Hardtop pro's and con's - and cautionary tale!

Just been moving house, so had to put the hard-top back on to transport it. Bad move! Now have a scratch to fix...

Advice to anyone else with the hard top:
    a) Make sure you have someone strong enough with you, and that knows how exactly the hard top locates, and the risks involved.
    b) Don't rush. Don't try to do it when it's bad weather. Don't do it when you're tired.
    c) Try to find some way to protect the paintwork by the location holes before you start - I'd suggest leather swatch samples or something like that. The location spikes are pretty vicious.

Plus points of the hard top:

It looks better (in my opinion) than the soft roof, when up.
It's more secure against knife attack/vandalism.
The rear screen provides a wider field of view than the soft top.
It'll be easier to keep clean and salt-free in winter - I hope!

    Minus points:

It's pretty hard to locate it so it doesn't rattle. Or maybe I'm just not doing it right.
You need two people to get it on and off.
Rain runs straight off the roof and down inside the car when you open the door. I know the soft-top does it as well, but the hard-top does it worse and more copiously.

Would I order a hard-top again?... I'll let you know come winter! I'd be happier if I could locate it so it doesn't rattle.

Re: Hardtop pro's and con's - and cautionary tale!

Some time after I ordered my 987 without a hard top I had second thoughts and enquired from Porsche in Reading whether it was too late to add a hardtop to the order, how much etc, and the salesman actually talked me out of it - which must be the first time a Porsche salesman has tried to save a customer money!

So far I haven't regretted not having the hard top, and I have to say the sound insulation is much better than I was expecting, but I suspect winter will truly tell whether that was a smart decision, even though it is not going to be my daily driver.

Re: Hardtop pro's and con's - and cautionary tale!

Well, you're welcome to borrow mine if you want to try out!
At least it'll match your car, unlike Dreamcar's.

What was the sales guy's main reason for not getting the hard top, out of interest?

I'll see you at the meet, anyway.

Re: Hardtop pro's and con's - and cautionary tale!

too bad about the scratch wtsnet... Good Luck

Re: Hardtop pro's and con's - and cautionary tale!

After the 2002 face-lift on the Boxster you don't need a hardtop unless you park your car outside overnight. I had a hardtop on my first '96 Boxster.

Re: Hardtop pro's and con's - and cautionary tale!

It's parked outside ALL the time. Getting the scratch looked at today. Trying 'Chips Away' first to see what they make of it. Want to try to preserve as much factory paint as possible!

Oh, and add to the list of cons that you can damage the seals around the leading edge if you rest the top horizontally on the floor. So ideally, you need the stand as well. PoundsPoundsPounds!

Re: Hardtop pro's and con's - and cautionary tale!

Could try to hang it from the ceiling in a storage room.

Re: Hardtop pro's and con's - and cautionary tale!

Ceiling might be tough - just moved to a 300+ year old thatched cottage. There's only about 6'5" headroom as it is!
My plan is to store it outside under cover, and in it's sleeping bag and a tarpaulin. Bit worried it'll get sweaty under there though. Not enough room in the shed for it at the moment. What a pain!

Damage would be A Pounds40 touch-in job from Chips Away, but he reckoned it'd be a 60% fix, and said I could probably do it myself just as well. Fortunately it's not down to the metal.

Any tips for DIY touching in? I've got a couple of fine art brushes. RichC? Any prep of the wound required?

Re: Hardtop pro's and con's - and cautionary tale!

Little and often is the mantra...

Make sure the wound is clean

Make sure your paint is warm - I leave the touchup stick ona radiator for a while - although with the weather we've got air temp will probably be fine.

Use a cocktail stick or fine art brush (brush is prob beter if its a scratch rather than a chip) to apply a VERY small amount of paint at a time - for a better match some suggest mixing 50% clearcoat; 50% paint before application to obtain a better match. This worked well on my Seal Grey as 'pure' touch-up looked a bit dark.

I use a hair dryer to then warm the paint to help it flow into the chip better. Make sure you let it fully dry between 'coats'

I've had mixed results with Langka (www.langka.com) taking off any build up - although the results have never been worse than without it - just varying degrees of success

Re: Hardtop pro's and con's - and cautionary tale!

Thanks Rich. What do you use to clean it? Langka stuff?

Re: Hardtop pro's and con's - and cautionary tale!

Just a normal wash and a wipe - unless you've some burred metal that's all you need....

Been doing a few practice runs over the last couple of days. Typical, now the weather has changed. However I'm having a hell of a job matching colour - the touchup colour coat supplied with the car is a little dark as you say, however when mixing it with the clearcoat it coagulates into a gooey mess. So that's a no-go. Best I can thin it down a little with thinner (very slightly), but then the finish goes to pot.

    I could
    a) Mix it with some Arctic, but that might require a better mix-up than I can do with a brush.
    b) Swallow my pride, and get Chips away to do it (just touch the scratch, not spray the whole area), and accept whatever quality they can get it to.

FYI, the scratch is approx 10-12mm long and about 1-2mm wide, and down to the primer, so I'm told. (If so, the primer is black, which seems odd). I'll post a pic in a second.

Any thoughts on option a) or b) above? Perhaps I should have got a plain red one like Boothy!

Closeup. Best focus I could get without faffing.

I don't understand why you would want to vandalise your pride and joy with a 5p coin, though
