    Re: Cayman GTS

We collected the car today and it looks fantastic. I'm so glad I ordered Carmine red with the Platinum wheels as the dealer had a Guards red display car with the black option wheel and there was simply no contest between the two. Quite a few other customers came over to see the car and commented on how good the colour looks.

I had a few vulnerable areas covered with 3M film to protect against stone chips and also had a couple of small strips fitted to the inner sill kick panels as these are vulnerable when you have the sport bucket seats. The quality and finish of the interior is fantastic and the GTS interior package was well worth the money IMHO as it simply elevates the interior to another level compared to the full and bi-coloured leather interiors I had in my previous 981 Boxsters. A pleasant surprise was discovering that all the exterior plastic is indeed painted as standard in a satin finish black paint as opposed to being left in bare plastic. This finish looks great against the platinum wheels which are also a matt satin effect.

I haven't driven it as yet but Steph loves it. The Cayman R is being collected tomorrow and we'll be sad to see it go after nearly 3 years of reliable service but the GTS is a very fitting replacement. It looks very low and wide on the road and the X73 sports suspension really gives a lot of added visual drama to the car.

Thanks Stephan Smiley  Steph always loved my Scuderia and the 458 Italias I had which were very similar to this combination so she jumped at the chance to do it on a Cayman. I will try to resist swapping it for a PTS Peridot GT4/Cayman R next year  Smiley

    Re: Cayman GTS

Not usually a fan of dark wheels, but they look great here, perhaps the contrast with the "bright" red.

    Re: Cayman GTS

Hi Iain - your GTS looks amazing. Really glad you advised me to specify the GTS Interior Pack for our Boxster, I would almost certainly not done so without your input and it does indeed make the interior look very special. Carmine red also looks great, and I'm going to have to stop myself changing my order to carmine......Smiley. Bucket seats also impressive, would love to have those but there is no way SWMBO would get on with them. Still, just very happy she found the standard sport seat plus a lot more comfortable than I ever thought she would.

Surprising how the 987 interior looks dated against the 981.

Look forward to hearing your driving - and sound- impressions, always assuming Steph will let you of drive it of course!

Out of interest which areas did you get covered in the protective film other than the inner sill kick panels?

Another perfectly optioned car from your hands Iain wink

981 GTS is such a nice car that it is the best bang for the buck Sports Car in the market right now.

Just curious about height of your car. I lowered my Cayman 16mm when I put Bilstein PSS10 coiloevers. It just looks right but I'm curious if it is lowered more than 16 mm, because only 16 mm cannot make this much of difference on stance. I only worry about scratching the front of the car right now.

    Re: Cayman GTS

    DC,

These are the areas I had covered with the 3M Ventureshield film. Porsche no longer fit any protective film to the 981 models and in my experience (and those of the installer) these are the most vulnerable areas on the car especially the large panel around the side air intakes. The lower quarters of the rear bumper are also prone to stones being thrown up by the wide rear wheels as they taper inwards significantly. The film the factory used for the shark fins they put on the 987 around the side intakes are about twice the thickness of the current film. The old film looks pretty unsightly as a rsult as it tends to discolour over time. The new version is virtually invisible and much more resistant to discolouration which is especially important on a white car. The guy who did it is based in Solihull but travels all over and was in Bristol last Friday. If you want his details let me know. The price was very reasonable IMHO.

    Protection film.JPG

    Onur,

The suspension is the X73 option so the cars sits 20mm lower than the standard ride height. Front end clearance looks to be fine as there is a fairly raked angle to the underside of the front bumper as there is on the 458. It is certainly no lower than the Cayman R and I've never had an issue with that car.

    Re: Cayman GTS

That car looks totally amazing Iain, great colour and classy accessories!

One question though was interested in your choice of seats, but seeing that you have the same ones in the R guess they are fine for long and short trips?

    Re: Cayman GTS

The seats are really supportive on longer journeys. They take a bit of getting used to at first as they make you sit more upright but once you get familiarised with them they are hard not to spec. I have a small Sparco back rest support pad that I sometimes use on longer journeys to give additional lumbar comfort that you just slide in place behind the small of your back.

Thanks Iain much appreciated, yes please if you could let me know your man's contact info I would be very grateful (obviousy no panic as the car is a frustrating 6 months away)  - surprised he didn't recommend protection on the front panel / spoiler? My first silver Boxster looked shotblasted there after two years, I had 3M film on the blue Boxster on the front,  wings and bonnet but only half way which left an unsightly line where the film ended - I guess technology has moved on in 6 years. I didn't put film on the 997 but strangely that car had very little FOD.

    Re: Cayman GTS

My Cayman is badly chipped all over the bonnet and front bumper.  The leading edge of the roof isn't great and rear wings have been chipped a little where they stick up and out.  The areas behind the wheel arches are not chipped at all

    Re: Cayman GTS

The film applied to the front bumper and bonnet is a costly exercise. I used to have it done but gave up as the film discolours from bug splatter and the surface marks from it leaving small patches that stand out. The manufacturers claims that the yellow or red dye stains from insects will bleach out if the car is left in natural sunlight for up to 3 weeks. That's fine if you live in southern Spain or the US sunshine states etc but not much use in the UK smiley

I can live with a few stone chips on the front bumper or bonnet as they can be successfully touched in and made to be relatively hidden. Looking after the film so that it continues to look good is a real PIA on the front end. I could also get two very good bumper repaints done for the cost of a front end film protection kit.

Film applied to the sides does not take much insect damage so stays looking good far longer without any special after care techniques. It also protects the area on the car that really are vulnerable to road rash that you see very time you wash the car.

I've had 7 various 987 models across Boxster and Cayman and all of them suffered considerable rash in the red area highlighted on this photo. I'd be amazed if your car is completely undamaged there. The moulding is very wide at this point on the 987 but is much smaller on the 981. I've had odd chips on the bumper, bonnet and roof but the problem is where do you draw the line with protective film. You can cover the whole car but the film is harder to look after than paint, does not polish up anything like as well despite stories to the contrary on the net and also suffers damage itself and can be penetrated if the object is large or sharp enough.

    Stonechip.JPG

    Re: Cayman GTS

Ah, there are a few chips there but not that many.  The diagram made it look further back along the wing and most of my damage has been caused by other vehicles throwing up stones on the motorway.  I thought about a film for the front of mine but decided a couple of resprays were money better spent.  One is due now!

Strangely, it seems, I've had no FOD whatsoever on my 997 GTS over the past three and a half years!! Smiley

I've never used film of any type, but do drive very slowly on newly chipped road surfaces.  Perhaps I've just been lucky..Smiley
