A Lotus Elise is far more fun than a 997: you can have fun with it at safe speeds, steering is way better, circuit you can push it far more without too much fear, and most importantly, whatever you do it costs far less.
On the other hand, it is like the time you want to get married, only the Porsche will stand the test of time!

The one thing you may have going for you is that the cars are so different. But as jlr alluded to, the Elise really has to be in its element to have maximum fun. I'm able to take multiple hour trips in the car, but young people tend to be crazy that way.

I know it!
I had one for a while when the 993 was in production, and really liked it. For practical reasons, I need a "new" car for everyday use (Nav system, handsfree phone, etc..), currently a 996, but an aircooled 993 would be an appealing leisure-time distraction.
