hope that its related to VTG and is normal.....
If your tips were getting hot enough to glow bright red your car would have caught fire by now.
Your friends must have seen exhaust gases still burning inside the tailpipe for brief intervals. For instance, when you suddenly close throttle or shift gear, maybe?

Years ago a friend following me in my 1981 Turbo remarked that he would see blue flames coming from my single exhaust periodically. It's normal,--particularly if blue (in proper tune). That particular car had nothing downstream from the turbo itself (like a pesky muffler...)

Quite often if the car runs rich, for example with straight pipes, the exhaust parts can become hot enough to ignite unburnt fuel that runs out. This is because the car is running slightly rich, but it gives a nice burble and a flash of light when you lift from heavy throttle.

I remember going to a boy racer cruise back in 1999 / 2000 when i had my 2nd car, it was in middlewich, cheshire and they all congregated on this large sloping car park, and they would beltdown the car park and do the handbrake turns etc, well i remember an ford escort eclipse identical to my own thrashing around, there was also a bmw and the downpipe was visible as it was glowing bright as he was redlining it for ages, it's a wonder they didnt blow up how much hammer they were getting?

Also at the cruises the escort rs turbos use to get their tailpipes glowing just like that manifold!
The only thing with glowing tailpipes what i'd be concerned about is damage to the rear trim / bumper from the heat off the exhaust!
I've not been to a boy racer cruise since 2001 and that was in crewe, since then all the car parks had barriers on them, and the cruise scene has since vanished!
And theres not many hot hatches around like there use to be, rs turbos, golf gti, cosworths etc..
