Quick question regarding brakes on PDK car

Whenever I start my PDK 997 4S in the morning my brakes are a little 'seized'. I need to give it some gas before the brakes are disengaged, the creep mode alone won't let the car move. The brakes than give a short 'CLANK' noise when I press the accelerator and start moving.

The car sleeps outside but the temps aren't extreme around here. (5° celcius at night)

Is this normal? Is the parking brake a stand alone system or does it work with the brake calipers?Smiley

Anyway, I've got the car only a couple of months now. Still adapting. Will write a comparison with my former Morgan Aero 8 soon, in case someone here is interested.  Two complete different animals. Smiley

    Cheers!

Do you park up on a hill or slope? Sounds like the hill start assist which holds the brakes on for a couple of seconds to stop the car rolling back.

    No, flat street here...yes

It's only a small annoyance, just wondering if it's occuring with all PDK cars. Guess not?

    Will ask dealer about it.

Re: Quick question regarding brakes on PDK car

No such problem with my car. It creeps in D or R as soon as I start..

BTW the PC did a software update on the engine management  a few weeks ago and the car became a lot smoother throughout the rev range. The engine is very silky.

I never apply the handbrake whilst garaged overnight on a level surface - leaving it in 'park' is sufficient.

It's an old habit, will try to park without the handbrake next time, see what happens. Smiley

I thought that putting an Auto box in P without engaging the handbrake is not a good habit because it could stress the "Parking" mechanism inside the gearbox. Most owners manuals say engage handbrake before P

I know this behavior from my car too. Especially when it is wet. Last week I parked the car after driving in the rain (in my warm and dry garage) and after three or four days without moving the car I had to push the accelerator hard before I heard the well known "clank".

Sometimes after this experience the break do not work very good for the first kilometer. After two or three traffic lights everything is ok.

(I don't use the handbrake in my garage)

This is due to a build-up of surface rust on the brake discs due to the brakes not having been used for some days. This happens to manual as well as to PDK cars.
Using the handbrake has no influence on it either way, as the parking brake is a pair of separate drum brakes with their own brake shoes.

That is also my understanding of most auto boxes, but I do now wonder exactly how the PDK enages the Park setting.

Re: Quick question regarding brakes on PDK car

Definitely surface rust on the brakes.  All 3 of my last Porsches have done this, especially when its wet and the car has been sat for a few days.  Best to clear away this rust with some spirited braking

Re: Quick question regarding brakes on PDK car

    Hey Guys,

Happens to my 99.2 TT all the time after a car wash or some rain, when the car is parked.  But after 2 mins of normal driving the problem resolves itself, its pretty normal.

Re: Quick question regarding brakes on PDK car

Thanks guys, rusty brakes are indeed pretty obvious. Lots of rain around here. I'll keep 'clanking' my starts without worries now.

    cheers! wink

Re: Quick question regarding brakes on PDK car

My PCCB do not do this!  :-)

I would think that Gladstone is correct. The PDK is not a torque converted based transmission,  it is like a manual in that it using a clutch to hold the gear (one of the clutches).  I wonder if the other clutch is also holding the next gear at that point - on a shaft that is not connected?
