Schumacher Will Re-Retire After The 2012 Season

I do not necessarily know how I feel about this. I wrote off his 2010 season. The car was atrocious and he could never come to terms with its length. 2011 was accident filled, but showed improvement over 2010. Michael's performance this season qualifying and running perfomance was consistently greater than Nico and often at the tops of the mid-pack runners. On occasion he would place himself in podium contention throughout the race until the car ran out of tire or could not manage the onslaught of developments.

Would have liked to see him give it one more season. Give there is .01% probability that Ferarri will renew Massa's contract, I wonder if Ferrari would have given him a 1-year ride.

When seven-time champion Michael Schumacher announced he would come out of retirement and rejoin Formula One with the Mercedes GP team in 2010, it electrified the sport.

But Schumacher largely has struggled ever since he returned, and Thursday he confirmed what many expected: That the German driver would retire -- again -- after this season.

"I can be happy with my performance and the fact that I was continuously raising my game," Schumacher, 43, said in a statement. "But then, at some point it is time to say goodbye."

That time drew nearer last week, when it was announced that 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton would move from McLaren to Mercedes next year, joining Mercedes' other driver Nico Rosberg and leaving Schumacher without a ride.

Rather than seek another team, Schumacher called it quits after this year.

Schumacher is winless since returning and so far this year he's 12th in the championship standings with only one top-five finish in 14 races. That was in stark contrast to his 91 career victories and seven titles.

It wasn't clear whether Schumacher had lost a step to his younger rivals, or whether Mercedes' cars simply couldn't keep pace with those from McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull. Perhaps it was a little of both.

"I had a lot of criticism in the past three years which partly was justified," said Schumacher, who initially retired in 2006. "We did not achieve our goal to develop a world championship-fighting car."

Formula One's next race is the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday at the Suzuka Circuit track. At a news conference there Thursday, Hamilton, 27, was asked about replacing Schumacher at Mercedes next year.

"I don't think anyone can replace Michael; he's a legend in the sport," Hamilton said, according to a transcript on Formula One's website. "For me to get to race with him has been a real privilege."

He will have more time to go skydiving. But he should work a bit on his landing skills... ;-)

Re: Schumacher Will Re-Retire After The 2012 Season

Schumacher is the all time greatest driver. I wished him on more win but the Mercedes just didn't deliver as promised. He was very good this season, outperforming Nico, but one 3rd isn't enough and he knows it. He wanted to win, that is all that matters. It is also the reason he is retiring.. no more chance at winning. I hope he remains active in F1 and enjoys his life!

Would be great to see Schumacher driving in Le Mans for Porsche in 2014

Unfortunately, it seems he will not... He thinks that Le Mans is too unsafe... Really, i don't understand his return to F1 3 years ago... Really, he spoiled his career a bit. If in 2006 he retired as winner, now he retires as loser IMO. He could try another series... Le Mans, Indy, Nascar, WRC, WTCC, GT...

P.S. He is one of the greatest, but not the greatest...even having most wins in F1. Really hard to say who is greatest... Prost, Senna, Villeneuve, Ickx or even... Nuvolari, Rosemeyer, Donohue, Clarke, Hill, Fangio and etc etc. There are lots of great names. Smiley

If anything, he's the most complete and importantly, the most recent, great driver. Certainly it takes more to win so many races today than it did in 1950 when there were only two cars and rest was handicapped. Add to that todays increased pressures from media and communication as well as much tighter competition and you have a much harder playing field in which to exist. I think Schumacher came on in the right time with the right style and was not only a damn fast driver, he also was able to talk setup with the mechanics.. He built a team around Ferrari and made the car the most successful in F1 history. Sure there were controversies, but that's the sport. Many say no one will ever achieve what Schumi has achieved in his career, but if Vettel takes 3 with RBR he has done better than schumi with Benetton haha. I move to Ferrari could be in the cards, but only it they can build a car again that's not faster driving in reverse... Seriously though, it was a great era and I feel like F1 is turning too strict. We are on the verge of imposing penalties for every spin out etc... it's racing! There will always be crashes and hits.

Re: Schumacher Will Re-Retire After The 2012 Season

Yes, I agree. Its very hard to compare different epohs. But anyway there are lots of things that makes this sport easier and things that make it more complex. Talking about 30-80's there were no lots of electronic devices, no telemetry, different materials, no safety. Can't agree about media. Racedrivers were always under pressure. So was in Nazi gp era (33-39), so was in 70-80's. In 30's must say drivers and teams were "defending" the prestige of manufacturer country, racing was very politic. Today racing has nothing common with country prestige and showing its tech progress. Also, cars were much more interesting. Real flow of fantasy, different approaches to the same things, revolutionary fundamental instruments or devices...

Talking about today... much more strict requirements on fitness, more races, due to strict tech rules much tighter competition, more organism overloads and etc etc....

The greatest racedriver in terms of combination of driving and working with engineers and being engineer - Mark Donohue. Smiley

When he retired he was immensely successful, turned around Ferrari after it not winning for two decades, rich with a beautiful family. Why he came back? Being a smart and successful guy after all this he needed a new challenge, it did not end as he/we hoped nevertheless it does not (Imho) detract to his achievements. I don`t think it is fair to say that he is a looser. He is the best judge of himself.

As for the greatest, in my view are Clark and Senna but then all the pilots you mentioned were outstanding and it is a discussion that could go ahead for years. Defining a great driver can be based on factual achievements and on personal perceptions, based on the first ones , all those guys in their times were great.

Wanting a new challange is understandable. Racing is life, everything that happens before and after- only waiting. Smiley But why not different series? Why not to try to repeat Hill's triple crown? (Le Mans + Monaco + Indianapolis 500)

Re: Schumacher Will Re-Retire After The 2012 Season

Same reason why I think he will continue being an active member in F1 for years to come...

Re: Schumacher Will Re-Retire After The 2012 Season

I think Schumi will remain in F1 in some capacity ... he is commercially too big for teams not to want to exploit his worldwide recognition.

Most people keep his 2 careers separate. He was dominant in the first until Alonso took over with 2 world titles.

In the second, he came back for fun ... he has done OK but not great by his previous standards. Nonetheless, IMO his mediocre 2nd career should not and does not undermine what he did in his 1st stint in F1.

I do so hope that he has at least had some fun. What else is racing really about?

Re: Schumacher Will Re-Retire After The 2012 Season

MS went there for the fun - even his wife pushed him to do so angry

Re: Schumacher Will Re-Retire After The 2012 Season

It was all abut fun and thrill. He missed it so much, that he was looking for that thrill elsewhere. And it almost resulted in loosing hes life or landing in a wheelchair, when he had the motorcycle accident.

So I understand hes wife, F1 is at least safer than starting a Moto GP career in this age.
