No cupholder use shows amazing 997windshield tech?

I never even deployed the cup holders on my car.

Whan I am driving the P-car ALL I'm doing is driving. I'm paying strict attention even to every aspect of "nothing" that's happening.

So, at about 60 mph, that's why I distinctly see, almost in slow motion, this grey stone, not small, more like 5/8inches or 16 mm come flying at the car (from a truck tire going the opposite way?).

It was coming right at the lower half of center of windshield.

BBBBBANG!!!!! it hits the windshield so friggin' loudly it even makes my ears ring. By far the most intense windshield impact I can remember ever getting.

Within a second I'm stunned that it did NOT crack the windshield!!!!!!! HOLY F***! It just left a small mark like if you bounced a grinder to the glass for a microsecond.

Made me start to wonder that if Porsche designs our cars for Autobahn usage do they do anything to the glass on the windshield to make it tougher. It hit soooooo hard it would seem that way.

Couldda been the "Perfect Impact" too I guess... .

Re: No cupholder use shows amazing 997windshield tech?

Doubt it's tougher than normal glass, since there was a thread a while back with everyone complaining about how many windscreens they had replaced.

Re: No cupholder use shows amazing 997windshield tech?

I'm sure the glass is standard US spec. I have had stones hit my cars over the years and like you have been amazed that it didn't crack. Keep your fingers crossed as the next stone could be the one. I hope not.

Re: No cupholder use shows amazing 997windshield tech?

I was diving to a friend's house a few days after I got my C2S when some scroat threw something off a Motorway bridge on the M18 and did this...

The item just missed the corner post and hit on the shadow line on the windscreen and it was the corner post on the inside that stopped it coming into the car. Anyway, it ricocheted off the windscreen and managed to hit the rear quarter panel glass and then onto the rubber surround. No paintwork hit at all...My wife and I were wearling sun glasses which we believe stopped glass that was shattered inside the car going in our eyes. I got a few small cuts from the glass on my face....

Police never got the tw@t either...

Re: No cupholder use shows amazing 997windshield tech?

I got a stone thrown up at my windshield by a car that I passed last August. It hit with the same sort of noise you described, MMD. It sounded like a gun going off. It hit the top left (as viewed from the driver's seat) of the windshield, and left both a crack and a chip. Replacement with an original equipment windshield cost me $1,050 plus car rental expenses (I live about 90 miles from my dealer). My dealer purchased the windshield but got a windshield repair specialist, whom they have dealt with extensively, to do the work on their premises. The job was so good that even the vehicle safety inspection sticker and my town license sticker, which have to be stuck to the windshield, didn't look as if they had been removed from the old windshield and put onto the new one. Also, my dealer insisted that the car had to sit one day after replacement so that the windshield glue would set properly. I've had no leaks as a result.

No doubt you got lucky--I had a similar incident happen to my 02 Boxster S and the stone caused about a dime sized divit in the windshield--fortunately it was almost directly in front of the rear review mirror so I didn't have to look at the damage all the way from Prescott Arizona to Dallas (this all happened on a return trip from the in-laws).

Oh MMD, you need to practice the 'Porsche' duck and cover move!! Duck, cover count to 5, just dont crash, with a little practice you will get the hang of it!!

I had a rock hit right above my windshield the other day on the roof!! not good..I ducked LoooL and covered

I do the D&C move when I screw up docking our 38foot sloop. If the maneuver is perfect I stay at the helm, if things go slightly out of control I leave the helm and go below and let everybody else figure it out! NO KIDDING!! (doesn't happen very often though).

I do see from you guys' experience that there's no "lexan/polycarbonate-ish" technology utilized in our windshields which I would expect are safety "rated" for routine 180mph travel. IS THAT also excluded from "Excellence is Expected" and "There is no Substitute" program?

I can see I just was very lucky that the stone hit just right. Actually I haven't seen the car in a few days so next time I look there MAY be a nice long set of cracks that have developed because of stresses from temp changes... .

Re: No cupholder use shows amazing 997windshield tech?

Wow...I had almost the exact same thing happen to me last week. I'm driving along the interstate at around 85-90mph and a see a small object jump up in the air from the rear tires of an 18-wheeler about 200 feet in front of me and in the other lane...then time slows down as I squint my eyes and stare at the object as it slowly spins in space and begins a trajectory to hit me in the face. I promptly swerve slightly (hoping it doesn't dent my hood) and duck my head when I hear the loudest CRACK!! I've ever heard. I look up expecting to see a huge hole in the windshield only to find 2 very small pencil head sized divots in the lower center of my windshield. Lucky it didn't ruin the hood, but I'm wondering how the windshield will hold up.

I hate trucks on the highways.

Re: No cupholder use shows amazing 997windshield tech?

See the duck and cover works, plus your scared for at least 10 to 15 seconds, then impact

MMD your docking a boat now...I mean ducking a boat LOOOL
