    Boxster Turbo or RS?

And here we go again: one of our Users, I know this guy personally, states that he recently saw "by mistake" a turbo charged Boxster engine. Of course he didn't see it lying on the street...

So this might feed again the rumor of a more powerful Boxster model but of course it can't be excluded that this engine was an experimental engine for a prototype only. Porsche tests a lot of different engines/setups, so this doesn't really have to be an engine which goes into regular production.
He also told me that he heard that a Boxster Turbo or RS might produce around 315 HP, maybe up to 320 HP.
This should be more than enough to cope with the new upcoming SLK 55 AMG.
The rumored Boxster Turbo or RS is said to have PASM, Bi-Xenon, 19'' wheels with wider rear tires (275s or 285s) as standard.

Again: this is just a rumor, nothing confirmed. And as I don't have even the slightest official information about such a project, I suppose it might take at least two to thre years until we see a final product. If ever.

    Re: Boxster Turbo or RS?

Normaly when you start a rumor there is something going on!!!!!

    Re: Boxster Turbo or RS?

what's 2 to 3 years? As long as they make it! :bounce:

    Re: Boxster Turbo or RS?

    i'll buy one!!

hope you are right RC, a boxster RS coupe would be a dream!

    Re: Boxster Turbo or RS?

RC, I believe some years ago, maybe in 2000, you stated that you have heard while in a visit to a ciruit a Boxster testing with a turbo charger engine, at least you said that the waste gate valve noise was very audible. I believe it was you or someone that you know personaly, not sure.

So there might be indeed some turbo charger engines testing on a Boxster for a long time.

    Re: Boxster Turbo or RS?

I just find it ridiculous to install a turbo-engine in the Boxster, since packaging and turbo-typical downsides like gasmileage, heat and response won't be on par with a decent n/a-engine!

Since the M096-type engine still has some development potential I would find it ridiculous to think about a different variant of power enhancement than increasing cylinder size!

    Greetings!

I agree...and not. For the extra power (and of course extra money... ), they have to offer something "special".
Just increasing the displacement to 3.6...this would actually mean they install a 911 engine to the Boxster, nothing really spectacular. But a Boxster Turbo will be something special, it will remind many people of the 911 Turbo and it might sell better. I know...a lot of speculation, the only thing I heard for sure is that there will be indeed a third engine variant and I truely hope it won't be a Diesel.

    Re: Boxster Turbo or RS?

So would this be the Paris Show surprise you were talking about?

    Re: Boxster Turbo or RS?

A Boxster RS coupe with a detuned GT3 motor and an 8000 rpm redline would be more in character for such a car than a turbo motor , IMO , but I guess the cost factor and it's effect on 997 C2 coupe sales would prohibit that .

Or how about a GT3 motor with smaller displacement (3.2L?) and higher revlimit (8,500rpm?) with ~ 340hp

    Re: Boxster Turbo or RS?

Do you really think Porsche would give a Boxster 315 HP so it could drive circles around a 911?

If it is turbo charged with lots of nice options, it will cost around the range of a base 997 carrera (not S). I think they will do a high end Boxster, that would cost over 70k. A well equiped S is around 60k. So yeah they'll do it. As far as driving circles around the 911, I think it will be too different of a car. In some aspects it may be better, maybe. But in others the 911 will be. It will come down to two different feeling cars, close to the same price range. One is fully loaded, the other stripped to the basics. Even then, a basic 911 Carrera aint to bad a car to be in. Just my thoughts.

    Re: Boxster Turbo or RS?

Going Turbo for only 315-320HP? if they turbocharge it it will easily achieve excess of 350HP with no extra efforts, and going from 280HP of the S version to only 320HP at the expese of turbo-lag, milage, costs of turbocharging on the pricetag, etc. doesn't look like a good idea in my opinion.

So if its 315-320HP its probably a tunned N/A version like an RS version, since that can be achieved w/o turbocharging. And if its a turbocharged version then most likely its going to be more HP than that, besides, can the Boxster engine withstand turbocharging?

Personally I would like... no.... I would LOVE to see a 987 Boxster Coupe RS with the engine of the 997GT3 (which fits), similar suspension & brake setup of the GT3RS, heavy aerodinamic work like the GT3RS (unseen on the Boxster), PCCB's, rear 40/60 LSD, optional sequential gearbox, and a RS weight saving treatment. Would have Lambo and Ferrari shaking at the sight of this "little" silver painted 1200kg, N/A F-6 400HP track tunned Boxster! and you know customers would just take them of Porsche hands

    Re: Boxster Turbo or RS?

Guys, you start dreaming. Porsche would never put the 911 in danger. The 911 is THE Porsche, the Boxster "just" the entry-level model. Sad but true, get used to it. Just in case some of you guys start dreaming of a "little" CGT.

How about a "limited" coupe RS version then?

How about this turbo for the Boxster? do you think it will fit?

Just can't keep my mouth shut...

    Re: Boxster Turbo or RS?

OK, I don't have any contacts at Porsche, and pretty much everything I know about the Boxster I read here. But Porsche's strategy in product development is quite clear from their behavior with recent product releases (from the 996 facelift, MkII GT3, 997 and 997S etc). As RC says, Porsche will not endanger the 911 or its superior per unit profit margin with a Boxster that has performance even equal to the non-S 997. However, I am fairly certain that if Porsche thinks that there is a market for a higher performance (and hence higher profit margin) version of the Boxster that will not jeopardize even the base 997, they will consider building it. That being said, Porsche would build it with the least expensive components available to them that would meet their customers' perceived need for quality, etc.

What am I trying to say? If there is a third Bozster engine variant it will probably be one of two things, a more highly tuned 3.2L, or the pre-facelift 996 3.4L. Why these? They would be the least expensive for Porsche to implement at a power ouput that would not directly compete with the 997.

How much power should we expect in such a model? Regardless of what rennteam members know to be true about car performance stats, 0-60 and total hp figures are powerful marketing tools. Porsche claims a 4.8s 0-60 time for the 320hp 997, and a 4.9s (from the www site I saw, correct me if this is wrong) time for the 296hp 2000 3.4L 996. Given the boxster's slight weight advantage, 295-300hp would be enough for an RS model Boxster to be close to, but not quite better than, the base 997. Add on the other options RC mentioned (PASM, BiXe, 19, etc) and you are probably looking at a US$65K price point, just below the 997.

Allright, these are just my *speculations*. I would love to hear what any of you think, so please comment.

By the way, Ruf (I know some of you don't care for Alois Ruf) has built such cars, the 3400S and 3600S. The most powerful being the 3600S which is essentially a Boxster with the 996 powerkit engine. He has an atricle on his www site in pdf format from Excellence if any of you care to read it.

    Please comment!

Yep, a Boxster should easily fit into that turbo!

    Re: Boxster Turbo or RS?

    Nice !!!!

Any idea if this "rumour" will be available in the two models (Boxster and Coupe) or only one ?...

A Boxster with 320+ HP would be a dream......... a nightmare for the 911, whitch is a more "statutary" car.... Boxster more "wanabe" car... anyway give me both, I'll do my duty choosing one

I don't know. We carry so much gossip and rumors together from many different sources, sometimes it is very difficult to find some truth in them.
Take the Boxster Coupe for example: some sources indicate a price tag below the Roadster, others above the Roadster.
I would lie if I'd say which one is true.
