    Stainless Steel exhaust tips

Anyone out there change there 997 S stock exhaust tips for the Porsche aluminum tips or any other aftermarket tips?

I'm not interested in spending thousands on changing the whole exhaust. I think the car has a great exhaust note already, but the steel tips it has on it now are yellow and discolored.

    Pictures would help. thanks.

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

Get some SS metal polish at a boating supplies store. They'll clean up really easily. Stock tips ARE SS.

I'd seriously consider painting the (fake) quads flat black. IMO, the car looks better with less "junk" back there.

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

Really? I think the quad tip are pretty hott. I especially like the polished ones though. i'm surprised that more people havent got custom tips though.

i guess theres less reason to mod out porsche. i used to have an M3 and modding was the way. still, i dont like the stock tips.

I can't stand them because they're fake. I still have mine on my S but when I look at them I get slightly disgusted. Makes me p*ssed I didn't order PSE; at least they'd be "functional." Actually it's trading fake tips for fake sound.

My 04M3 has fake sh*t quads too (I hate them) but at least they're welded into the muffler.

GM also puts fake "Y" quad tips on their Pontiacs to make them "hott."

    AHHWAAAGH!

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

MMD, I'd hardly call PSE fake sound. You'd have to pony up for it and have a listen on a daily basis - then you'd understand.
I've had it for approx a week - and I can't imagine why it isn't standard. I'm finally proud of my car...

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

whats so great about PSE. it makes your car sound louder with a touch of a button, ok... and? doed it increase horsepower, what the hell does it DO?

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

oh god, i just listened to the PSE and I must say, it sounds beautiful but is it too damn loud? are you obnoxious when youre driving down the street?

heres a link to a video of stock vs. PSE

eiffel, the PSE is not overly loud and certainly not loud enough to have poeple throwing their boots at you. It's more throaty at low revs and noticeably louder above 4k revs. You'll love it... I do and think it's a must have.

Doesn't do anything. That's why I don't like it. Stupid thing should at least do something like increase low end torque or increase high-end power (like different headers would do??!!).

Also kinda bothers me that my stock exhaust S has a constant engineered-to-be-there drone at 60-80 mph on teh highway.

Sorry guys, I don't mean to be an a**. My point is I don't want Porsche to do frivolous stuff to the car that makes it more attractive to more buyers.

    Ya know?

Pretty soon there'll be a sound track to choose from, F1, Ferrari, V12, turbine-powered car; all you gotta do is hit a button and it comes from the stereo system coordinated with actual RPM of the engine.

They're getting gimmicky, that's what I "hate" about the new cars.

Sorry for rant; bad mood... .

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

well i must say the exhaust note is important to me. i mean what if the car was electric and had no sound what so ever? I think it detracts from the experience.

I love the sound of my stock exhaust when its cold. kinda raspy and gurgly, is that what the PSE sounds like?

Also, where should I buy it? who should install it? whats the best price I can get on it?

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

I take back what I said. Get what you want and enjoy the car!

I personally WOULD like a _QUIETER_ exhaust, because when I get on the car I feel like I'm attracting too much attention in a quiet rural setting. It's kinda hard to get loud and frisky when you imagine people from miles around cocking their shotguns waiting for you as you get closer.

I know... but the thing is that car manufacturers have been using exhaust's to control the sounds a car makes from year dot.

Not a bad idea actually Choice... that's what it's all about.

Always nice to have a bit of a rant every now and then... get a PSE installed, it'll make you fell better

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

Driving a P is all about the experience - the vision around you, the feel of the thick steering wheel and feedback, the feeling of the handling/acceleration, and of course, the sound. PSE bypasses some of the muffler, so the sound is pure Porsche, and not some "sound track." It gives me goose bumps.

If you don't own it and hear it in real life, you won't understand. I and my car deserved this little gift on our 2 year anniversary together.

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

The rep at the factory said the intent with PSE was to bring back the air cooled Porsche sound. It's not for everyone, but I think it's GRRRREAT! Better than music for me most of the time.

Don't get me wrong, I swoon over (is that the right word?) the sound of a well-adjusted aircooled 911.

A CGT revving is better than sex.

Aviation turbines could kill me with a joy attack.

Problem is I feel it's a bit contrived to engineer the sound of an engine in a way that appeals to the atavism of our boyish "vroom vroom" imitations in the sand box. Geez..., maybe the "ratt tat tat tat tat" of playing Army with a machine gun is something to exploit too?

Freaks me out that when I "aggressively and wrecklessly" (witnesses' words in the police report) pass another car that the engine was designed to sound like a ringside seat at a race track to the driver I pass.

