Advice on tyres 2011 turbo S cab

At 8700 miles its time. My car came w michelin ps2 which seem fine and didnt flat on bad dirt roads. Most of the wear is acceleration, little cornering . I expect this to continue w high speed road trips up and down in speed sudddenly. I could just replace the ps2 but wanted your views on alternatives. Tyre rack offers al these choices: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?tireIndex=0&autoMake=Porsche&autoYear=2011&autoModel=911+Turbo+S+Cabriolet&autoModClar=&frontWidth=235/&frontRatio=35&frontDiameter=19&frontSortCode=57260&rearWidth=305/&rearRatio=30&rearDiameter=19&rearSortCode=58154&tab=All Thanks watt

Re: Advice on tyres 2011 turbo S cab

Personally I think only the RE050A are on par if not better than the PS2. I have gone through 4 sets of PS2 in my CarreraS and was very happy with them, but decided to change this time and fitted the Bridgestones (based on recomendations from fellow rennteam members) and was very pleased with their performance (grip, steering, handling), in fact if I had to choose again I think I would choose the RE050A over the PS2, but I still have to find out how they behave towards the end of their life and how long they last compared to the PS2 to make final desition.

Carlos, Are the re050 good in the rain? I am reading complaints about cold and wet traction Do you have any experience w michelin super sport? Thanks

Re: Advice on tyres 2011 turbo S cab

I have not tested them extensively in the rain yet as we are in summer here but I will this autumn since I do a lot of highway driving at high speeds and specifically aquaplanning resistance is essential to me and what I really look for in a tire aside from dry performance. I have driven them in the wet a bit and have had no issues, but not in cold weather until we get to winter here. Perhaps John and other members from UK can comment on that.

I have heard very good things about the PSS, also Futch has also installed them I think in his CGT it was  and he was very impressed with their performance. To me there is the question about its ability to evacuate water at high speeds with such a shallow thread pattern, and like I said above, this is essential for me for highway driving in the rain. Also the problem for me is that in my 911 I use only N-rated tires tested by Porsche and modificed and approved by them for use in our cars, and the PSS are not yet N-rated. Probably they will when the 991 is out (and come as standard equip) but only in its tire sizes, at least at for a while in the beginning.

From my experience the RE050 is better than PS2 in the rain (highway, lots of water not just wet) on a Carrera S.

I wouldn't know about the Turbo but  I presume it must be the same.

I would never put a non N-rated tyre on my car (like PSS) but that's me. Many don't care.

Rosso Corsas correspond to the Michelin Sport Cups:  great on a dry track, less suited for standing water. Less tread depth than Mich Pilot Sport 2 or Pirelli P Zero Rosso, so don't count on a life of 8700 miiles before you start looking again for new boots.

Same here . The RE050 is slightly better in the rain. On the down part , I find it a little bit less sticky and progressive on track driving.

I think I can answer that.

My Turbo came with the PS2, I swap them out last September for 050. The 050 wins hands down in the the wet, cold and even light snow.

The PS2 might have a slightly high grip in the dry, but the 050 gains more in the wet and cold. The Turbo is my 'summer' car, so I didn't get snow tires, here in Vancouver it doesn't really snow that much anyway, winter is just cold and wet mostly, the 050 grips a lot better in the cold and the wet, quieter too.

I was 'told' the PS2 last longer than the 050, my PS2 lasted 20000 km, and I am 4000 km into the 050 and the little 'stubs' are still showing on the tires, so maybe it will last the same or longer.

This is great to hear, I was hoping for this when I switched to the RE050A Smiley

I love the dry grip that the PS2 provides. Yesterday, I was driving quickly across London and back, cornering and accelerating quickly and I was just in heaven by the end of the drive.

Re: Advice on tyres 2011 turbo S cab

You might want to see my other posting. I have PS2, then P. Corsa, then PS2 briefly for comparison, then now Pilot Super Sport. To the best of my knowledge, PS2 is going to be phased out over the next few years, so if you are to stay with Michelin, the choice in the future will be the Pilot Super Sport. Rumor is that 991 will have 20 inch wheel as standard (anyone could confirm this?) and will wear N rated Pilot Super Sport. In Europe, it might be named PS3, as opposed to Pilot Super Sport here in the US.

If you are to believe Michelin's claims, the PSS is faster on track and have better wear. It uses new technology (techno speaks: carbon-black compound and Twaron aramid fiber, etc., etc.) borrowed from endurance racing. The only negatives that I notice, is that even though they say it's light, it's actually not - a bit heavier than PS2. Cost wise - an incredible 40% cheaper! I don't know how they do it. With respect to N rating: even though the 19 PSS is not N rated, Michelin is using Porsche (and Audi) to demo the tires, so the non N rating may not mean anything in this case.

You also mentioned P Corsa; didn't you have a GT3 in the past? If GT3's handling and traction in canyon roads is what you are trying to emulate, than IMHO the only choice is R comp tires: P. Corsa or Michelin Cup. Anyway, R comp is another ball game altogether and completely different from street tires in many aspects. I am sure you already know their weaknesses (noise, stiffness, wet roads) and stregths (traction, stiffness, and wear).

Super Sport will be 40% cheaper because the PS2 were 40% more expensive than the competition in the first place :)

Re: Advice on tyres 2011 turbo S cab

By just looking at the PSS tread pattern, I doubt it would dissipate standing water effectively. Better than Cup perhaps but enough to make it safe from all weather transport

Re: Advice on tyres 2011 turbo S cab

^^^Reginos, yPS2.gifou are a sharp-eyed veteran with very good observation. I don't have the PS2 and PSS back to back to measure directly, so this is a guess based on looking: Indeed the thread pattern on my PSS is the most aggressive I've seen for a street tire. The grooves are rare, *and* shallow. There seems to be a high percentage of serious looking flat rubber.

    Cann,

to be honest I cannot see such a big difference in tread pattern between these two tires. Both seem to have a similiar pattern as well as tread depth.

i think you have a point Ferdie but i saved $700 on the SS vs PS2, so i'm diggin it
