How does it compare to the elise? and more important, how reliable is it?
YES! (= Young Engineers' Sporstcar) is a very small car manufacturer established 6 years ago by two car enthusiasts in Saxony who realized their dream to build their own sportscar. Their design philosophy is focussed on lightweight.
Since 2001 they sold 150 cars of the MK I version of the roadster. As they survived as a very small manufacturer (70 employees only) and have been able to launch the MK II version, I'd say the car's quality / reliability can't be too bad - of course that's my speculation only. I never talked to a YES owner nor did I read a test review in a carmag.
I have to say I really like the design and the lightweight philosophy.
They use an Alu-frame and GFK-body to keep the weight as low as 890 kg

Engine and transmission is from Audi.
The base version has the V6 3.2 with 255 hp, 330 nm @ 2,800 rpm, 6spd manual
0-100 time is 4,9 sec., topspeed 255 km/h
Purchase price (incl. 16% German VAT) is 57,370 Euro.
Option list seems to follow the Porsche scheme...they even charge you 824 Euro for ABS and 1,679 Euro for airbags (maybe a good idea for PAG's marketing department for next generation Porsches

). The car can be ordered highly customized according to the likes of the buyer (even customized suspension set-up etc.)
Soon they will offer a 355 hp Turbo-version. I guess the straightline performance may be in supercar territory given the extreme low weight of the car.
When my next fun car will become due in a couple of years I'm sure I will try a testdrive in the YES

Of course it's a quite puristic car and it won't be as practical as a Boxster (trunk has only 40 L, gastank is 45 L), but it might be really fun to drive.
Based on the looks and solid Audi engine I would take it 1000 times over an Elise (subject to a reasonable reliability track record).
