Okay collect yourself, could be camshaft seal.
BUT Put daily sheets of large paper under car and count the amount and number of leaks, get a decent idea of how bad it is. You can go for quite some time w/o fixing.
Go to PPBB.com and learn alot there too about RMS (on boxsters but they're all the same)
Watch your non-dipstick.
When the time is right pick the best service dept, not all dealers have "the best" service.
It's a lottery and you may have missed the correct numbers.

Oh, one more thing. If when you put all those sheets of clean large paper under the leak, there may be days (after a drive) when there's no dripping at all. THAT means, to my amateur way of thinking, that the leak isn't really bad. I.e. repair, though eventually required is not urgent.

With all RMS leaks eventually the oil will contaminate the clutch plates. Like drops of oil on brake pads This will eventually be very bad. So PLAN on having it replaced. sooner the better but no great hurry. service guys will have to check the clutch and replace it if it's got oil on it. Either way you don't pay. See? All you will suffer is decreased performance. You won't have to pay for a new clutch plate because it was damaged by the faulty seal that's all covered under warrenty. That's how I understand it.
better to get it done at your earliest convenience.

Thanks MMD, especially about the clutch plate advice! PPBB.com is a great site, too. I parked the car nose out in the garage yesterday, and no oil on the floor. I'm going to make an appointment on Monday with Porsche of Arlington (I have great confidence in their ability). I really appreciate the advice/sanity check.
The funny thing is that yesterday I was having second thoughts about hitting the sport button on the way home (for Washington, DC locals on Accokeek Road). I want to get this problem fixed quickly.

Exactly and since most of us have another 18 months at least (a guess before I get shot down in flames) just enjoy the car. If it breaks bring it back, enjoy a complimentary coffee, gas about cars with the salesman, say thankyou when it is fixed and leave the showroom nailing it as hard as you can for the next xxx miles.

dont worry,
you are not alone. actually for a while i started to think the oil leak might be a common problem among all 997(i saw 3 of them in turkey). my 997s has 7000km on it. and right on the surface of the gearbox(buttom site,where the gearbox connects to the engine) i can see the weak oil leak. the guys in the service told me that the oil comes from the seals(felt) of the gearbox and they need to take most of the parts out of the car and replace the neccessary items from warranty. but it is not that urgent according to them so i decided to complete the repairment after 15k km. good luck to you too

Is this an issue with the 3.8L "S" engine, or has it also happened with the 3.6L?
