    oil service

heyyy guys. when should i make my first oil change on my 997s. it has been 7000km and the service insists to change it not before 15000km what do you thinkkkk about this ?

    Re: oil service

It's only money, so if an oil change might be of value (the main arguement would be to remove so called "break-in contaminants"), why not?

I decided to do one at around 5000km, and all the rest will be at recommended intervals.

There might be value in changing the oil before storage as well . . .

    Re: oil service

I decided to do mine at 7000 miles, and 1)the oil was near empty and 2)it was filthy. Glad I did it, and it was actually extremely easy to do yourself.

    Re: oil service

you tell me that it is very easy to do it yourself. but how are you going to change the filter.. and i dont understand why you did not have any oil left at only 7000 miles??

I'm guessing that what Red Blur meant was, that his oil level was on the bottom marker on the display gauge.
    Right, Red Blur?

I agree. The car starts with nearly 10 quarts/9 liters of oil. That's alot of burnt oil in that # of miles.

By coincidence, I just got off the phone with the local Porsche mechanic re. changing the oil and filter during the "break-in." He was adamant that there is no basis for this per routine during the break-in and states the issue of metal "fragments" from the metal engine components "grinding" together for the first time is not an issue with the coating used on the engine parts of modern Porsche engines (at least for the 996TS, I assume it's similar for the 997), and that the rings set with normal engine revs to the redline without by-products contaminating the oil. He says to stick to the maintenance schedule (within 2 years or 15K miles, whichever comes first), with regular oil level checks at each fuel filling to ensure oil consumption is not high (for instance if one does alot of high-intensity driving in dusty, humid, hot conditions) or once a year if desired. Of course it wouldn't HARM the engine to change the oil and filter, but would it help? Does anyone have a different opinion re. this?

Exactly. Maybe I should of stated it differently. But the oil marker was down to the bottom (so not empty) and it was dirty...very black.

Changing the oil filter was extremely easy. Do a search and you can find some step by step instructions from others who have changed it themselves.

    Re: oil service

I will change mine as soon as it hits 2000 miles.
