    458 Configurator

    I'll have mine in this flavor thank you very much Smiley. i thought it would be nice too see how this car can mold to each of our own personal tastes.

    Grigio Silverstone, with red and nero interior.

    Beautiful. I configured one too but it wasn't as good as yours (by far). I like the many options.

    I noticed the option:

    AFS frontlight system

    Under additional options... Does anyone know what that is?

    Well Iain,

    did you know my 928 was one of the 1st cars equipped with a similiar system. That's right, I have a small dial to the left of the drivers seat that changes the aim of the headlights in steps by some number of degrees, I guess for foggy nights and the headlights themselves are very special and expensive that focus the light beam to cut-off at an angle to not bother on-coming drivers.

    And the only car I know of with an F1 style rain/fog light in the rear that can be turned on independent of other lights.

    Many cars have/had independent rear fog lights, Land Rover and Audi to name a few.

    pardon the hijack, Enmanuel, but I have never noticed 1 of those ^^, any pics, I just looked and could not find 1.

    Well I had a 1998 Audi A4 which had buttons for front and rear fogs. The rear fog is a single white light inside the left or right tail light, can't remember which one. The Land Rover has a similar system. I'm not sure if this is the same as the fogs on the 928.

    As I was expecting, the 458 looks great in dark grey/black. I can't wait to see one in person!

     MY 2003 Cayenne has it. I guess if technology has nothing to do with racing, Ferrari is a decade behind.

    If you regard adaptive lights as important technology, then yes. If you regard hugely powerful engines, state of the art transmissions, advanced aerodynamics, composite materials, race-type suspensions and brakes as technology, then Ferrari is 20 years ahead. ;)

    The 928, along with many German cars of that period, had a vertical headlight aim compensation adjustment; not a horizontal adjustment like AFS or Porsche's cornering lights on 2009 models (or any number of recent cars -- Audi, BMW, etc.)

    The 928 system allowed you to compensate for the load in the car's boot; so if a heavy load was causing the headlight aim to be too high, you could dip the headlights a bit. BTW, this feature was not available on US models due to DOT regulations at the time.

    The only cars I can think of with horizontal headlight aim compensation were the Citroens (driving light swiveled with steering angle) and the Tucker (middle headlight). In these cases, the headlights were linked to steering angle, so they were of limited use at higher speeds, unlike AFS and the systems of today.)

     Don't agree. The color hides the styling of the car. There are many styling cues in the 458 and that is why it looks better with lighter colors highlighting them. Ever see a Lambo in black on the road? I saw one the other day and but for its low profile I would not have known it was a super sport car.

    The only Super sport  car that looks good in black is the Carrera GT. it has few styling cues. Basically it is all about function.

    Still not sure about that "smiling" front end, and black takes care of that problem.

     

    But feel free to get one in Yellow, which makes the 458 the worlds most expensive smileySmiley

    The car is absolutley awesome, but I'm not sure either with that black parts of the front lights. But somehow, its something complete different! Just wondering, why not 100% LEDs, as just the indicators and dailights are to much wanna-be tuning.

    So - I would probably go for a dark color, that does the trick!

    I guess full LED lights are still not ready yet. At least in Italy. Smiley

    The Audi R8 LED lights are manufactured by an italian company belonging to Magneti Marelli (meaning to Fiat). All LED lights are manufactured by the italians actually. Audi is a good customer of theirs. LED headlights still have some issues, most prominent of which is the dazzling effect on the driver due to the high luminosity; in effect they are very powerful but produce a glare that impairs visibility. Ferrari just leaves the beta testing to the germans.
