    OFFICIAL: Porsche 911 (992) GT3 RS - 2022

The new Porsche 911 GT3 RS makes no secret of its intentions: it is uncompromisingly designed for maximum performance. The 386 kW (525 PS) road-legal high-performance sports car takes full advantage of technology and concepts from motorsport. Even beyond the high-revving naturally aspirated engine with racing DNA and intelligent lightweight construction, it is, above all, the cooling and aerodynamic systems of the 911 GT3 RS that connect it most directly with its motorsport brother, the 911 GT3 R.

Central-radiator concept inspired by motorsport – the foundation for active aerodynamics
The basis for a significant performance boost is the concept of a central radiator – an idea that was first used in the Le Mans class-winning 911 RSR and subsequently in the 911 GT3 R. Instead of the three-radiator layout seen in previous cars, the new 911 GT3 RS relies on a large, angled centre radiator in the car’s nose, positioned where the luggage compartment is located on other 911 models. This has made it possible to use the space freed up on the sides to integrate active aerodynamic elements. Continuously adjustable wing elements in the front and on the two-part rear wing, in combination with a number of other aerodynamic measures, provide 409 kg of total downforce at 200 km/h. This means that the new 911 GT3 RS generates twice as much downforce as its 991.2-generation predecessor and three times as much as a current 911 GT3. At 285 km/h, total downforce is 860 kg.

A drag reduction system (DRS) is fitted in a production Porsche for the first time. To achieve low drag and higher speeds on straight sections of the track, the DRS allows the wings to be flattened out at the push of a button, within a specific operating range. The airbrake function is activated during emergency braking at high speeds: the wing elements at the front and rear are set to maximum, creating an aerodynamic deceleration effect that significantly supports the wheel brakes.

The look of the new 911 GT3 RS is characterised by the large number of functional aerodynamic elements. The most prominent feature of the GT sports car is the swan-neck-supported rear wing, which is significantly larger in all dimensions. The rear wing consists of a fixed main wing and an upper, hydraulically adjustable wing element. For the first time on a Porsche production vehicle, the upper edge of the rear wing is higher than the car’s roof. In addition, the front end of the 911 GT3 RS no longer has a front spoiler, but instead features a front splitter that divides the air flowing over and underneath. Sideblades accurately direct air outwards. Front wheel arch ventilation is provided via louvred openings in the front wings. Inlets behind the front wheels, in the style of the iconic Le Mans-winning 911 GT1, reduce the dynamic pressure in the wheel arches. Sideblades behind the intake ensure that the air is directed to the side of the vehicle. Air from the centrally positioned radiator flows out via large nostrils on the front lid. Fins on the roof direct the air outwards, ensuring cooler intake temperatures in the rear. In the new 911 GT3 RS, the openings in the rear side panel are used exclusively to improve aerodynamics and not to draw in process air. The rear wheel arch also features an intake and a sideblade for optimised airflow. The rear diffuser comes from the 911 GT3 and has been slightly adapted.

Track suspension that can be adjusted from the cockpit
Even the suspension comes in for aerodynamic attention. Because the wheel arches of the new 911 GT3 RS are subject to powerful airflows, the components of the double-wishbone front axle are designed with teardrop-shaped profiles. These aerodynamically efficient links increase downforce on the front axle by around 40 kg at top speed and are otherwise only used in high-end motorsport applications. Because of the wider track (29 millimetres wider than the 911 GT3), the double-wishbone front axle links are also correspondingly longer.

To ensure that the downforce balance between the front and rear axles is maintained even when braking from high speeds, the suspension engineers have significantly reduced pitching under braking. On the new 911 GT3 RS, the front ball joint of the lower trailing arm has been set lower on the front axle. The multi-link rear axle has also been adjusted, with modified spring rates. The driver assistance systems and rear-axle steering also have an even more dynamic set-up here.

The 911 GT3 RS offers three driving modes: Normal, Sport and Track. In Track mode, the basic settings can be individually adjusted. Among other settings, the rebound and compression damping of the front and rear axles can be adjusted separately and in several stages. The rear differential can also be adjusted via rotary controls on the steering wheel. This is done quickly and intuitively with an operating and display concept also borrowed from motorsport: Four individual rotary controls and a button for the Drag Reduction System (DRS) are located on the steering wheel. These rotary controls are clearly displayed via graphics in the instrument cluster during the adjustment process. The 911 GT3 RS also features the track screen already familiar from the 911 GT3. At the touch of a button, the driver can reduce the digital displays on the two seven-inch side displays to essential information only. The gearshift indicators to the left and right of the analogue tachometer have also been taken from the GT3.

