Tyres: Michelin vs Pirelli vs Bridgestone

Interesting comparison on the Tire Rack website:

    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/CompareTir...splayResults=10

From this I think I will change my stock Bridgestones to Michelins at some point. I loved my PS2s on my old C2S Cab, and I am finding the new Bridgestones on my Turbo rather loud on the road.

Re: Tyres: Michelin vs Pirelli vs Bridgestone

BTW, Alex, have you noticed increased tendency towards tramlining with the Bridgestones? I think it's definitely a negative trait with those tyres.

Re: Tyres: Michelin vs Pirelli vs Bridgestone

What do you mean by 'tram-lining' easy?

Do you mean being pulled about in the slow lane of motorways where lorry wheels have worn trenches into the tarmac?

If so then I tend to stay away from the slow lanes just for that very reason in all my cars with wide front wheels.

Re: Tyres: Michelin vs Pirelli vs Bridgestone

It can be caused by that too but I was referring more to tramlining caused by road markings if they are not painted correctly...

Re: Tyres: Michelin vs Pirelli vs Bridgestone

I currently have PS2 tires on mine but after hearing rave reviews about the Pirelli tires being very similar to the PS2 but quieter, I think I'm going to give those tires a try next.

Re: Tyres: Michelin vs Pirelli vs Bridgestone

Alex/Atomic, what tire pressure are you using? 33 front, 39 rear (partial load setting)? Have you found tire noise to worsen quite a bit at higher pressure?

RE. Pirelli, I was at Wheel Enhancement one day when someone had un-fixable flat and couldn't find a replacement because there was some supply problem. He had to buy a used tire for replacement. I think the supply problem was nation-wide and was not the first time, but don't know if it's been resolved. Some thing to keep in mind if you are going that route.

Re: Tyres: Michelin vs Pirelli vs Bridgestone

I'm using 37/44 as specified on the door sill. 33/39 seems a bit too low I think. I'm still experimenting to see what the best tire pressure to use. What are your thoughts on that, guys.

When I had to replace my PS2 at 13k miles, I initially ordered them from TireRack.com only to be told that ALL "N" spec tires were now only available through the Porsche dealership apparently because of an exclusive agreement made between the tire manufacturers and Porsche. I'm not really sure if this is the case for those Pirelli/Bridgestone tires but it definitely does apply to those Michelin PS2 tires. I ended up paying quite a bit more for those tires through my dealership than TireRack.

Jason, the 37/44 on the door jamb is only for a fully loaded car. Accroding to the manual, partial load requires only 33/39 cold pressure.
btw, tire rack has PS2 N-rated in stock right now and I always bought mine from them.
I recently switched to bridgestone N-rated to check them out and I've been very satisfied with their better wear and noise and no tramlining whatsoever. The only down side is more weight compared to michelins and pirellis but that's not an issue for me.
    will ty pirellis next time.

Re: Tyres: Michelin vs Pirelli vs Bridgestone

Thanks for clearing that up. I was under the impression that 37/44 was the recommended setting for normal use. Now I see that's not the case. I've readjusted my tires to 33/39 as per your suggestion. As for Tirerack having these in stock. That's what I got when I ordered a set originally but then I got this email from Tirerack:

    "Mr. Tang,

Thank you for your order #XXXXXXX.

Unfortunately, the N-spec tires you ordered are restricted from our sale on the website and only available through your Porsche dealer.

The only option we have available are Pirelli Rosso Asymmetrico at $293 front and $475 rear. Another option is the Yokohama Advan Sport, but the rears will not be available until approximately November.

Please confirm this email with me and please contact me if you'd like to pursue alternatives. Also let me know if you do wish to cancel this order and go to the dealer and purchase.

    Thank you,
    XXXXX

That is very weird, I just spoke to Kyle at tirerack and he confirmed that the rear PS2s are on back order but he does have the fronts and they still sell N-rated tires online including michelins and others. He was surprised you got that e-mail from them.
My original PS2 rears lasted less than 10000 miles without track time (down to visible wires) and I will never buy them again especially with the much higher cost compared to bridgestone, which by the way are holding very well in comparison not to mention they look better because they are actually a little wider than PS2s.

Re: Tyres: Michelin vs Pirelli vs Bridgestone

Maybe they've since then changed that policy. I'll check the next time I need tires which hopefully should be a while from now. I'm happy with the PS2s other than the extra noise they give off. I plan to try the Pirelli Rosso tires next. These PS2 tires lasted me 13,000 miles which is pretty much the norm I'm told. That's with no tracking either. Mine weren't down to the cords yet and probably could have gone another couple of thousand of miles on them but I elected to change them anyways.

Re: Tyres: Michelin vs Pirelli vs Bridgestone

FWIW, I've tried both the PS2s and the Pirellis and liked the Perellis more. The PS2s seem to grip better in a straight line, while the Pirellis do better around the curves. Since I rarely punch it at the line, I'd prefer to have better cornering traction. Plus the Pirellis wear better.
