CAR says its a "radical" change. coming after 2006. and the 997 is the iterim car. what do you thimnk will happen porsche will replace the 911 rear engine and make it mid engine with a v8 OR porsche will make a car above the 911 with a mid engine v8 and still keep the 911 with rear flat 6(now at max 4.0l) to satisfy everyone? what does everyone think?
Houston...we have a problem.
Can CAR answer one question?
The question is: who says that the 998 has to be a 911?
Or better asked: who says that the next generation 911 will be a 998?
The new 997 is the new 911. Period. The upcoming GT3, Turbo, etc. will be based on this car, at least regarding a flat six engine (even if it is a "different" engine), base looks, etc.
I don't know why there is so much speculation about a 998 right now. We reported on Rennteam.com last year that the 997 won't get a radical design change, we also reported that the power upgrade will be pretty moderate.
But it seems that a lot of people still expected more and I really don't understand why.
The 997 Carrera is a base model. If people wish something more powerful and sporty, there is the 997 S. If the 997 S isn't enough, there will be a 997 GT3 and even a 997 Turbo and maybe even a GT2 and/or GT1.
So I really don't understand what all the fuzz is all about?
The 911 is NOT Porsche's top performance car, the 911 is just a very traditional car, a product a lot of people feel attached to from generation to generation.
Now back to the 998: Porsche does NOT build a completely new body to replace it in two years, this is BS. There is no such thing as an interim 911, this is BS too.
It seems that a lot of people are disappointed with the 997 but surprisingly mainly non-Porsche owners or people who own a 996 and who wouldn't go for the 997 now anyway.
Why don't you guys just wait until the 997 really shows up in dealer showrooms? I recommend the same to car magazines who reported a lot of BS over the past few months about 997 specs and power figures.
Yes, Porsche has a lot of new products in the planning over the next 10 years and some of these products might be even called "radical". But the 911 is the 911 and adding a V8 or even V10 to it will only happen if the 911 starts to sell very very slow over the next years. And the question would be: would a 911 with a V8 or V10 still be a 911 or wouldn't it be better to create a new model or even abandon the 911?
2007 was rumored to be the year of the 997 Turbo, maybe it will be 2006 as some rumors indicate. But whoever expects a new 911 by 2007 should get a serious brain check.
And a last word: car magazines need sensations. I sometimes read a very sensational title on the front page and when I buy the magazine and read the article inside the magazine, it usually doesn't say anything, just a mix of speculation, rumors and wishful thinking. "Sex and crime sells", you should know that this is the rule number one for magazines who want to be succesful.
