It was minimum cost for Porsche to do such a parts bin special.
A Dakar has many many more bespoke parts and development.
A 992 GT3RS has many many more bespoke parts and even more development.
The 991 911R had a purpose fro existence, it was the beta car for development on the GT3 Touring, especially the new 6-speed gearbox.
As I understand, the single mass flywheel came straight from the 911R parts bin, the carbon roof is a regular production item, the carbon doors, the carbon read deck and the roll bar were of minimum cost to Porsche to make. The engine was already done for the GT3RS. About the only 'expensive' item was the carbon hood. And it carries the standard 992 interior with nothing bespoke. Very unlike even the Exclusive which has a completely bespoke Exclusive interior treatment that never went on any other car. Not to mention the copper infused carbon weave trims or the bespoke power kit. Magnesium wheels, cool, but Porsche already have the lighter carbon wheels, why not use those? Cause the carbon wheels are more expensive.
I am a Porsche fanatic and faithful, yet I failed to see the point of the ST other than a parts bin special money grab. And I will defend just about any Porsche model for their existence, even the CGT.
Rough napkin math says Porsche will make at least 150 mil profit on the ST, if not 200 mil.
I do reward Porsche with my money when they make truly nice cars, the ST isn't one of those.
