On Friday evening, George (function_analysi) took me for a long drive in his 997.1 GT3. OMG!!
WHAT A CAR!!
Carrara White with black GT3 wheels, PCCBs, Carrera GT lightweight bucket seats, rollcage, side skirt GT3 stickers, red seat belts... this was one serious piece of machinery
George got plenty of admiring thumbs up and compliments. It's not a subtle car - it attracts plenty of attention - and for good reason!
From his hotel, we drove along the Embankment to the Houses of Parliament, from Parliament Square via The Mall past Buckingham Palace, via Hyde Park Corner and Park Lane onto the A40 heading west past Hangar Lane Gyratory system towards Heathrow Airport.
I don't want to steal George's thunder - no doubt he will post a much, much more detailed report on his trip, the aftermarket installations on his car and his impressions plus, naturally, plenty of photos...
His car feels alive. It has an abundance of character. The new aftermarket exhaust that George has had installed created a wall of sound making the car sound and feel like a racing car for the road. It was a 'full on' aural experience that was overwhelming and overpowering. Hours later that night, I could still hear it in my ears!
The aftermarket suspension system that George has had installed is simply incredible. It ensures that there is almost no perceptible body roll but nonetheless it provides admirable ride comfort on London's bad quality road surfaces. It was noticeably more comfortable than my own OEM P17 -20mm sports suspension with rear LSD
At this point, George handed me the keys. My first drive in a 997.1 GT3. WOW!!
What an experience!
It was also the first time I was driving a LHD manual car so I was very careful and stayed well within my limits. (Incidentally, I noticed the pedal position in a LHD car is much more to the right since the left footwell is narrower than the right footwell. In RHD cars, the driver gets the wider right footwell). The acceleration was blisteringly quick. Throttle response was simply instantaneous. The gearbox wonderfully precise and crisp without the awkward notchiness of the regular sport shifter. The PCCBs literally felt like being stopped 'by the hand of God'. Such great brake feel with such precision. The clutch pedal was heavier but not overly so. Steering feel and feedback were wonderful - about the same as on my own -20mm car. Driving along, it felt like all the other cars on the road were stationary obstacles to get past or drive around...
Those are just a few brief observations. Like I said, I don't want to steal George's thunder. No doubt, he will share his much more focussed impressions with us in more detail.
Arriving back at George's hotel, we then went for a smaller loop drive in my -20mm sports suspension 997.1 C2S. It felt like an altogether different car giving a profoundly different experience to the driver. For the first time, when driving my own car, I noticed a tiny amount of body roll having experienced zero body roll in George's 997.1 GT3. As I remarked to George, I went for a sporty C2S when choosing my 'performance' options but with a comfortable, luxurious interior. To this day, I have no regrets over any of my choices. Amusingly, some tourist snapped a photo of my car when I was thinking they should have been doing that to George's beast... how funny!
In a 997.1 GT3, no drive is ever mundane. It is always an event and an experience that assaults all the senses. It makes one feel alive, exhilarated and very much present 'in the moment'.
By contrast, in a 997.1 C2S, how you drive it determines whether it is an absolute blast or a gentle cruise.
This was a great taste of what a 997.1 GT3 is like.
I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to George for trusting me with his car and letting me have a taste of the pleasure it can give
He's a true Porsche enthusiast, a great guy and a gentleman.
Many congratulations once again on such an outstanding car
It's a rare jewel
Now, I intend to pursue PDEs in Silverstone or Leipzig to hone my skills further. It was just the catalyst I needed...
