will GT3 seats mount easily in 997?

the seats look like the same crap as 996. does anyone know if GT3 seats will bolt right in? thanks

Re: will GT3 seats mount easily in 997?

If Autocar is correct, it seems (you and I) won't have to try that Watt, they will have full racing buckets available for the 997. Here is what they said:

I am certain that applies to the ROW market. Not for North American bound cars.

    Carlos,

thanks for the info!!!! we'll have to source those new buckets and install them as i'm sure they'll be illegal andnot stock as radar says!!! that's why i was hoping i could use GT3 seats.

Most likely, you will be able to as the tracks might be the same. We'll have to wait and see.

Sorry, I just realised you guys are right, its only for RoW.
I just remembered the US 997 version has the side airbags integrated in the seats so there will be no factory bucket seats option

Carlos, not sure if the side airbags have anything to do with it. The US government only mandates the front airbags. After all, the 996 had side airbags in the doors. To my knowledge, the non-availability of the GT3 seats in the US is a choice issue on Porsche's part.

Re: will GT3 seats mount easily in 997?

I thought it had to do with DOT regs. The same reason why US cars are "taller" and have orange side markers instead of clear.

Thats what I heard, I think it might of been in one of the preliminary order guide threads: side airbags were in the seats instead of doors now in the 997, so bucket seats not an option. But who knows, the 996 GT3/GT2 have the airbags in the doors and still don't get the bucket seat unlike RoW, I think it was because Porsche didn't bother going thriw the expensive DOT homologation for just the few US GT2's and GT3's.

I wonder why the same DOT regulation did not apply to the Carrera GT seats. Which, essentially, have the same basic shell as the GT3 seats.

Re: will GT3 seats mount easily in 997?

My understanding of the seat situation is that the DOT considers the seat a significant factor in crash safety, and if a substantially different seat is installed, the manufacturer would have to crash test additional cars. The similar seats in the CGT are, I believe, the only option, so that model would have been crashed with them installed.

Also, I believe that the higher USA ride heights are due to Porsches belief that USA consumers have a low level of pain concerning "inconveniences", are inattentive when driving - causing repair & warranty claim concerns when we blindly drive over curbs and such, and our road conditions in various parts of the country, which in Porsches opinion call for more clearance.
If it is a DOT bumper height regulation consideration, how are they able to bring in the GT3 with it's considerably lower ride height intact?

The orange lenses are certainly DOT related, as mentioned.

That said, unless there is an interconnected computer signal showing the airbag is armed that is required for the car to run properly (which there may be), I don't otherwise see why the airbag equipped seats could not be removed and replaced with GT3 seats, assuming you are willing to live with the reduced crash safety. Probably not legal, but in most states you will never be called on it.

Crash safety is not necessarily worse with one-piece shell seats. As you wrote, they have just not been run through the additional crash test program specifically required by US leglislation.

Re: will GT3 seats mount easily in 997?

I was only referring to the abscence of the side air bags re safety, not the seats themselves, but it is possible that it could be just as safe to be snug in your seat w/o the bags.

Re: will GT3 seats mount easily in 997?

Hay I just got back in from Germany, The 997 does have air bags in the seat. The question is can you replace the seat with a GT3 seat or will there be a idiot light on in the dash because the sensor is no longer picking up anything connected to the airbag wire? The friend from Porsche didn't know the answer..

Re: will GT3 seats mount easily in 997?

In DOT terms, there's very little that can change (carpets, maybe...) before they want the revenue from repeated crash tests and paperwork. In the 964, it was not possible to delete electric window winders because of their role in side-impact testing ... madness.
Porsche is too small and sells too few cars to deal with government bureaucrats and red tape.

The Carrera GT is a marvel and the number of new technologies in the car (equal to the Enzo) leave me without any answers for how Porsche can sell the car in the US. From environmental impact issues (use of Magnesium) to crash safety (bumper height, seat and passenger cell testing) and I have no explanation for how they get those wheels through testing -- I guess it's still a stud system, but it's so easily converted to centre-lock, there will surely be C-GT's running in "track" trim on the street and the track exhaust will be awesome even in comparison to the already spine-chilling sound of the street system ... great times ahead for the Porsche wealthy ...
