How do you know if a 997 has X51?

It's very easy to notice if a 997 has PSE (by observing the diameter of the outer pipes). However, how can one tell if the car has an X51 power kit?

Is there an external visual indicator?

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

AFAIK, the 3rd air intake in the centre of the front apron/spoiler is operational and I think (although I could be mistaken) that the colour of the mesh inside it is a slightly different colour from the innards of the centre air intake on a 997S without X51 whose centre air intake is cosmetic only.

Obviously once you lift up the engine cover, you'll see a whole range of differences....

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

Tiptronic has third radiator too but only X51 has carbon airbox and 2 intakes

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

From the replies above it seems impossible to identify X51 for certain from a distant glance. Am I right?

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

If it's a tiptronic with PSE you can only tell by the noise of the engine on gearchangee. Unless you lift the engine cover or look in the window at the shift lever it's difficult.

So you are right-unless someone else knows more.....

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

If Porsche owners were like Corvette owners, there would be a brisk business in aftermarket big gawdy ridiculous "X51" emblems that most owners would slap on the fenders and hind-end of their cars if so-equipped......and even if they were not X51 equipped, there would be many who would badge their car up as a poser!!!

P.S. I haven't gotten a good Corvette-people "dig" in for along time..... I feel better now, that'll do me for another few months..., over the last weekend I went to Chilis, and the local 'Vette club was meeting there, and every late-model Vette in the parking lot was festooned in more cheesy aftermarket tack-on gee-gaw J.C. Whitney crrrrap than you could shake a good-taste-stick at.

P.S.S. Sorry for hijacking the thread!!!

Same applies to BMW drivers with the M emblems everrrrrywhere.... even if they drive a 318ti hatchback

I agree with you....but I remember when Porsche offered garish "911" decals for the hood and large "Turbo" script for the sides....

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

I actually kinda like the old "Turbo" fade graphics that came on the cars from the factory on the '76 Turbo Carrera. But then again, I have a nostalgic affinity for those cars as that was my first experience behind the wheel of a 911. Not to mention that the particular car in question was packing an ex-24-hours-of-Daytona 934 race mill, was running adjustable boost that was dialed up to "lunacy" (or "11" if we have any Spinal tap fans here), and would just about lift the front wheels off the ground under full-steam..... Funny that one of the strongest accelerating cars I've ever driven in my life, I drove when I was only 16..

I liked those along with the turbo sticker on the fender. They looked fantastic back in the day I suppose.

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

that's not fair about the BMW's. Agree completely w/ the vette thread though.

so how is it not fair about BMW's but it is for the Vette's?

No offense - but what else would you expect at a Chilis? Seems fitting....
Couldn't resist a bit of snobbery

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

Hey, I like Chilis!! Good salsa, and the lettuce wraps rock. My only gripe is the lousy selection of only watery american light beers on tap.

(You know that the 997 has been out for awhile when threads start wandering off into chrome-plated Corvette accessories and critiquing chain restaurants....)

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

BTW, BMW is guilty of their own gratuitous badging by tossing M logo'd gear into non-M cars, like the shift knobs.

Yes... and also AMG "packages" + logos on a bunch of Mercedes models...

    "What a CLK320 AMG"?

    Um, no.

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

The absolute worst, I think, is Ferrari. Even the owners feel they must advertise their purchasing power....haven't you noticed on the group drives? It is always easy to pick out the F owners.

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

The only ones that stand out to me really are the ones with the Ferrari jackets

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

You can always get the X51 SPINNERs - hub cap option. Snaps on over standard Carrera S wheels. (Do it yourself or dealer charges $125 a rim). They come with the "X51" in ALUMINUM look, ICE look or SEMI PRECIOUS look

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

When his Carrera S car 'walks' away from you eventhough you have already floored your Carrera S

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

porsche uses very large decals for its gt3 rs but for one reason or another some see it as tastetful...hmmm

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

am wondering if X51 & tiptronic options are mutually exclusive (since both X51 & tiptronic require the 3rd center radiator)?

Re: How do you know if a 997 has X51?

If I had the X-51 option I would definitely not advertise it.. let the engine to the talking.. there's no need for any more badges on the car IMO.
