiffer sway bar
    4. Gentle and slight front toe out (more direct steering, better turn-in response and "rotation" in corners)

If modding is done with moderation, the car's character remains while becoming much more sporty. For me the experience is tremendous, not just from the driving enjoyment, but learning and understanding the car's behavior from experimenting has changed drastically how I approach this hobby.
    Good luck and have fun!

    Re: My first Porsche

Not sure I'm brave enough to get into any mods to the 911 ... yet (save possibly for a short shifter)! I've got a Porsche warranty until 2011 and, from what I understand, any mod at all (even wipers) invalidates it!

The weather's been mostly rubbish since I got the car so I haven't been able to take any good pics yet, sorry.

As for the M5, I realise now that I didn't take too many photos of it; I actually didn't expect that I'd get rid of it this soon!  But, here's a couple of (very mediocre) shots!  What a beast that car is; the v10 is simply awesome.

Agreed, take time and enjoy your new "baby." There is no point of modding until you identify weakness and many people are happy with the Turbo as is.

I did not know UK has such tough warranty enforcement!
One thing for sure that won't void the warranty is alignment change. When and if you are ready, ask me about "front negative camber" and "gentle front toe out." Smiley It will be a revelation. Smiley
