    Tiptronic Operations

Seeking advise if tiptronic upshifts automatically to the next gear at full rev under the following different activated settings:
    1) Manual/Normal mode
    2) Manual/Sport mode
    3) PSM off in Normal mode
    4) PSM off in Sport mode

    Re: Tiptronic Operations

PSM switched off and/or Sport mode switched on:

If the PSM is switched off and/or Sport mode is
switched on, an automatic upshift does not occur
when the engine speed limit is reached.

    Cancelling upshift suppression
This restriction can be cancelled for one gear
change by depressing the accelerator to kickdown.
If, for example, the engine speed limit is
reached during overtaking and the automatic upshift
does not occur, the transmission in this case
shifts up by accelerating to kickdown.
    - Depress the accelerator pedal beyond the fullthrottle
    point (kickdown).

Above extracted from Owner's manual, but I still do not quite understand what is meant by "cancelling upshift suppression". Someone please explain?

I assume they want to tell you that in sport mode or without PSM, the Tip does not change automatically to the next gear. That means it will let you accelerate to the redline of the rev limiter and stay there.

However, if you are still in kickdown, it will do the change to the next gear at the rev limit. (cancel the supression = it will do it?).

In that way you can do a kickdown to accelerate (e.g. from standstill), and it will shift up to the next gear even as it is in sport mode in which it would not shift unless you tell him so.

I do not really know, but that is my assumption. Maybe someone else knows better. I am too lazy to search for the german version of the manual somewhere and check whether they wrote it clearer there.

    Re: Tiptronic Operations

Does kickdown means that one has to acheive it from a standstill? Or if one could do it from any gear but the throttle pedal has to be depressed right to the floor?
Very puzzled as the literature is not that straighforward.

    Re: Tiptronic Operations

kickdown has nothing to do with stand still. It is just pressing the throttle fully. There is one point behind full throttle that is interpreted by the car as kickdown.

The whole idea of the non-shifting in sport on or psm off seems to be that you can drive at the redline and the rev limiter without worrying that the car might just shift up.

However, in some situtations, for instance you accelerate from standstill, you might not want to be stopped by the revlimiter and have to upshift manually, therefore, you could just kickdown and he will at least get into 2nd gear.
Similarily, as they wrote in the manual, you might run at a higher speed and higher revs and suddenly need to accelerate, e.g. pass someone, then you might also not want to worry about the rev limiter kicking in. Again, a kickdown will bring you forward at least to the next gear if necessary. As they tried to explain by saying that the upshifting is for one gear shift not surpressed if you kickdown.

    Re: Tiptronic Operations

Thanks for the kind explanation, so if I understood correctly, the tranny should allow you only one shift automatically upon kickdown when in Manual-Sport mode or PSM-off mode?

Yes, all the stuff just makes sense in the manual mode of the tip; and if either one of the conditions hold: Sport mode is on or PSM is off.

Again, that is just what I read from the manual text that you provided and what makes sense to me.