Pretty stupid assumption on Porsche's part that I (we?) want to intimidate, or don't mind if we intimidate other drivers.

You know the car sounds about 40mph(?) faster than it actually is going, right? I wonder if Porsche knows of and approves of the exact number of exaggerated MPH?

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

Just the chrome tips alone are a great improvement over those chessy stainless tips.

I did hear that PSE does add a few ponies -maybe 5-6, but Porsche didn't want to spend the bucks for the additional certification. PSE is pricey but it sure sounds nice, like these cars should sound. Plus it looks so much better back there.

Why get your urinary tract in an uproar--you can retrofit PSE and there's nothing fake about the sound

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

if you can retrofit the PSE then how do they do all the wiring for the "button" that turns it on/off? sounds expensive.

and with the PSE turned off, does it sound just like the stock exhaust?

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

I drove my stock 997S for about 8000 miles and got real used to it, then I installed PSE and have driven it for another 2000 miles. First the PSE sound is great and a wonderful improvement, it makes it a different car. Second the car IS faster and has more torque with the PSE...period. I don't know why Porsche does not advertise the power increase but believe me it is there.

can someone please answer my question

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

I too would like to understand the costs of retrofitting PSE. I have a 997C4 and am interested in retrofitting the PSE.

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

i think i'm with MMD, i do like the standard dual pipe exhausts better. the quads are just.. too fake and flashy for my taste. i wish they put that back in the 08 facelift. ><

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

PSE parts cost approx 1700, and my stealership wanted 2900 out the door installed. I negotiated down to 2400. It is wired to operate with the sport button. However, they were kind enough to unplug the vacuum tubing - so it is on all the time.
If I drive late at night, I can keep the RPM down and avoid too much beautiful noise.

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

which bay area dealership did you buy it from? that sounds like a good deal for $2400

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

If you have a "sport" button it is connected to that just like if the factory installed PSE.
If you don't have sport a dedicated switch is an easy install to turn the PSE off or on.
Or you can leave it on all the time and not install a switch.
With the PSE off the car acts and sounds like a Porsche without PSE.
The second option might be the best because when connected to sport the PSE turns it self off when the car is doing approx 27 to 45 miles per hour. I have heard that this is a factory setting that is to control noise in residential neighborhoods in Germany.
So the best option is to install PSE with it's own switch and have more control over your car. If you think about it when you compare the PSE to an after market exhaust there is no way to change the after market one back to "stock" without changing mufflers.

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

just get an aftermarket exhaust from techart or fabspeed.

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

I have owned several Porsches with aftermarket exhausts, when I sold them the first question any potential buyer asked is do you have the stock factory exhaust system? Stick with Porsche factory parts.

The amount of wiring required depends on how the car is equipped.
If you have Sport Chrono, the" Sport" switch which is already there will also activate the PSE.
If you do not have it, the switch panel is replaced with a new panel which has the additional PSE switch (dual exh.symbol )

With the PSE off, it sounds just like the regular exhaust .
The regular and the PSE mufflers are basically the same ,except the PSE muffler gets an additional exhaust pipe with a valve in it (it's connected to the blanked off connection in the picture)
The mufflers have three chambers in them. Normally the exhaust goes thru all three. With PSE active, it bypasses
~ 2/3 of the muffler and exits already from the second chamber.

    AHHWAAAGH!

Actually, the dual tips serve several vital functions.
Since the tips really are only pipe covers, and are open at the front, they allow outside air flow to mix with the exhaust to keep it cooler .
This helps to prevent discoloring and melting the plastic bumper cover.
And , since the exhaust going into the tips also create a "venturi" effect, it drastically reduces the engine backpressure , resulting in a minimum gain of at least 30-40 hp at the rear wheels, smoother throttle response and lots of extra torque.
Did you think the 997 S gets all that extra power from just the measly 0.2 liter engine size increase ?

(hey , I figure it's at least as believable as all the Bull we get from the aftermarket muffler welders)

I hope you feel better now about your tips. Lol

    Re: Stainless Steel exhaust tips

I don't know why engineering the sound to be one way is any more or less fake than engineering it to be another way. After all, the sound which arrives after passing through the mufflers and cats is always different than it was when it left the engine, and is always different than it would be with straight pipes designed for minimal restriction and just routing the exhaust out from under the body. So why is it less authentic to have it designed to sound pleasing to a buyer? And since there are many possible pleasing sound objectives (most quiet, loudest, sounds like air cooled, sounds like a 911SC), why not offer a series of options for the buyer to choose from?

It doesn't seem any different than offering different paint colors.
