Re: Supercharged CSL on the Ring

Is this a thing where you are protective of your turf (1728 posts), and your word weights more because of it?

Re: Supercharged CSL on the Ring

No, it's a thing where he's using a thing called common sense.

It took Gemballa at least 700hp and EXTENSIVE modifications to an already very fast car to do 7.30. Silly them, they could've just put a supercharger in a csl, and call the day.

Re: Supercharged CSL on the Ring

I've bean scooting around quite a few forums over the years, and recognise the type, "local hero".
You don't seam to be interested in how we did it, instead, you have made up your mind that we make it up as we go.
    Now, why is that?

Re: Supercharged CSL on the Ring

It's not just a supercharger, and Gemballa did it on Yokohama AVS Sport tyres wich are not by far as good as the Michelin Cups. I know as we drive the Yokohama AVS on the street.
And by all means 480 hp or 700 hp do you think that horsepower is the key to be quick around the Ring?????? To have the advantage of 700hp you need serious aerodynamic aid (downforce)

There realy is no exotic changes done to the car, it's just that we have concentrated on improving EVERY aspect of the car. Even so, we did not use any specialy crafted exotic components, only of the shelf avaliable parts.(besides the Supercharger install)

Thats it!? And that shaved 20 seconds on the ring from an already CSL version of the E46-M3?? to almost match the production world car record of nurburgring done by Walter Rohrl on a Carrera GT supercar? give me a break, nice propaganda but who are you trying to kid, seriously... few suck their thumbs around here, maybe in supercars.net

well, goodnight and i hope to see you all in the real world, where you find some unexpected things...

I don't know what you meant by turf, I have no turf here at all, and my opinion is no better than yours here Velle, arguments and facts are what matters here and no flaming or such, just a constructive discussion.
Like brunner says, I'm just following simple comon sense, thats all anyone has to do to arrive at the same conclusion I have. The real weight is in the reasoning or argumentation and so far I haven't seen any from you to think otherwise, on the contrary. But hey, if Von Saurma publishes in Sport Auto that he did a 7:30 or better in the CSL them I will change my mind. So lets wait till spring and see...

I hate it to rain on your parade but I hear that almost every day from various sports car drivers, including my wife's "business competitor" who owns and drives a CSL.
He was making a lot of fun of my 997 Carrera S until we met on the street. The only things he found to say were "this guy is insane..." after I left him pretty frustrated several times. And of course he said it behind my back.

I drove at around 90% of the potential of my car, maybe even slightly less because I always have my kids on my mind.
And every day I have to deal with those incredibly provoking and blind BMW, Honda, etc. drivers who try to race me, especially in the city!!!
I usually do one or two extremely fast turns at intersections, they usually get the message and keep it slow. Or I just listen to some music if somebody really isn't pressing hard and I let him go.

I owned a BMW E36 myself and I enjoyed a lot chasing down those 993 drivers. The BMW was much easier to drive than the 993 and most 993 drivers I met on the street were not really capable of driving at the limit of the car.
But after I took delivery of a 993 (I wanted a challenge... ), I learned how to tame this beast. It was so much fun. The BMW M3 CSL is a great car and a very very nice product from BMW. But don't expect wonders from it.

Personally, I always care about stock car performance. Because it usually shows pretty well how good the basis is.
The CSL is a great sports car but it isn't really what I would call a competitor for the 911. When I owned a M3, I was "ignorant" too and thought that all 911 owners are dumb to spend so much money for the same performance. I learned my lesson.

Actually, yes. The Nürburgring is known for being a horsepower track. Once you know it well, there are a number of sections which can be strung together into quite long straight sections. To be quick one needs to run less downforce and allow the car to slide around more in the corners as a consequence. It isn't the comfortable way around the track but it is the quickest.

...By the way, I personaly think that the Carrera GT can go even faster, as Walther R. himself has said with a younger wersion of me behind the wheel. The Carrrera GT is faster around the Ring with the traction controll, suggesting its not using all of the advantage it has on the papper (612 hp)
I remember reading that Walther R. said that going under 7:30 was not fun, but attendable non the less....

Interesting thought - and I could actually imagine that. Just to get the record straight, if I remember correctly there is no official N'ring record by Röhrl himself but by von Saurma in a 2nd attempt in the CGT.
The Gemballa-Porsche was driven by Kaufmann when achieving 7:32 compared to 7:4? with v. Saurma behind the wheels at the first time.
I cannot comment on his capabilities but I could also imagine that a slightly better laptime could be possible on the CGT - maybe we should ask U. Alzen??

Good luck with the CSL and when do you perform the official and timed lap?

Re: Supercharged CSL on the Ring

    By the way,

Lucas Luhr needed 7:41 min on the Nordschleife with a 996 GT3 modified by Manthey Racing.

    Specs:

    413 hp
    1320 kg
    Dunlop Sport tyres

Yeah, the M410, that is one serious machine, and on Dunlop Sports

The racecar version of Manthey did a 7:01 BTW

To end this discussion and yes, Carlos is right, look at this picture. Amen.