High-revving four liter six-cylinder boxer engine
The 4.0-litre high-revving naturally aspirated engine has been further optimised compared with the 911 GT3. The increase in power to 386 kW (525 PS) is achieved primarily via new camshafts with modified cam profiles. The single-throttle intake system and the rigid valve drive are derived from motorsport. The seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) has a shorter overall gear ratio than the 911 GT3. Air intakes on the underbody ensure that the transmission can withstand even extreme loads during frequent use on track. The 911 GT3 RS accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 296 km/h in seventh gear. Aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes with six pistons each and brake discs with a diameter of 408 mm are used on the front axle. Compared with the 911 GT3, the piston diameters have been increased from 30 to 32 mm. In addition, the thickness of the discs has been increased from 34 to 36 mm. The rear axle continues to be fitted with 380-mm brake discs and four-piston fixed-calliper brakes. The optionally available Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) has 410-mm discs on the front axle and 390-mm discs on the rear axle. The new 911 GT3 RS comes standard with forged light-alloy centre-lock wheels. Road-legal sports tyres measuring 275/35 R 20 at the front and 335/30 R21 at the rear ensure a high level of mechanical grip.

    Lightweight construction all the way
Intelligent lightweight construction has been a basic principle of all RS models ever since the legendary 911 Carrera RS 2.7. Thanks to an array of lightweight construction measures such as the extensive use of CFRP, the 911 GT3 RS weighs in at only 1,450 kg (kerb weight according to DIN) despite many larger components. The doors, front wings, roof and front lid, for example, are made from CFRP. Lightweight CFRP is also used in the interior, for example in the standard full bucket seats.

Available with Clubsport and Weissach packages
When it comes to its interior, the new GT sports car is finished in typical RS style: black leather, Racetex and carbon-weave finish characterise the purist, sporting ambience. The 911 GT3 RS is available with the Clubsport package at no extra cost. This includes a steel rollover bar, a hand-held fire extinguisher and six-point seat belts for the driver. The Weissach package, which is available at extra cost, involves considerably more. The front lid, roof, parts of the rear wing and the upper shell of the exterior mirrors feature a carbon-weave finish. The front and rear anti-roll bars, the rear coupling rods and the shear panel on the rear axle are made of CFRP and contribute to a further enhancement of the driving dynamics. The rollover bar, constructed for the first time from CFRP, saves around six kilograms compared with the steel version. Another highlight of the Weissach package is the PDK shift paddles with motorsport-derived magnet technology. This makes gear changes even more dynamic thanks to a more precise pressure point and a clearly perceptible click. Optionally available with the Weissach package are magnesium forged wheels, which save another eight kilograms. The new 911 GT3 RS is available for order now and starts at €229,517 in Germany (incl. 19% VAT).

    (19 August 2022)

The 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS made its first in-person appearance today at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, only two days after its digital world premiere. The show car – customized by the GT Model Line and Style Porsche – is a tribute to the 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7.

Additionally, as announced by Kjell Gruner, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America Inc. (PCNA), the car will serve as inspiration for a limited-availability Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur offering exclusive to U.S. customers:  a Tribute to Carrera RS Package.

“America is the second home of the 911 and a special tribute exclusive to the U.S. is the perfect way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7,” said Gruner. “So many of us idolized the original 1972 car. We want to create a special experience that combines exclusive options on the new GT3 RS with a one-of-a-kind list of accompanying items. Together, it will be an exciting and individual tribute to the RS lineage. This is a live project in its early stages, and is being created by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts as a joint effort between our colleagues in Zuffenhausen, Flacht and our team in America. The ideas and concepts are really exciting and we’re having a lot of fun developing it – all of us are looking forward to sharing more details with you soon.”

Appropriately for Monterey Car Week, the model on display is extensively personalized. Finished in white with key areas in Python Green, the car is a direct reference to the iconic white and green color configuration offered in 1972 on the first 911 “RS” model as well as a new interpretation of it. In this instance, the body is finished in non-metallic white including side air intakes painted to match with model designation graphics on the sides and rear in Python Green, forged aluminum wheels in Python Green with white pinstripes. Exclusive Design taillights emphasize the green-on-white theme by eliminating the red color from the rear taillights and third brake light. Finally, the side plates on the left and right ends of the large rear wing are painted white with RS logos in Python Green.

“Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur allows customers to personalize their car to a point where the vehicle is as much a reflection of them as it is of Porsche,” said Karl-Heinz Volz, Director of Exclusive Manufaktur Options. “Personalization is a Porsche tradition dating back to our first production model, the 356, when a customer requested a wiper be added to the rear window of their car. Today it is an incredibly extensive personalization program, offering options ranging from small changes to true one-off creations.”

The headlights also feature a pinstripe ring in white, something that is not available via the normal list of factory-available options. The color combination continues inside the car with matching stitching, trim panels in white to match the exterior.

“As a car enthusiast growing up, my walls were plastered with models that I was particularly fond of. One of the most influential was the 911 Carrera RS 2.7. As a young kid it captured me imagination and even today it puts a smile on my face,” Andreas Preuninger, Director GT Model Lines, said. “That’s where the styling inspiration of the 996 GT3 RS came from, which was one of my first projects at Porsche. At the time, that car felt totally extreme so colors nodding to the forefather made sense. Today, it’s a very emotional moment for me to pay tribute to the first 911 RS model with our most extreme and capable 911 GT3 RS yet.”

    About the 2023 911 GT3 RS

The 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS is the most extreme street-legal 911 model yet. Its 4.0-liter naturally aspirated boxer six-cylinder engine generates 518 hp, and revs to 9,000 rpm (911 GT3 RS: Fuel consumption* combined (WLTP) 13.4 l/100 km, CO₂ emissions* combined (WLTP) 305 g/km, Fuel consumption* combined (NEDC) 12.7 l/100 km, CO₂ emissions* combined (NEDC) 289 g/km). That power is routed exclusively to the rear wheels via a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission. Making extensive use of motorsport-derived aerodynamics, it generates more than 900lbs of downforce at 124 mph and 1,895lbs of downforce at 177 mph.

This is also the first example of a 911 GT3 RS with active aerodynamics, a feature that is used to offer incredible levels of downforce, provide deceleration assistance by creating an air brake, and by offering a Drag Reduction System (DRS) that can reposition aerodynamic elements to cut drag at the driver’s command in certain conditions.

    About the 1972 / 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7

Fifty years ago, the world knew the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 as Germany’s fastest sports car. It began as a homologation special and featured many technological innovations. It was the most powerful version of the first-generation 911, generating 210 PS at 6,300 rpm and 188 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,100 rpm from its air-cooled flat-six developed by Hans Mezger and Valentin Schäffer.

A more potent engine was only part of the success story. Much like the new 911 GT3 RS, wind tunnel testing and aerodynamic science introduced never-before-seen technology to the 911. The ducktail, now as much an icon of style as an element of function, was critical in achieving stability at high speeds. Not only did it unlock the ability to drive faster, but it did so without incurring additional drag. In fact, it reduced the drag coefficient

I was not sure about this vehicle based on the numerous spy shots on the Internet; however, the production variant is stunning and very impressive with its level of technology.

It is indeed a very nice offering.

I agree, just look at it's presence on this shot

    Re: OFFICIAL: Porsche 911 (992) GT3 RS - 2022

It looks so much better with the painted side '' intakes'' and wing plates . Amazing how a little bit of paint can change a car.

But a pretty bad move from Porsche to have this car only available in limited numbers for the US market. It will piss off quite a few people.  And so many will just do the easy aftermarket corrections to look like the original.

    Re: OFFICIAL: Porsche 911 (992) GT3 RS - 2022

What I like most in the design is the "pinch" that starts from the front wheel arch and goes up to the middle of the carbon fiber door. This is for function as Andreas P. explained but it also improves style and differentiates from other versions of the 911.

Also glad the old-style door handles are used rather than the 992's.

I think that all the unpainted plastic parts look quite cheap. Remember the 80's when most plastic bumpers were not painted?

Already, a special edition for North America! There is always a  reason. This time  a tribute to the Carrera RS 2.7 of 50 years ago

Indeed these extra painted bits improve the look.

I find it interesting they show it with a roll cage in the pics when we can’t have that In the US.  Already asking my dealer if I can get this special edition, love the way it looks.  Matches the model car I have of the RS 2.7 😆

    Re: OFFICIAL: Porsche 911 (992) GT3 RS - 2022

The wing is beyond RICERlaugh  Just embarrassing they can't design a car with unified coherent looks including the aero.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact, that the doors are now made from carbon fibre? Smiley

In the flesh, the wing melts away. The proportions are perfect and purposeful.

    Re: OFFICIAL: Porsche 911 (992) GT3 RS - 2022

Preuninger made a interesting comment saying that the 275/335 CupR combination together with the aero - it will be faster on some corners than the cup car on slicks..... - this is quite a statement. I expect crazy lap time records to come for just 525HP....silencing all the doubters.

    Re: OFFICIAL: Porsche 911 (992) GT3 RS - 2022

Cause the 3RS will make more downforce than the Cup car in certain situations, so it will pull more Gs.

Off the top of my head, first corner I can think of would be Pouhon. Yeah sorry Spa is my absolute favourite track and I always replay it in my head. In a Cup car I had to brake to get into it in a 997 Cup car. Hamilton did it flat a few times in Quali trim with softs and super softs. Another corner that comes second would be the 2nd kink at Blanchimont, I had to tap the brakes a bit/major lift to get the turn in in a Cup car.

Cup car was aero limited in those 2 turns for sure. Radillon isn't that big a deal, After braking for Eau Rouge, I am pretty much flat out of it though Radillon in a Cup car. All other corners at Spa is mechanical grip limited. And the burst of straights in between corners there a Cup car will have the advantage being a lighter car.

13 and 14, Piff Puff, is my least favourite corners in Spa, I simply can't do the deep trail through 13 the fast guys can do, they literally trail brake the whole way through 13 to set up the entry into Puff, aka turn 14. If I try that myself I would spin out at 13. I watched plenty of footage of the Carrera Cup guys running there, I just cannot replicate how they do it.

    Re: OFFICIAL: Porsche 911 (992) GT3 RS - 2022

Spent 4 days at the Ring for the 12 hours NLS race. Had the opportunity to ride in a 992 Cup around the Nordschleife with my mate and me driving the car on the short Nürburgring GP track. I could have driven the Nordschleife too but after 6 years absence and not driven a Cup car since 2018 I didn't want the GT3 cars breathing down my neck, especially as the Nordschleife was wet.

The laps with the Cup made me thinking about the GT3 RS. As the car will surely make most time up in fast corners the question is do you really want to push it that hard in such corners without all the safety gear a Cup comes with? My mate put the Cup on 3. place on the grid among all those GT3 cars during a mixed condition qualifying. The 992 Cup has become that good, fastest lap is a 8.05 (with short GP track) vs 7.51 qualifying record. And having ridden in it in the wet, high speed corner grip is amazing, you can really feel the aero coming into play as in the tight corners mechanical grip prevails (and we run out of it at Steilkurve and spun ;-))

What I want to say, the RS will surely be a monster, also in slow corners with those very wide tires but to really make a difference one has to push in those fast corners meaning when you have an off, you have a big one.

BTW when leaving the Ring yesterday, we saw the new RS undisguised driving towards us, looks very mean, was a dark grey car without WP.

Thanks for sharing. Going around the Ring in a Cup car must be quite an event !

The advantage of owning the 992 GT3 RS over a Cup is practicality. Just get in, drive to the track, take it to go for lunch and dinner etc... With the Cup you need a trailer. Ideally you need to have it set up each time at your garage, or even have a mechanic or two come with you to change tires, set ups etc + most track day events don't allow cars that are not road registered.

But the ultimate driving is of course in the Cup.

I would guess a little slower.  175 hp and lots of torque missing makes a big difference on the Ring.

GT3 RS ran official Nordschleife laps today.  A few laps reported (rumored) with the fastest of the rumors being 6:49.3

If true, the numbers are not that impressive. Based on some of the reviews, to get the maximum performance out of the car you need a PhD in Physics. The car is complicated to drive. I thought the whole point to high performance sport cars is to make them easy to drive fast.Smiley

The issue is that it has too much drag for its power to crush a track like the Ring (that's why top speed is 15mph slower than GT3, despite 15hp extra power and DRS mode).  It will shine more at medium speed tracks like we have in the US.  It's not complicated to drive (although there is great degree of customization available and there are many things going on in background like active aero).

992 GT2 RS will be needed to unseat turbocharged cars like AMG GT Black series and 991 GT2 RS MR.

And let's not forget that it's 10 seconds faster than 992 GT3 (and 11 seconds faster than 991.2 GT3 RS and 20 seconds faster than GT4 RS), which is already a very fast car at the Ring.  All 4 cars have fairly similar power and engines.

My favorite part, in Henry's video, where Henry rode along, with Jörg driving.  Henry is almost speechless by the end, and even Jörg is impressed.  Great stuff!

Yes, Henry said far more with his stunned silence than with any words Smiley

With the stickiest street rubber available, and in one of the fastest cornering road car, with a master at the wheels, it's only entering Copse at ~180km/hr, and F1 cars casually do it above 300km/hr.
